I can't say with certainty what the first set I played with was because only a few bricks have survived from that era. However, the first set I remember getting as a present was 6801 Moon Buggy.

Yeah, totally agree @piratemania7 I remember getting #6801 I think it was and thought it was an amazing set. It had multiple builds and the space man. But today it looks pitiful - I still like it though and picked it up when I came out of my dark ages.

4 digit numbers for 'regular' sets are now allocated randomly. Until the mid-1990s LEGO followed a very rigid scheme with the number indicating the theme and the size of the set [1], but back then it was easier to with relatively few different themes. [1], so 6801 was a small space set, 6899 a large one

3-ring binders, in plastic page protectors sorted by theme, in numerical order. I have 19 binders so far... Also, our local office supply stores sell plastic sleeve protectors with 3-4 small pockets rather than one large 8.5x11 pocket; these are perfect for the smaller instruction books like 6801, etc. (They are marketed…

I have three #6801 Moon Buggies. Why? Well. It was my children's birthday, thirty years ago. Three friends came with identical presents - said moon buggy. My parents said, "Wait, open only one, then we can return the other two to the store for different sets." But I wouldn't listen. Today I wish I had listened, of course,…

Anything with a minifig but especially space - only had 2 sets. I was totally obsessed by sci-fi tv shows back then (Buck Rogers, Star Trek, BSG and the wed night BBC 2 sci-fi movies). I had a load of lego and between myself and my brother we had maybe 8 or 9 minifigs. I do remember being at a summer camp and going to a…

^ None of my LEGO is hidden per se, but the boxes are all in the loft, protected by plastic bags and spiders and the LEGO itself is all neatly organised in storage containers, so she doesn't know exactly what I have. She knows that it's a lot (all things being relative), given the size and number of containers. I tend to…
