Are bigger LEGO sets worth the purchase?

I just wanted this discussion to be open to sets that be people might be interested in getting but they're really expensive so they're not sure if they want it/need it.

For example, does anyone of Diagon Alley 10217 (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=10217-1) because I've recently gotten into collecting Harry Potter and I kind of want this set really bad but I'm already collecting Star Wars, LOTR, and some Super Heroes so I'm not sure if I should put money into the Diagon Alley set when I can being putting money into Jabba the Hutt's palace.

I don't really think anyone else can tell you what's "worth it". It's depends on your own preferences and funds.
I think the only external factor that could possibly hold any sway in this decision is when a set will be discontinued. In the example you give, Diagon Alley will be gone soon, Jabba's Palace has only just come out. So DA is the "smarter" purchase.
But in most instances, the case probably won't be so clear-cut.

@trickydicky0880, please note that I've closed this discussion, because at the end of the day this kind of decision is down to you, and you alone. I suggest you look at the Brickset reviews for the sets in question (ie: #10217 ) if you would like other people's opinions on a particular set. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact myself or any member of the staff.
