not a good enough saving in my opinion.

Is this 'the start' do you think?
  • rocaorocao Administrator Posts: 4,290
^ yes, it possibly is. I don't recollect there ever being a discount on 10188 on amazon. Currently they have ~380 left. I've been checking periodically over the past few months. I think this is down from ~500 two months ago.

How do you tell how many they have?
  • prof1515prof1515 Member Posts: 1,550
The Death Star is scheduled for discontinuation in 2011 so this might be a good deal. If you don't have the set already it is definitely a good deal.

^^ You add them to your cart, and then you go into your cart and change the quantity to 999. It will add as many as it can, so if there are less than that number, you'll see precisely how many.

That's a great tip for checking stock levels @rocao, thank you very much! Never knew you could do that! :)

I went to my local lego store today(only 10miles away) and picked up my Death Star as I know it is getting ready to be discontinued. I of course called ahead 1st to make sure they had them, they had 2, so I had them hold 1 for me. So I get there and the guy brings it out to me still in the Lego outer box. Needless to say, I am happy I got mine and used my VIP points toward's its purchase. Still not sure if I'm going to build it or hang on to it.

Also, got some weird looks hauling that thing back to my car since the store is located at a mall. Box is HUGE.

^^ You can do the same thing at TRU.com as well.. usually. That is how I determine what to BOGO first when I see the sales

I just clicked through the link and it is $399?

I bought 2 when TRU had the BOGO 50% coupon for Star Wars sets around Easter.

I just tried the trick by adding 999 to the cart of the Death Star set. Amazon will only let you add 100 items to your shopping cart, so adding more than that does not tell you how many they have in stock. They at least have 100.

^ It looks like the price has gone back up to $399 :/

Did you buy it from TRU online or a B&M store? The BOGO 50% sale during easter excluded Star Wars. Was there an actual coupon (coupon code online) that you used that allowed Star Wars to be included?

    ^ I bought on-line as most B&M stores don't carry it. It was a coupon code on-line.

If I had unlimited amounts of cash, I should have bought 100 or so. Assuming they would go up in value. It is hard to predict. Depends on how many are out there. I think a lot of people saw what happened with the UCS MF and are assuming the same will happen with the Death Star, which leads me to believe it won't happen with it.

^ Was it this past Easter 2011 or Easter 2010? I don't remember any mention of a coupon just last month, but I did a web search and I saw that there was one in 2010. Sorry to belabor it, but I spend so much time trying to stay on top of sales, that I hate to find out that I missed one that I would have jumped on.

And the 999 quantity in the Amazon cart does work. I just did it and was shown that they have 331. Are you entering 999 and not 1000?

^I had one other item in my cart and I think it did something funny. It is working now and I get the same result.

Here is the coupon. Came out on Sat, Apr 23, 2011 05:13 PM.

^ Ah... I remember that now, except I thought it was in-store only. I definitely would have purchased 2 more death stars had I known it was online as well, although I already have 3 :P

from lego.com for vip its 5%off (redeemed by standard vip bonus points) plus free shipping which expires at the end of may. that and the dwindling supply at amazon drove me to buy it.
thats alot of money to spend on one set but the reviews were incredibly positive. i dont want to be stuck without a deathstar when they stop selling them. I also bought the emerald night which im afraid of going away(although i dont know about that i just figured it has been 2 years).

I got some nice comments from my local Lego store when I bought this when they were doing double reward points. 800 reward points that I am still saving for some summer sets!

Emerald Night, like the Death Star, is marked for discontinuation this year.
  • Rainstorm26Rainstorm26 Member Posts: 1,013
^^I also bought one when they had double points, but I had to return it when I bought the two from TRU at the BOGO 50% off. I don't think my wife would have appreciated me having three of these.

^She would have done when you sold the extras for $600 each a year later and bought her a new pair of shoes with the profits!! :o)
  • Rainstorm26Rainstorm26 Member Posts: 1,013
^I toyed with that idea; however, if she found out before it was retired, I would have been severly reprimanded and my funds would have been cut off for future purchases. I did this with the UCS MF when I bought one and didn't tell her. When she found out, they had already retired them and I told her that I could sell it for 3x what I paid for it. She calmed down and thus Death Star purchase planning began in earnest.
