It could be because my track layout is just on the floor, instead of on a nice table. But the Passenger Train (7938) I stole the motor from was much more reliable on similar track layouts. -

Went to the TRU in Lakewood, Co. and picked up 2 7938 trains. They still have 1 left but the box is badly damaged if anyone is interested. I don't get Lego points but I saved $60 over the Lego price even with the $10 TRU premium. -

Four boxes of 7499: Flexible and Straight Tracks and a box of 7895: Switching Tracks is a good place to start.
