I'm nearly always surprised when a fairly pedestrian piece in what I consider to be a commodity colour has an inflated price... until I find the sets that they're in! Oh dear, I can totally see your problem here... how about using 1x1 open studs 85861?

I think I got it all, but might have missed something. Depending how they're used, you might need one of two types of jumper plates (the 1x2 plates with a single stud in the middle).
