Nice topic. Technic's not known for it's great beauty but some of the early ones were lovely - the 851 tractor and 857 motorcycle spring to mind. As for eyesores, there's been a few.... the ill proportioned, badly coloured 8865 Test Car takes that cake.

I think my very set was the Universal Basic set 3, around '75 or '76. I definitely remember getting 614 Digger and 613 Bi-Plane around the same time. My first Technic set was 850 Forklift, followed by 857 Motorbike & Sidecar the following xmas.

This is getting very space-y... awesomely so, I might add; still, here's a motorcycle and sidecar definitely not from space... It's inspired by the early #857 Technical set, with added suspension, details and blackness. It's an old build; the stuff I'm building right now is for a company who's paying me for the pleasure…

^ Pirate chess set too #40158, ony available for about a day and now listed as sold out (AU, UK & EU). http://shop.lego.com/en-AU/Chess-Set-40158?_requestid=1727853 I can see the appeal though, 857 pieces including 20 minifigures looks like a pretty good parts/army building set and at a great price. I hope they make some…

Ok set a photo of the box. It seems like I've forgotten some the details of this thread. Gary already had a photo of the 857 piece JCPenneys set. Another one won't hurt anyone. I've thought about buying a '73 Sears catalog off eBay an number of times. But the price is always too high for what I want for. I don't know about…

Oh, it did. The original press release link is dead, but BZPower had a story on how well it was doing just on its second year of release. http://bzpower.com/story.php?ID=857 BIONICLE was number 1 for Lego in 2002. And for good reason! The Bohrok sets were revolutionary at the time, and the subsequent summer sets and…

@paul_merton Thanks for the info. I just called
[email protected] and placed an order via telephone instead of the web, and the Lego CS employee added the fountain set manually to my order. B.t.w. I ordered the Pirates Chess set. (My second Lego Chess set) for €59,99 (I paid €5 less as I still had some VIP points, so €54,99 in total and…

In 1970 TLG started litigation against USA Samsonite... because LEGO sales (never more than $5 million a year) were underperforming. So 1972 ended up being the last year that USA Samsonite was allowed to sell LEGO before the license reverted back to the TLG Denmark. This 1972 J. C. Penney Catalog page on LEGO sets, shows…

My recent great find is the pinnacle (to date) of my Lego bargain hunting (I'm a collector, not a reseller). I typically search on kijiji (a Canadian classifieds site) for people selling bulk used Lego and I typically can only guess at the sets included based on unique parts in a photograph or when viewing the Lego in…
