There is zero reason to discontinue a large flagship set with universal appeal to child and adult collectors like the Death Star. I honestly will not be surprised if it's still available in 2015 and beyond. While rare, it's not unheard of. Train set #4565 was introduced in 1996 and lasted until 2003-04 or so.

The trains that did it for me was back getting out of my dark ages, #4561 and #4565 then it kinda snowballed from there #3225 #2126 #4553 #4533 #4541 #4556 #4557.. Then I kinda blacked out, and when I came too I had all of the 9v stuff and most of the 4.5 and 12v that had minifigures and up to the current RF/RC trains
