[US] Target Summer 2012 clearance

scotty12scotty12 Member Posts: 835
edited June 2012 in Shopping USA/Canada
I know some of you have also noticed that last week Target had put POTC QAR on clearance for $101. Not much. I stopped in at the same Target today and they had many more clearance sales starting. Millenium Falcon $119, Frigate $101, HP Hogwarts Castle $90, the smaller HP, POTC $11.99 sets were $10.25. One of the Targets had Ninjago Destinys Bounty $55 and other store had it at $67. Hopefully they'll go down more each week or 2 weeks!
Not the run out and fill up the shopping cart deals but it's a beginning of the mark-downs.

I was at my Target today and many of these sets were marked down as stated, however, it seemed as if several had been marked up over RRP before they were marked down. For instance HP Knight bus was on clearance for $36, but it showed that its regular price was$42 and change. Also, the creator cabin was priced at $36????? Its been $29.99 RRP forever. Is this a new tactic????

I'm in Los Angeles (Southbay area) and saw the same markups at my Target since around February. They must have heard from someone at TRU that they can get away with it on Lego. There was actually a thread somewhere back about this starting to happen at Target.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
I noticed that too specifically on the Knight bus. I know it was RRP before and now it shows the like $45 reg price on the sale sticker. Pretty sad that retailers try to deceive uninformed customers that way. I only buy from TRU with sales or the VIP coupon things, and from target when its the only place to get it or I have a gift card. Otherwise its [email protected], WM or amazon.

Target pricing is by store in toys, now. Go to Targets in poorer neighborhoods. In LA, the Glendale store is a rip off, but the La Cienega store is all MSRP.
  • ZonZon Member Posts: 213
QAR isn't being cleared at the local Target (yet). From memory (give or take a buck or two), everything was 10-20% off.

    Millennium Falcon (all gone already)
    Republic Frigate ($101)
    Sith Infiltrator ($49)
    Grievous ($40)
    Jedi Shuttle ($50)
    Tatooine Planet set ($8)
Lego Star Wars Minfig watches ($8.68) 50% off - good deal on Darth Maul, Vader, Boba Fett, Yoda watches with minifigs

Could be a few more, but that's all I recall at the moment!
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
For the watches, are the minifigs legit figs? And does that round piece with the 8 bumps (which I'm assuming goes over the face of the watch) connect to any standard LEGO pieces? I've never actually bought any of the watches and just pass over them in the store. My kids have been asking about them now though.
  • ZonZon Member Posts: 213
The minifigs are legit, not Chinese (no numbered hands anyhow), though someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The 8 bump piece is of no Lego use that I've found.

At the local Walmarts near the bay area, prices are going from memory so they may be off a bit but only by change:

    Fairfield, Ca

    7931 T-6 Jedi Shuttle ($50 - 2 left)
7930 Bounty Hunter Assault Gunship ($40 - 1 left in rough shape)
9490 Droid Escape ($18 - Not clearance but "limited time discount")
    7065 Alien Mothership ($50 - 1 left)
    7051 Tripod Invader ($16 - bunch left)
4866 The Knight Bus ($30 - bunch left)

    Vacaville, Ca

    4195 Queen Anne's Revenge ($101 - 1 left)
4866 The Knight Bus ($30 - bunch left)

    Up to 30% off

I've found what @MA1234 says is very true, too. Visit various stores in an area, because what is priced down at one store may not be priced down at another. The need for shelf-space, for incoming sets, plays a huge role in sales prices, too! and that is a store-by-store situation... depending on current in-store stock.

@sidersdd if you are interested in the Lego watches also check out woot.com. They periodically get them in at pretty good prices. I got a toy story and city fireman watch for my kids there at $10 each plus $5 shipping (total). I don't have them with me now to say if they're legit, but I know the alien seemed the same quality as the ones from the toy story sets.

