Star Wars mini Y-Wing (2003)
Back in 2003 Lego put out 4 mini Star Wars sets (4488, 4489, 4490, 4491) where each of the 4 sets had extra pieces included so that if you had the extra pieces from all 4 sets you could combine them and build a mini Y-Wing fighter. The Y-wing can be built with extra parts found in #4488, #4489, #4490, and #4491. Not sure about the others, but perhaps they can be identified through a similar vein of investigation. -

They have done this, but with mini sets. For example #4484 through #4487 contain extra parts that combine to build a TIE Bomber, and #4488 through #4491 contain extra parts that combine to build a Y-Wing. While I really like the concept, I don't know that it would work for larger sets because of the amount of extra pieces… -
