No, unfortunately, I didn't open a box and find this! I have an overseas customers that wants 2x9493 sets and was wondering if anybody out there could tell me if it's possible to fit all the parts bags into one box. Thanks.

Yeah, there's room in the 9493 box for 2 of them for sure as it has plenty of space - so much for the new smaller boxes. Does anyone know if that plan has been scrapped?

Box size is related to perceived value on the shelf. I doubt Lego would try and squeeze a £50 set into one used for a current £30 set, people would think that value for money was taking a huge dive.

it does feel like the boxes have gotten a tad better for 2012 for the most part. Most of the sets I've opened this year have been much fuller. Some, like 6857, have even been downright crammed.

Thanks for the replies. On the box size issue, you gotta have a bigger box to make customers feel better about the price of the item.

UCS R2 is a big box and it is full. Feels far too many parts for the deceptively large model - It's not particularly tall but it's wide and nigh on solid inside.

I built a 9493 today and it looked less than half full when opened.

Seems to me like the boxes are thinner than they used to be. Still big in terms of their height and width dimensions.

Compare the New Tie Fighter with the Previous Tie Advanced.
403 pc and 4 minifigures to 304 pc and 2 minifigures. They are the same size box.

^ Not always - Darth Vader's TIE (8017) often comes in a smaller box than the new TIE Fighter, almost half the size...