The last Target summer sale I spent a bit too much time going to the three stores nearby to scout the best deals. I think I still have a few amazing purchases in my secret stash of discount Legos. It may be best if I hold off until the discounts are better before I go crazy-overboard.

Grabbed the last Clone Turbo Tank today for 30% off. Another store had a ton of Sith Infiltrators for $49.98 so I might check on them in a week or two and see if they drop to 50% or 75% before getting any.

Note: at Target if the clearance sticker price ends in an 8 (XX.98 for example) it will still go down, if it ends in a 4 (XX.94) that is the final price

^ that's a good bit of info. How did you learn that?

I brought it up in the TRU R U for Real? thread back in January.

And as for pricing, what would stop other retailers like Target and Amazon from taking a cue from TRU and going "Hey, if TRU can get away with that, we should do it, too." Hey, it is a free market. Well, it looks like those two are doing exactly that, as reports are trickling in that they are artificially raising the MSRP on, so far, a few sets. If that trickle becomes an inundation, will the hue and cry be louder?

I know it's 'smart' shopping, but go shop 'where the poor people live, the ghettos live' that just strikes me as wrong from a societal point of view.

Target Saddle Rock in Aurora, CO has the 7962 @ 30% off ($63), and then other sets at 15% off. A couple other target in Aurora had 7962 at 15% off only (and would not match)

It will vary store-to-store what they mark down and how quickly. What someone said earlier is fairly true, a store that deals heavily in Lego will reduce slower and start with a lot of 15% offs while a store who does not will start with a lot of 30% offs. I think the biggest factor is how much clearance there is in toys overall. If there is a ton they will markdown quicker to get rid of it in time for the new stuff to fit. If there isn't a whole lot it could easily languish on a couple endcaps for a month

Don't forget to check LEGO games. I've been waiting for a deal on Minotaurus forever, finally found it for 30% off at Target last night.

Other deals were as posted, nothing better than 30% off. Some sets were also jacked up above MSRP, like Knight's Bus for $48. Crazy when I can go across the street and buy it from Wal Mart clearance for $25.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ yeah the bus gets me. I can go across town to the other Target and it is still $34.99 but the one has it marked up then on clearance. I'll be interested to see if the other Target follows suit eventually. Will give me an idea of which Target is the shady deals type and will just shop at the better one when I'm buying regular stuff.

Stopped at target too look, same 15% offs as most people have seen, same major sets. Rep. Frigate, Black Pearl, T-6 Shuttle, Gen Grivious Fighter ect ect.

No QAR's or any potter sets.
  • llanowarsoldierllanowarsoldier Member Posts: 357
The Target by me didnt do any mark-up at all on their clearance items. I'm waiting for the Jedi Shuttle to come down a bit more in price though. Most Targets around me are full of them.
  • BuriedinBricksBuriedinBricks Member Posts: 1,367
Nearest Target had a few things on clearance, but the Falcons had already been cleared out. Still a few Republic Cruisers at around $101
  • bmwlegobmwlego Member Posts: 819
I've found LEGO marked down after a mark up s well. Not happy about this situation as Target is normally my prime supplier of marked down LEGO. I'll see how the next rounds of markdowns go.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,624
I did notice the marked up prices were attached to the shelf ribbon so the $42 Knight Bus was their price since January (or last product set) and not just a switch before clearance time. Still you have to wonder why they started doing that.
  • gmpirategmpirate Member Posts: 1,654
Visited several Targets on my travels today. There's definitely a lot of pricing inconsistencies -- regular and clearance.

