For me it was not buying the stack of 10 7740 Intercity Train Sets back in 1985 in Germany. But I wasn't going to spend that much money. @Istokg: They had already been retired at that point, though, correct? Do you remember the asking price?

I was doing some research on old LEGO catalogs and sets from the 1970s and 1980s, and sometimes the Copyright year and release year didn't always match up. So I wouldn't be surprised if this Idea Book wasn't actually released earlier outside of the USA. Just look at the release dates for the first castle sets... 375/6075…

Mine would probably be between the 9354 Dacta Hospital (with bin and instruction cards), 1489 Mobile crane (with instruction book)1490 Bank (with stickers and ins or the 1966 repair garage(with original instruction book). Plus the train 7727,7730, 7740... Again I guess 'rarest' is a matter of perspective

I used to own this set #7740 It was close to impossible to keep it running due to cleaning of the current leading rails, I had to clean them over and over again. It was a nice train though, but I'd much rather it had a built-in battery compartment so I didn't have to clean after 2 hours to keep it running.

At least a few were, but since I was in my dark ages I don't have direct experience. Some of the younger guys in my LUG had 12V as kids though. 7740 was available here. Some 4.5V blue track train sets were too, I remember the red battery carriage with the blue roof.

I was lucky enough to receive #6990 space monorail as my parents won some money in a newspaper competition, but I still wanted a lot of the other larger Futuron and Blacktron sets such as #6392 and the Blacktron base #6987 Also anything train related - I has #7730 and later got #7745, but so much pocket money went on track…

Unfortunately I've had several instances of opening a sealed set where the pieces aren't as they left the factory. Examples, a sealed race set that the box was damaged so I opened it and found that the tires were fused to the plastic parts they were touching and left permanent wheel marks on the plastic, also an as new…

Here is the 7740 Intercity Train set, one of the most popular of all 12V LEGO Trains. This 12V set (introduced in 1980), like most 12V sets, came in several language boxes. There was the Danish-Swedish-Finnish, the English-French-Italian, and here we have the German-French-Dutch.... Well these triple language boxes answer…

Top 5 12v train sets (influenced by a heavy dose of nostalgia) 1. #7740 InterCity - Original and best, the flagship of the initial wave was a massive leap forward in design, with loco and coaches in distinctive red and yellow livery 2. #7760 Shunter - classy and endearing little standalone model, not really done since 3.…
