My first was set 105, universal building set. I think it was the year after I got a set with those funky figures that used 2x2 blocks for torsos.

We always had loads of Lego in the house, because my older brother was (is!) really into it, I know he had lots of classic space. I'm pretty sure I had Duplo but couldn't tell you exactly what.

The oldest set I have in my collection is http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=3654-1 (randomly actually older than me, but I'm sure it was mine rather than big brother's! Perhaps @robnwcc can remember? :-)
    image

The first proper (ie minifig) sets I remember drooling over in the catalogue and getting as 100% mine were the Pirates range. Not sure which was the first but I know I played for hours with http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6270-1
Still got it, but lost one of the rigging bits :(
    image

Could a lovely mod please add the pics for me? @yellowcastle, @Matthew, @anybody?? Done - Matthew.

Hard to remember, defenitly a lot of loose bricks and I remember these 2 sets I got together with my brother :

    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=345-1
    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=346-2

My sister has the box with old Lego now including the ground plates of these sets.

    Mine's the Town House.

Sometimes, I wish I had this set.

I know it was a BASIC set from the early 80s. The first "real" set I remember getting is this space set. I remember thinking the robot was absurdly cute. Also, looking back on this set almost makes me weep to see the HORDE of printed pieces. Oh the good ol' days. =)

Lego space set 497 (as shown by Yellow Castle) was one of my first. Vaders Tie Fighter (8017?) was what bought me back as an AFOL, and at the time I thought UCS Falcon was just stupid money - wish I could get one for RRP now to build!

The first set I recall really playing with as a kid was 671-1 http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=671-1 (which I guess is the European equivalent of the set DaveE mentions above).

The oldest set I own is 360-1, which was handed down from some distant family friend shortly after.

Got my Lego back from my parents when my kids were born and was happy to find all the pieces for my first set.image

The first set I remember playing with was 570 Firehouse.

    But that was my brother's.

The first set that was mine was 948 Go-Kart.

^^^ Odin, I think that I actually owned that set as well. Unfortunately, my mom got rid of my Lego (and for some reason kept a lot of other junk). My memory is also fuzzy when it comes to Lego. I can remember just about every GI Joe, Transformers, MASK, Star Wars toy that I had.

I too love all the old printed blocks. As simple as the printed designs were I think they still look cool. Of course I'm nostalgic nowadays for anything prior to 2000. Life was simpler, more enjoyable and hopeful in the 20th century ; ).

Glad I'm not the only one from the 3 digit set number era... ;o)

For me it was set 700/1 Basic Set. It was the Christmas before the year LEGO was introduced in the USA (1961)... (it was the first year for LEGO in Britain) and my uncle in Germany sent me this set. Although the box is long gone after a 1/2 century, I still have the gray 10x20 thick baseplate from this set.

Back then you had to ignore the box top image... in the 1949-65 era what was on the box top of basic LEGO sets had no relationship to what was inside. Back when I got this set, it was 1 baseplate, a bunch of white and red bricks and red classic windows/door.

I can't remember as I would have been very young - my older sisters (all 4 of them!) all had LEGO so it is a bit blurry. But I distinctly remember getting this when I was 6 or 7, no doubt it was the biggest I'd received to date.

The first set I remember playing with, must have been the 515 Duplo Trolley and Arches set:
    image

The bricks went to a younger cousin, but I still have the 2x4 with a hole in it, that was used as a handle.

I had a lot of basic bricks during my childhood, but the first set I remember building, was the 600 Police Car
image - I think it must have been a gift from the store at LEGOLAND.

  • caperberrycaperberry Member Posts: 2,226
^ 600 was great. We had a few of them to keep our Town safe!
  • hoyatableshoyatables Member Posts: 873
My first set -- hard to pin down exactly, though #6600 (and #6602, a similar fire chief car) were definitely among the first, along with a basic block set that came in a red "briefcase."

But the first true "set" I remember was the Fire Station. LOVED the garage doors.

Thanks for bringing up some old friends!! Although I'm not completely sure, I think of the Moon Landing as my first. Also had (still have) the Galaxy Explorer and Fire House others have shown.

The one I remember first was: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=775-1. I loved this set. You could play with it in the water. The rotating water cannons were really cool. You could also make a short boat if you pulled out the middle section of the hull.

This was my first set as well. Still have 5 pieces from it.

and many like it (early 70s).

I waited excitedly for a few weeks in 1978 for the Weetabix set 1589: Main Street to arrive:image

I had Brix Blox first for a few years, then one Christmas I received 6980 Galaxy Commander. What an amazing set! Never went back to BrixBlox... Too bad I sold all my childhood lego in a garage sale when I was 18 to raise some cash before joining the Army.
  • jadedancjadedanc Member Posts: 1,302
Boy I see some awesome sets here! Unfortunately, I never had Legos as a child. I was into SW figs, cars and mud pies lol. My first was the last HP castle last year.

    It was one of these:

196 Aeroplane, 250 Antique Car, or 613 Biplane. I do recall 487 Space Cruiser was my 1st Space set & I thought it was so cool. I can still build it from memory.
  • greekmickgreekmick Member Posts: 710
This is a little embarrassing but I never played with LEGO when I was a child. I was into Star Wars and football too much to care about anything else. It was only when my son started to take an interest that I got caught up with it. So my first set was this one. I had originally bought it for my 3 year old son for last Christmas but decided I should take note of the age on the box so kept it for myself. This was the start of another expensive romance.image

My first sets were definitely from McDonald's Happy Meals in the 80's. I was really young though, so I don't remember exactly how they looked, but I do remember there was a car and a plane (and you could build them different ways. Oh, and the yellow bricks with painted black eyes! I remember those.).

