[US] Toys R Us Promotions 7/15 - 7/21

It's bizarro world today at ToysRUs.com. Looks like most/all (I didn't check every set) LEGO sets are down to MSRP or lower. They also have some sort of 20% off your entire toy purchase going on - excluding sale items. I thought at first they marked the LEGO sets down to MSRP, so that they would be "on sale" and thus excluded from the 20% off sale. But even the non-sale items, such as Death Star, Imperial Shuttle, etc. seem to be excluded. All LEGO sets seem to be excluded, except the newly added Cosmic Cube. That set doesn't qualify for the free ninjago hidden sword polybag. So I'm guessing TRU considers any set which qualifies for this hidden sword promo to be excluded from the 20% sale.

Anyway, perhaps this will change or get fixed.

Going down to MSRP appears to be a Lego "sale" for ToyRUs.com (see the front page of the website). Hurray, I can buy CMF at retail prices!

Me thinks TRU must be run by the Mad Scientist from Monster Fighters. Or is it a math challenged troll?
  • SpiderManSpiderMan Member Posts: 47
I think they just did it so the 20% off won't apply to them but who knows?

-20% Off a purchase of $75 or more.
    -15% Off a purchase of $50-$74.99.
-10% Off a purchase of $49.99 or less.

Orders of $75+ ship free. The coupon is only valid in-store, but it also doesn't stack with other sales and promotions. Most LEGO sets are currently "discounted" down to MSRP, eligible for the free polybag, or both. Most of the new Summer 2012 sets are in-stock online at MSRP.

Good luck finding the Summer Star Wars wave, actual sets on "sale", OR the Ninjago polybag in a store.

    TRU makes my brain hurt.

^ I agree, that is all crazy, but it seems to work...

JCPenny used to do the same thing, everything was always on sale with them, they recently switched to a "low prices all the time" model and sales have dropped off.

People would rather "feel like they are getting a deal" rather than actually getting a deal.

    People are funny creatures...

^^ right, I got that coupon via email as well. Planning to stop by and see if there's a motorized excavator or something else MSRP.

But there's also a general 20% off purchases over $75 on-line - excluding sales items, and apparently excluding items which are part of another promo (like the hidden sword polybag offer).

The whole furniture industry in the UK works on this basis. If it isn't at least 40% off, then it is the "high price period" that by law they have to have before it can be advertised as discounted.

I ran into a similar issue trying to use the 20% in-store coupon with the MVR on Friday. It was eligible for either the free S7 minifig, or the free Lego case, and neither was compatible with the coupon (obviously). Fortunately, the cashier was able to remove either/both and applied the coupon. Does not work online (even when you remove the free ninjago, still no discount). However, I'm semi-happy that at least the prices are back to MSRP since I have some TRU credits to burn :).

I sure am glad I can get the ninjago hidden sword polybag instead of 20% off. How nice of them!
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
^ No doubt. Hmm... $80 off Death Star or a $5 polybag...

It sounds like there may be hope in-store for negotiating exclusions/discounts (which I've had mixed results with), but I've never had such luck when calling to place an order.

    The sale says online only
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
^ there was a coupon that was sent via email for 20% off in-store only
  • JBricks27JBricks27 Member Posts: 678
Would you mind forwarding that to me?

    Nevermind, found it at retailmenot

Dunno if that can be done, or if they are unique coupons to each recipient.

  • PoochyPoochy Member Posts: 479
^ Pretty sure the one sent in the email is one-time use and therefore unique because my cousin tried to use it twice and was denied the 2nd time :).
  • JBricks27JBricks27 Member Posts: 678
Go to retailmenot.com, search for toys r us, and print away. Just used one from there in store. They also marked down the prices to reflect the online changes on top of the 20% off. My local TRU also had some of the newer star wars sets

Im on the phone with my buddy who is a TRU district manager. They Ninjago Hidden Sword givaway is a promotion, so therefore all Lego that qualifies for this promotion is excluded from the ONLINE 20% sale.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
UPDATE: He said to try to remove the promotional item from the cart. It didn't work. Apparantly TRU is smarter than us...lol.

TRU offering a $25 discount on only purchases $125 or more made with a MasterCard today. Code MC125. Only applies to first 4,000 purchases.

Sadly, Jabba's Palace is out of stock.
  • brickupdatebrickupdate Member Posts: 1,020
At the TRU near me, prices were still above MSRP. They had some of the new Star Wars sets in stock, at $5 to $10 above MSRP. Even with the 20% coupon, I couldn't justify the purchase. With the TRU tax, regular tax, and the fact that for most sets, I just wanted one or two of the minifigs... I'll wait for better sales. Thanks for all this info though!

^ You have to tell the cashier the price is lower on the website, then (nicely) ask them to match that price. They will verify it, match it, and you can still use your coupon.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
^ Sometimes they will match. Depends on who you talk to and what mood they are in.

Thanks for the notice on the Mastercard Monday @hoyatables! I made an order just a little over the $125 minimum and got basically a 19% discount overall. Heroica Ilrion was listed at $16.49 which is less than MSRP ($19.99), so with the Mastcard discount it was $13.28. I got Mines of Moria for $64.42 and got the free Aragorn poster. And free shipping over $75.

