I've got three sets that use 3639 and 3640 (#6682, #6928 and #6870) and haven't had any problems with them, sounds like you've been unlucky or took the dumper offroad too much :) -

This happened to me too. As far as I've been able to gather (from a very sketchy memory) my parents bought me and my sister one classic space set each when we were very young (#6842 and #6870). As a set collector, I try very hard to use only those part designs that are contemporary to the year of release.
