Indeed it is, I was surprised to see it broken down in a bulk lot, being less than two years old, and I was disappointed by how many parts were bent/broken.  I'm restoring it to its former glory though!

I think I saw the dark forest set at the bottom sell for more than that (sealed) on its own...

    Very nice find!
What shop did you find them at, if I may ask?

It was a bricks and minifigs. I thought it was weird they wouldn’t know they are worth quite a bit more than that. They said an old woman brought them in earlier that day and said they had just been sitting in storage for about 25 years.

Oh, I think they definitely knew the value. I think you were just in the right place at the right time.

Unlike the Bricks & Minifig stores I've been too, the Portland ones seem to actually offer deals on sets like these instead of adding 10% to the 6 month average on BL like some other ones.

Yeah, maybe they did. I’m used to the B&M near me in Utah that does exactly what you just described.
  • FizyxFizyx Member Posts: 1,364
I know that my local B&M does minimal selling on-line, and so they are often bound by the fact that they have to sell in person.  It's actually kind of surprising, in this day and age, how much in-person selling can limit the sales potential of items.  Are those sets worth more, if sold online to the right person, than the store sold them for?  Absolutely.  But it you don't sell online, then you are depending on that 'right person' to walk through your door, and that's something that could takes weeks, months, or even years.  And when you consider the costs involved in keeping the sets on hand for that potential length of time, it can be worth more to the shop to 'discount' the sets and move them out the door faster.

TL;DR: My B&M has definitely had some great deals on sets they would have had a hard time moving, but they also are not afraid to gouge on sets that they know the local clientele will overspend on :P

Not in my hands yet, but my mom found 4 Dumbledore's Office at Walmart marked $22 each. She bought them all just like I trained her. I get one, my grandkid gets 1 and the other 2 are going to other family kids.  I never see deals like that when I'm out and just have to assume it was mismarked? Don't care. Mine now. ;)

I agree that this was probably a lot of right time, right place. We have a plethora of B&M around here, and while there are some good deals to be found, their markup is typically above BL averages. In any case, you definitely found a great deal!

So; I'm never sure how to feel in cases like this. For sure I would have been the guy to shove you out of the way and bought them all ahead of you. But does B&M get the credit for not trying to sell for 10% over BL or how little did the old lady get for the sets for them to be able to sell them for $1000.00? As a business or just as a person should they have explained to her the actual retail value for these sets? Maybe they did. Glad you got a great deal but maybe the old lady was Jimmy's mom!

To me, a business should not need to explain to an old lady (young kid, middle aged man, anyone) that if she goes online and sells them individually then she might be able to get more for the things she wants to get rid of than if she sells them in bulk to a reseller. If she has the internet, then she should have used it. If she doesn't have it, then telling her she can get more for them on the internet is pointless. The fact that the store is selling them below (online) retail prices suggests that they know that a local buyer will not go much higher than that. Send her away to look up prices elsewhere and she will just go to another local trader.

People knowing what things sell for will often stop a sale to a reseller anyway as they will try and push for too high a price, without realising that the reseller is both taking a risk and actually doing something to find a buyer.

Maybe this belongs in the one that got away thread since it is not yet in my possession. However, I offered $100-$200 depending on the condition of the lot. I pick up in three hours and counting...

Sorry it didn't work out, but I'm glad to know they are staying with a passionate TFOL, instead of being sold out from under you to a sniper with a higher offer.

Nearing the end of the haul building process & 6 more sets have reveled themselves- I love this part where you had NO IDEA they were in there...

    6020 Magic Shop
    6338 Hurricane Harbor
6900 Cyber Saucer (no mask 😟😃😜)
    71734 Kai's Blade Cycle
    76168 Capt America Mech Armor
    76171 Miles Morales Mech Armor

Not too excited about those last 3. I legit thought the 2 red halves of Kai's Cycle were a DUPLO motorbike. 😳😳😬

What's the deal with these online (only?) instructions? Showing what parts to have "in hand", the minifig walking to show completion progress, & its HOORAY! pose at the end, the explosion behind the finished models? Empty hands to show "ALL DONE!!" Really?

Why can't the builder just look ahead if they're so impatient?  Is this how all the manuals are now?

(This is a 2021 set BTW & not "Juniorized" AFAIK)

I mean, to be fair, 71734 literally IS a 4+/Juniors set, soooo :P

Shame on you for using Bricklink and not Brickset! 😂😂😂

In all seriousness, Brickset does tag it as juniors and if you look at the box art it shows 4+ which is what Lego replaced juniors with. Much better to keep sets in the correct theme rather than housing them all under juniors like they used to!

Knew it was a 4+ as soon as I saw the two halves. Honestly, I think the little dude walking across the bottom of the instructions is really cute. My son and I built the #75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe and we both laughed at Third Sister toddling across the bottom.

Keep an eye on clearance sales and holiday deals. Check online marketplaces like eBay and Craigslist. Look for discontinued or hard-to-find sets, which may be sold at a discount. Check out Lego Store Pick-A-Brick wall for bulk parts at discounted prices

Found #21336 The Office on eBay for $55 shipped. It was a customer return, and it appears to be complete. All of the minifigures showed up for work.

I don’t understand why they stuffed all of the empty plastic bags back into the box though. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Missing four common parts, and I’ll replace several stickers that are very skewed. Very pleased for $55.

Inventory done, missing pieces worth 6$. Some old gray pieces thati dont have, 1 white bandana, a croocked wheel, and a few of those 1x2 log bricks, and 2 old type black fence pieces. Order put on BL.
Some more waiting, but at least it will be 100% complete, minus the instructions book.
that one is way too expensive for my taste.

I found a boxed one a couple of pages back. Only £10, but missing all figs and a few notable parts so about £70 missing. Surely going to sell it on after but will be glad to have experienced it!

Fortunately i had all the minifigs and accessories. I specifically looked for them and asked for more picutres when in doubt before i bought the set. I even got 13 rifles, 6 sabres and 5 pistols, so a lot more than the set needed. Also the horses and saddles look great, no clips broken, or scratches on them.
I`m glad it only missed structural pieces, and the bandana is an easy replacement, already on it`s way.

Brickmania's Minneapolis store has a table of random parts- mostly unused, a few older parts- a small bag for $7, a large bag for $15. The large is roughly the size of a large PAB cup. I pick anything interesting- especially old Space parts, finger hinges, parts with clips, any old dark grey parts, or any part in a color I don't have. Today I found a reddish brown 6x6 plate to replace the one I broke while dismantling my Fantasy Era castle sets.
I also found this Sand Red piece- which was only in the Life on Mars subtheme of Space, in set #7314 Recon Mech RP.
I have no idea what I'll use it for, but: "Hey! Sand Red- SCORE!"  :)

Oooh I think that's the one I redesigned in half-red, half black & had it attack my Lego City when I'd set it up every spring.

@alzamba I’ve also seen these at two airports here in US.  I had to do a double take the first time.  Unfortunately, nothing I was looking for so didn’t get a chance to actually use one.

Plus, going by the price hikes of literally everything else in an airport, I can't see anything there being a great deal!

But I don't know the right thread either...

While €24.00 for #76184 (bottom left) isn't cheap, if it keeps a kid quiet on the plane it would be a bargain!

Until they drop a piece of course.....
