I dont own #8881, but I cannot imagine, functionality-wise, why it would not. Judging by the box, #88000 connects to the helicarrier. If you can find a way to secure #8881 with the switch in the open space, then it should be able to turn on... and not fall out.

@Morkman #8881 Battery box does not have anti-studs on the bottom, only the beams with pin/axle holes on the sides.

Is there any notable difference between the #8881 power box and #88000 power box aside from price? I'm about the pull the trigger on buying and figured I'd ask.

@Hob #8881 battery pack is still available and comes in #8293 power functions set with the M-motor so I presume that would work with other motors. Uses 'aa' batteries instead of the 'aaa' batteries.

I have gotten extra Lego when I have placed S@H orders. When they had the LEGO Employee Minifig one came in each box.(i believe there was three boxes with that order) I gotten a CFM once, a Speedorz set, and with my last order I got two 8881 battery boxes.

Whilst you can use that battery box for trains, it is, as you say, more geared towards technic models, and won't really fit in most trains very well.