Consequently, Lego is how I discovered Santa Claus doesn't really exist. I was 3 or 4, and I remember that my mother would always get 2 Happy Meals even though I was the only child (at the time), I always wanted the other one too, but she'd say no and only give me the one toy. But those polybags later showed up in my stocking, and I asked her, "DOES SANTA WORK AT MCDONALD'S TOO?" to which my mother replied, "No, stupid, *I* bought those for you".

Well, she probably left out the stupid part, but that's how it sounded to me, even as a child!

I never had a single lego set as a child ... just a large bucket of second hand lego bricks / windows / wheels and a couple of baseplates to share with my two brothers. The only figures we had were the large homemaker ones. I just bought some for nostalgia.

Oh I have a story about set #590 above. My family was at Target & I was trying to convince my parents to buy Rocket Launcher (462?) & my sister wanted #590. It was $15 & my argument was "hey, 462 is only $6! Less than half as much!" They bought 590 & I was so mad! Even though we BOTH would get to play w/ it...I guess I didnt make much sense back then.

My first set was the 1984 version of the King's Castle (#6080). Looking back, it was a pretty good set to start with!

Coming from humble beginnings, my little sister and I didn't have much growing up. But this Classic Space M-Tron set was a shining beacon of all that was magical from childhood. Memories of eagerly waking up to catch the Saturday morning cartoons and building custom space ships using parts from this set with other loose space sets my parents bought at garage sales and swapmeets. Truly priceless...

    http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6956-1

No matter how many sets I've bought and built in the past half year, nothing is coming close to the magic I found in that one ~20 years ago.

The first set I remember is 6695-1 (Shell Tanker Truck). I did have many others but this one truly sticks out it it was the "big" Lego, and I was so excited!

I can't do an image from here, I'm on my iPad...sorry.

When recently going through my tubs from my youth, found that I still had this guy complete. Most well played with set of the bunch. And according to my father the box for it is flattened with all my other boxes in the basement. Can't wait to dig those out : )

I can't say with certainty what the first set I played with was because only a few bricks have survived from that era. However, the first set I remember getting as a present was 6801 Moon Buggy.
  • tomcatttomcatt Member Posts: 24
Didn't have LEGO as a kid ('not a girl's toy'), but played with my little brother's. Started my own collection as an AFOL in 1999 when SW came out, but can't remember exactly which set was first. Something from that first year of SW - probably 7101 Lighsaber Duel cuz I thought Darth Maul was so cool.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
I dont remember specifically which set was my first but was thinking it was either 7722 steam train or 8847 technic dragster. The dragster was released 2 years earlier so I'm going to go with that as my first.

I posted my first LEGO set earlier on this thread... a very old 700/1 set (it was in Hieroglyphics! ;-)

But speaking of very old LEGO sets, today I posted this on the LEGO Facebook page (from my LEGO DVD).... the very earliest LEGO sets... called Automatic Binding Bricks (1949-54)... they are... (top to bottom)...

    1) a 1950 basic set with thin lettering, sold in Denmark/Sweden (limited Swedish sales from a company called "Geas Konstharts", only lasted about a year due to poor sales).
    2) a 1951 basic set with fancy lettering, sold in Denmark.
    3) a 1952 basic set with fancy lettering and "LEGO Mursten", sold in Denmark.
    4) a 1953 basic set (Norway prohibited toy imports in the 50s, so a Norwegian company "Svein Stromberg & Co. set up a LEGO subsidiary called "A/S Norske LEGO", and this red box set was sold in Norway from 1953-54.

I can't remember whih set was my first. I remember a tub of "Happy Days Building Blocks" (these were kind of like a low-budget Lego with green rectangular baseplates which broke very easily as I recall). But I'm sure I had some Lego before that, even if it was just supplementary-type sets. The earliest Lego sets I can remember are:
    616 Cargo Ship
622 Tipper Truck (I remember loving the big yellow skip)
886 Space Buggy (I think I bought several of these over a few years. Well, they were cheap, and I never really used to save my pocket money for very long. I was too anxious to get another Lego set)
891 Two-Man Scooter (I remember the tail strut, the wing pieces and the two 'boosters' at the front as at the time I thought they were unusual)

My first set as a kid would have been #487. As an adult collector, the first one I stumbled upon was the #7190, from there it has all been downhill.

Looking at the bricks from my childhood that my son now has we (me and my two older brothers) must have had the family set - http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=200-1

But the first set I remember having for myself is 602 - Fire Chief's Car - http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=602-1

Probably still have most of the pieces mixed in with the others but I know the trans blue clyinder didn't last too long and got broken pretty quickly! Still to this day annoys me that the fireman didn't fit in his car - what was the point?
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
^ I got a #6602 at a garage sale recently and thought that was interesting as well that the car is both so small compared to the minifig and that he can't sit in it even if it wasnt the right scale.

I think my first set was 6350 aka Pizza To Go

    image

When I was 5 or so. I still have it now... but a lot of the pieces are horribly chewed. I have to apply pressure to get the pieces to fit. Gross! I wish my younger self had treated the bricks with more respect!

My first set was 6041. It was a great set, I was able to purchase a 100% complete used set on ebay recently :-D
