I was toying with the idea of getting a couple extra extension cables (#8886) since they are only $2.99 and seeing if I can rig up a speed control.

Apologies for the delayed response, and thanks for the explanation. I've ordered an 8886 cable, and I have a couple of spare USB cables. Once it's arrived I'll have a go at following the above instructions and will report back once done.

One of the reviews of the product linked below seems to suggest it can used to link the old train motors with the PF battery pack, though I'm a 12v man so can't test it out myself... http://shop.lego.com/en-GB/LEGO-Power-Functions-Extension-Wire-8886