Of course, TRU was out of stock (online) for the free Ninjago Hidden Sword polybag, so I didn't get that. "Hey, here's a free polybag with purchase! Only we're out of stock! Ha!" Toys R Us likes to play games with its customers.
  • dotknottdotknott Member Posts: 30
Strangely, my order totaled $124.48 but the $25 off was still showing as applied.
  • RennyRenny Member Posts: 1,145
Nice. I purchased the Black Pearl and essentially got the Uruk Hai Army set for free (along with a poster and free shipping). Not a bad deal.
  • JBricks27JBricks27 Member Posts: 678
Grabbed the desert skiff and some others from TRU today. Again, they price matched the online price and applied the 20% discount. There werent any hidden sword, series 6 or 7 CMFs left, but they did have a box of series 5. I'm hoping I can find palatines arrest and Jabba's palace before the sale ends

So sick of TRU and the games you have to play with them to get a halfway decent deal. I don't think I'll buy any LEGO from them until Bricktober and even then that is just for the exclusive giveaway. I know I won't be getting a deal but I also know I'll come away with something to add to my collection of LEGO goodies.
  • MarthMarth Member Posts: 15
got the last fire temple at mine for 111 including tax
  • malachirobertsonmalachirobertson Member Posts: 268
So, is it hit and miss with getting the 20% to stack with Lego? Are they going to give me trouble in the store if I try to buy CMF 7 with the coupon?
  • Farmer_JohnFarmer_John Member Posts: 2,405
Took my 20% coupon down to TRU and walked out without purchasing anything. They overcharge for everything and with 10% state sales tax, it is a much better deal just to purchase from Amazon, Bricklink, Walmart or any other source. To add insult to injury, I was considering purchasing a set to get the free Ninjago giveaway; however, TRU was out of stock on those with no rain checks. Smacks of bait and switch to me. So, my money just stayed in my pocket and greedy TRU got to keep their sets on the shelves...
  • hoyatableshoyatables Member Posts: 873
^ to be fair, plenty of people were successful in getting TRU to match their online price and then apply the coupon. Did you try that approach? Agree that the Ninjago being out of stock is a bit cheeky, but if they then apply the coupon seems like a wash to me.
  • PoochyPoochy Member Posts: 479
^^ Same. Found nothing worth getting at my TRU. The closest to MSRP I could find was #3182 Airport at $103.99 (versus $99.99 online), but the PPP ratio was still bad even with the 20% off :(.

A bit off-topic but my guess he was shopping @ TRU for the 4th & wasn't happy with their pricing either:

Toys R Us email and banner this AM says that they are offering 20% off any online toy purchase of $75 or more. "Sale items and promotional items" seem to be excluded so LEGO probably won't work because of the Ninjago offer that isn't available. Given, however, that Ninjago promo item is out of stock, I think it would be worth a call to TRU customer service to see if they'd give you the 20% off in lieu of the promo.

Just a heads up, Today when I add an item to my cart at toysrus.com it applies a coupon for 20% off orders over $125. It works on all the expensive LEGO sets. Actually it seems to work on every LEGO set. I'm sure it is a mistake because the details for the coupon read: Online Only! SAVE 20% when you spend $125 or more on eligible regular-priced baby items! Might be worth a shot though.
  • adamintxadamintx Member Posts: 21
Actually, it says, *Excludes ALL toys" in the details. Weak. It still shows up. Someone should give it a shot.
  • adamintxadamintx Member Posts: 21
Actually they are changing everything around right now. The section about Christmas in July now includes the word LEGO in the list of items. As of now it just redirects to an ad.
  • nkx1nkx1 Member Posts: 719
Bummer, looks like I missed the deals now that they've fixed the glitch. Was hoping to pick up a Unimog at 20% off. Oh well.
  • Pitfall69Pitfall69 Member Posts: 11,454
I only shop at TRU online during their BOGO sales. Very rarely do I buy anything at the brick n mortar stores unless there is a sale or promotion that works for me. I earn points on my credit card and redeem them for TRU gift cards. I get about $5-600 of "free" Lego every year.

We met the Lego rep at our TRU today. Nice Lady! Did not tell her we think TRU sales suck because we are hoping to find a way to get a display . . . Probably a pipe dream, but I can hope!

I called the store closest to me and asked if the coupon would work on LEGO and I was told yes. I called because of the "Not valid with any other offer" part in the details of the coupon. Just sharing for those that can use it.

Holy Crap! I was in TRU tonight and they had all the new SW sets(minus the skiff) and I could not believe the mark ups on them. $149.99 for both the Malevolence(sp?) and Jabba's Palace. Seriously TRU? That place will never get any of my money when it comes to Lego.

I am glad that I have a Lego store here in my city and when I talked to a Lego Rep today they told me they were getting the new stuff come next Monday.
  • USMCYodzUSMCYodz Member Posts: 94
A couple of the bigger sets were 25% off at my local TRU store. Pretty much anything $50+ that was left. Looks like trying to clear shelf space for the new toys.

Yeah.. My TRU also had those sets, but even with the 20% of coupon it was still more expensive than buying them from the LEGO store. So I bought 7848 "Toys R Us Truck" since it was on clearance, and it's the only place you can buy it. A little bit of irony in that purchase.