    Things I remember:
    Black Pearls $120
    Knight's Bus $43
No markdowns on Falcons at all and every store had them save one
    1 TT at $102
    2 QA at $102
1 HP Castle @ $95 (all others at regular price)
    many Frigates -- "most" reduced
some Darth Maul & Grievous clearances, some not
1 Knights Bus on clearance for $36 :P
Lots of Shuttles on clearance at $51
Some smaller PotC sets on clearance (not much)

    Southern CA area

I work at target and supervise the electronics/toy department and as most people have said the markdowns vary by store but also vary by day with no particular day of the week that mark downs happen it all just depends on the volume the store does and the stock they have remaining like last week were we had markdowns on Monday and Thursday and the only Lego item on clearance was QAR
  • ecmo47ecmo47 Member Posts: 2,101
^ Do employees get first shot at the cleanance items? Do you get to stack an employee discount on top of a clearance price? I always wondered if it was worth it to be a part time employee to take advantage of that opportunity.
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,624
the discount stacked when I worked there. You don't really get first shot, except that if you are there when it gets marked your odds are pretty good. A few years back I snagged all the remaining Republic Fighter Tanks for about $20 each when my shift ended on Christmas Eve
  • DKissingerDKissinger Member Posts: 23
^^employees always have to wait at least 15 minutes after the clearance items have been placed on the floor if they are on the clock
  • mathewmathew Member Posts: 2,099
Found Destiny's Bounty for $55.98. I went ahead and bought one (they had two). I previously bought two from the last Target BOGO but I'm returning those. I was going to sell one this Christmas but I'm not sure what kind of return I will get.

@mathew - Which Target had that?

FYI at the nearest Target store I found 3858 Heroica Waldurk for 50%. Not sure if this was part of the clearance or just for this local store.

I noticed one PoTC BP on the shelf at a local Target tonight: the shelf price was $99.99 but I went to go scan it to see if it might be marked down, and it scanned at $119.99! Now, this is the one I really want - as I found a QAR for $79 at Walmart a few weeks ago - but have had ZERO luck seeing any Black Pearls anywhere on the shelves, let alone marked down.
I may have to bite the bullet and pay full price for one from my local LEGO store - that is, unless anyone had one for less than retail with shipping for sale/trade (I live in Chicago) . . .
  • samiam391samiam391 Member Posts: 4,492
@jlpython- I'll be checking out my Walmart and a few other stores tomorrow possibly. If I see any Black Pearls on clearance, I'll try and pick you up one and then would be happy to ship it to you (as long as you pay shipping! ;-) )

@jlpython Serious? BP has been on sale on Amazon for the past week for 14% off.

@gmpirate I don't shop much online - I look to this site for sales and deals, and as far as I can recall, I haven't seen anyone mention that this set was on sale at Amazon. And this alleged Amazon sale must be over, because the best price I can find now with shipping is $93. That's why I'm trying to utilize the vast network of Bricksetters across these United States to score a better deal than what I have come across locally ;-)

Thanks for keeping an eye out! I'll gladly pay for shipping; I'd even be OK with the contents being taken out of the box and shipped in a smaller box, as this one is for my kids to play with (and maybe me . . . ); not something to be sold down the road.

I went to my local Target to see if I could get lucky and I found a bunch of Black Pearls for the awesome low price of $119.99 and Knight Buses a steal for $42.xx. I thought for a minute there that I was standing in Toys R Us.

Alright! Next time I'm at Walmart I'll check it for you. Was un-able to make it today. I'll be in touch.

Has anyone noticed the same at KMart? I thought the prices were similar to Walmart/Target and today I noticed many of the LEGOs were $2-3 higher. It was mostly the higher priced sets( SW Tie and HP Bus was $38.99) Just wasn't sure if this is another isolated instance or if this is the new trend of price increases so they can mark them down.
  • rolvtdrolvtd Member Posts: 52
^I noticed this at my local K-Mart as well last week, but the oddest thing is that only a month ago, the prices at that same store were regularly priced. It seems to be a recent development at the store.

Found very slight discounts at my local Target. Lots and lots of AC Tripod invaders and SW Bounty Hunter gunships, will be keeping an eye on those as the price drops.

I can never find any deals at Kmarts around me (urban or suburban). I've pretty much given up there.
