I recently built a few older sets from 2000-2003 timeframe, the 8001 Battle Droid, 8002 Destroyer Droid, & 4481 Hailfire Droid. The instructions for those sets were much harder to follow than the current sets, which I do agree are almost too simple. But consider for a minute the target market... My 6 year old son does well… -

When I was a child in the 50s, Lego was not sold in the US; I had Tinkertoys. My son loved Lego and we bought lots of space sets including #6990 for a special birthday, but I was not invited to play except to apply the stickers! My main Dark Age started when I was 12. My brother is 13 years younger than me though so when he started getting Lego, I "helped" with that.
