Lego Grand Opening Sets

I was casually searching Google search via images for grand opening sets through the years, and have found so many really cool designs. Some of the sets are buildable from close examination of the images; but many require even basic instructions to build.

I could only find a couple instructions on flickr. Curious if anyone knows of a spot to locate more of these? Bricklink lists the sets, but no instructions. And peeron is no help. I know Brickset doesn't host instructions. Maybe someone has these on CD.

Given the limited nature of these sets; somebody who opened each one would have to scan them...I suppose.

Did you try the Building Instructions part of Lego.com? I just did a quick check using 330000 Brick Apple as a test, and the instructions are there.

The Lego.com site has numbered set instructions - for the most part, the grand opening sets did not have set numbers. Or, if they did, the set number (in tiny print on the front page of the instructions) isn't found on the instructions site.

Through some searching, and contacting the people who took the images, it is possible to find instructions. There is only one that I have not yet been successful finding: Wiesbaden. I have not been able to find an image of the back of this model either. Anyone on Brickset willing to share an image of the back of the model, or a scan of this instructions? (According to the set listing, there are users who own this set!)

    Thanks.

I see the Lego store sets on ebay selling between 85-100 bucks. Spend $35 get the free set, sell it for $100. You get your legos free and $65 in your pocket. Not bad. Kicking myself for not going and getting one.(only 20 min drive but had to work).

    I think its overpriced.

I'd like an inventory for that set, I was hoping it'd be possible to buy the parts for less

^ The instructions are here on brickset I think. I bricklinked it (apart from the 1x1 clear round tiles on the roof) for about £15/$22. That was very early on the day the instructions were found, so it may be that prices/availability have changed since then.

The Lego 2x2 tile shop sign sticker is also included in the Lego city truck (9221) sticker sheet for the back doors.

Hope this helps anyone trying to build their own set.

^3221 and thanks for the info, hadn't realised that. Will be useful for my modular sized Lego store.

It is worth what people will pay. So it is worth $85-100.

You get your legos free and $65 in your pocket.
You could say the same about anyone that buys Lego and sells it later when not available at a profit, or people that part out minifigs from sets and sell them off individually.

    @pteric
If its selling at that price it isn't overpriced, its demand
  • ptericpteric Member Posts: 156
The more stores that open offering this set, the more sets that are gonna' be out there, dropping the price.

The 2x2 Lego tile is also available on the Lego Nintendo DSi cases (that quite often can be found pretty cheaply now!) - I bought one in GAME in the UK for £5 recently :)

Sorry my bad 3221, should really have been making children's pack lunch at the time ;o)

^ Don't apologise it was great info. Already grabbed a sticker sheet from BrickLink.

I was able to get the 1x1 clear round tiles from Lego direct. $0.96 for 10 of them (husband wanted extras).

I am waiting for the parts to build the store. I put in an order from PaB and then the rest from Brinklink. I think I am more at about $60, that is with shipping. But I am the not the best at finding the cheapest parts. I bought most through PaB.

Mmm, it's not that black and white. The sellers are setting the price in the first place and looking to one another's prices to set their own. So yes, if they get it wrong and sell zero of them, they went way too high; but they are still creating a ripple effect on prices.

I reckon there are a lot of buyers who presume that refusing to purchase overpriced items will have no effect on high prices.
  • roxioroxio Member Posts: 1,384
^I agree, but I said if its selling. The buyers set the price if they buy at those prices.
  • caperberrycaperberry Member Posts: 2,226
Yes, I understood that - my point was that the act of a buyer buying at an inflated price doesn't completely remove the seller from the justification of price, or indeed other sellers who may have pushed the price up. It feels too simplistic to say the buyers set the price.

In fact, a seller doesn't even have to sell in order to push the price up for others - like this charming BL seller who I am sure has no expectation of anyone paying the asking price. An extreme example of sellers deliberately inflating prices.

What I think is hilarious is how much someone will pay for one of the Grand Opening mini stores. Between pieces in my own collection, Bricklink and Lego direct (for the 1x1 clear round tiles and 3221 sticker sheet, I have spent a whole whopping $10. I don't need the box or printed instructions to enjoy this set.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
^ agreed. I never understand this kind of buyer.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
^ ^^ I can think of several reasons

    (1) Buyer wants to collect the sealed set
    (2) Buyer wants to collect the set with box and instructions
    (3) Buyer wants to buy and resell at a higher price (e.g., to OUS)
    (4) Buyer doesn't know about instructions available to allow piecing together themselves
    (5) Buyer places high value on time and doesn't want to bother identifying and ordering parts
    (6) Buyer has funds to buy anything they want like this

^I like #6 best, as it throws all arguments out the window with it.

^ While I don't understand, I also am happy they exist, they feed my Lego addiction! :)
  • starfire2starfire2 Member Posts: 1,335
@sidersdd: I get what you're saying. I don't disagree, I just think it is hilarious how much they are paying. I will have the same thing for a fraction of the price they are paying.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
i'ts kind of like the "I'm going to pay 5x the retail price to have (shoes, xbox, whatever) 1 week before I could have it for 1x the retail price". Insanity.
  • sidersddsidersdd Member Posts: 2,432
^ I see it all the time with new minifigs - especially Star Wars and Super Heroes. I'm guessing it'll be the same with the LotR figs.

Kinda hoping for a 're-opening' of some of the stores in IL to get my hands on one, otherwise I'm not breaking the bank for this

About this thread, which is cool as I personally liked this Lego store opening set a lot and downloaded the instructions to try my hand to build it with customized bricks. But I wanted to know, what would be the cost to order the bricks of this set? As this is a terrific gift idea for my son, niece and nephew :) Any suggestions?
  • CCCCCC Member Posts: 20,526
The answer is on the thread.

    Oops, thanks @CCC :)

What I'm disappointed about is the fact that Vancouver FINALLY got a Lego store, but what do I do? Move halfway around the world and miss the grand opening! LOL.
  • prevereprevere Member Posts: 2,923
I've got a few of these 100% complete with correct colors from Bricklinking the parts - except the tile is decorated (new) and not a sticker. If anyone is interested PM me.

Similar to me. For years, I lived on South Shore of MA ... move to Western MA, and the Braintree MA store opens (at the mall 1 mile from where I used to work!!)

Did you have any luck? I too have been searching for the instructions for this set for quite some time and cannot find it.
