I believe LEGO has modified its dark red in recent years. But I don't believe Bricklink identifies it as a separate color like old gray vs. bluish gray. -

When discussing prices of those sets, you have to bear in mind that one is from 2008 and one is from 2015. Also #10696 is not actually a basic bricks box, it is a Creative Brick Box. #6177 is probably closest to what you're looking for. It has been out since 2008, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's discontinued soon. If you're in the US, choices are a bit slim in this category. #10664 is a nice, large assortment of mostly basic bricks but is not available in the US. -

For those like me that missed out on Wal-Mart's creative tower, Amazon has a consolation prize: #6177 is 22.99 (23% off.) That works out to be 3.5 cents per piece, but these are pure bricks. No 1x1 round plate filler. And it definitely beats the current counterpart #10662 which is currently sold out at Amazon. -

If you like basic bricks, Amazon had a good price on #6177 at $25. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039PUTZY/ It's not a significant drop, but that set is a great value and rarely (if ever) goes on sale. TRU has it for $40 if that tells you anything. -

Best value sets for bricks?
Hi, I need to source a load of bricks, two studs wide and various lengths. What's the best box to get? I've gone through a few options: 1) Lego educational set - was about £50, I can't remember the set number.
