Hi all, big thanks to your quick replies, it’s much appreciated. Bandit778, those links are really helpful thank you Panchox1, thank you, I too went mad on the Christmas village and bought 4 scenes, some old retired sets. They were worth it seeing my granddaughters faces when they saw them set up as I also bought the light…

Yes, they should hook up to powered up or power functions battery boxes, though I haven’t tried any to see how it would work exactly, but should be plug & play I’d think: https://shop.lego.com/en-CA/product/Hub-88009 https://shop.lego.com/en-CA/product/LEGO-Power-Functions-AAA-Battery-Box-88000 And I think there are a…

You want #8879, #8884, #88000 and #88002. You don't need anything else. You can buy them individually, as a set or try to pick up a bargain used or new earlier train set with them included such as #60051. The instructions for the Winter Holiday Train include how to motorise with the components listed above.Have a look at…

The instructions to motorize it are in the set instructions, but I think it looks pretty poor with the wires from the tender to the engine, plus you can't fit the driver in once done. I put everything in the tender, so it pushes the locomotive. Works fine and looks much better. Happy to send some photos if you like.…

If it is creator sets like the fairground sets then he will want m motors and a battery box. He may also want an ir receiver and ir remote control. If technic then there are more motor types, but starting with m motors is probably a safe bet. However i I would recommend starting with a set that is already motorised. The RC…

There are instructions for using Power Functions in the train contained in the instructions for it. The online copy of the instructions is on the page for it here: #10254 but I've also linked it directly here. The instructions also tell you what you need. Basically, you need #8879, #8884, #88002 and #88000. You can use…

#88000 will only let you drive full speed, and turning it off again means grabbing the train off the tracks or waiting until the batteries run out... I'd go with the IR receiver/transmitter combo, or maybe get the expensive rechargeable battery pack as it has a speed control. But this (+ suitable power adapter if you don't…
