Thought it would be fun to discuss favorite Lego of-the-year stuff so here goes:
Favorite set of 2022: #76989 Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck. One of my favorite game franchises in Lego was something I never expected to see and they hit it out the park with the design. The price point was also really reasonable. Aloy minifigure was done masterfully with her focus printed on her head and the trans-blue glow molded into the hairpiece over it.
Runner up: #80036 Monkie Kid City of Lanterns. My favorite theme/long term project is a massive Ninjago City and this set delivered tons of great content I will be repurposing into my city.
Favorite GWP: #40567 Forest Hideout. Still have the original from childhood and loved this faction as a kid. Remake is excellent and generous as a GWP. My only regret is not getting more than one of these.
Wild Card (Favorite Lego anything else): Taking the family to Billund last spring and visiting the House and theme park was just incredible. My youngest still asks if we can move to Denmark 7 months after. Hopefully next year this category will be filled by me getting to display with my LUG again this summer and having enough Ninjago City built to be an interesting addition.
Disappointing Set of 2022: #60347 City Grocery Store. Even though I got it for roughly half price it still felt hollow and lacking when finished. Perhaps that was partially due to the simple construction methods. Not bad set by any means and still glad I have it for the price paid but would be really unhappy if I spent $70 on it.
Most Anticipated Set of 2023: Blacktron GWP. So hyped for this.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to all of you and I look forward to another year of Brickset foruming with all of you in '23!
Comments
Best GWP: Forest Hideout.
Best set: Lion Knights Castle. I built it, and enjoyed building it, but don't own it and wouldn't pay the RRP for it.
Favorite set of 2022: I didn't buy many big sets this year, but waiting for me to open tomorrow from me (its become a tradition to treat myself to a big set to keep me going over the festive week!) is #10300 I'm a huge BTTF fan, watched the film in the cinema as a child and saw the stage show earlier this year. It looks like a pretty accurate replica of the time machine and I love the fact its a 3in1 build as well. I'm probably going with BTTF 2 flying car version as thats my favourite.
Runner up: #10497 Being a child of the 70s and growing up with Classic Space (or Space as we called it then!) The giant recreation of the Galaxy Explorer, a set I never owned in period, is a dream come true. So many great play features and despite the size, still just about swooshable
Favorite GWP: #40532 I really liked this years Modular hotel, but I bought I got it for my birthday in March, so missed the Vintage Taxi as GWP. I was lucky to pick it up for £20 at a local LEGO show near us. A simple vehicle and although a 1930s/40s inspired design, it fits perfectly with the building and inot my little street. I even like the taxi rank section of pavement that I was able to add to my own pavement too.
Wild Card (Favorite Lego anything else): Going along with @Bumblepants here with a LEGO themed trip out. After a couple of pandemic blighted years away, we made it back to LEGOLAND Windsor this year, Miss Speedy isn't really into LEGO as much as shes getting older, but was so excited to go back to LL. We did all the rides we wanted to and spent a lot of time looking around the amazing new giant sculptures in Mythica Land.
Disappointing Set of 2022: Less of a set, more a theme. Technic just didn't hit the spot this year. I usually pick up the flagship set to build over Christmas, but the helicopter did nothing for me. The huge McLaren F1 car was interesting and being a huge Motor racing fan I should love it, but I haven't watched race this year after the debacle of 2021 finale and horrid toxic nature of the vocal fan base. I'd much rather build one RoscoPC's amazing 70s F1 MOCs if I had the space and money. The vehicles on offer just did nothing for me, the best Technic set of the year... #30433 the polybag Volvo wheel loader!
Most Anticipated Set of 2023:There area few smallish sets I have on my 2023 wanted list, but nothing major. Hopefully Technic might offer something better suited to me next year or another large scale film car will come out. I have stickers and plans for some early 1980s SC scaled F1 car MOCs from Rebrickable, so maybe thats where the budget goes this time.
Runner up: #80035 Galactic Explorer, #75337 AT-TE Walker, #80037 Dragon of the East.
Favorite GWP: #40567 Forest Hideout.
Wild card: my birthday, building #71766 Lloyd's Legendary Dragon at the shore of Lake Superior.
Disappointing: nothing stands out as terrible, but #71772 The Crystal King I was quite excited for, but once built, it's just okay.
Most anticipated: #80043 Yellow Tusk Elephant.
(what a surprisingly great LEGO build, so much better in person, and probably the best $50 set I’ve ever built.)
Wild card: I went 2 years thinking I didn’t like the monkie kid sets and now own 3 with half a dozen more on my wishlist.
I have 28 of the 36 Monkie Kid sets released so far... #80035 Galactic Explorer is awesome. #80037 Dragon of the East is my second favorite.
Runner up: #21334 Jazz Quartet, I don't normally grab the ideas sets but this one was too cool to pass on.
Favorite GWP: #40532 Vintage Taxi, such a neat little set that sits nicely in my city.
Wild Card (Favorite Lego anything else): This one is a theme, Speed Champions. #76908 Lamborghini Countach and #76911 007 Austin Martin DB5. Also The Muppet CMF series.
Disappointing Set of 2022: None, I only grab what I really want so all are pretty good.
Most Anticipated Set of 2023: #10312 Jazz Club. Always look forward to the Modular series.
Favorite set of 2022: I'm going to have to stick with #10497 Galaxy Explorer here though there are a few right up there at the top... so see next.
Runner up: Either #10302 Optimus Prime or #10300 Back to the Future Time Machine would probably take my runner up spot, but #31129 Majestic Tiger could also easily fit into that spot. Tough choice to be honest!
Favorite GWP: This one is another really tough choice, we had so many great ones this year! #40566 Ray the Castaway, #40563 Tribute to the LEGO House, and #40567 Forest Hideout are all right up there... but I think I'm going to give my vote to #40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures
Wild Card (Favorite Lego anything else): How about I talk about Bricks Cascade for a minute here... my home convention is truly one of the highlights of my year, and this year was something truly special. I got to display my Classic Pirates collection for the first time in a really big way. It was a hit with the crowd and I was really happy with how it all came together. This was my first time doing a huge layout/display like this and it was definitely a learning experience, but in the end, I really loved every part of it. I am so excited for BC 2023 (planning a Western layout) and then coming back even bigger and better with an absolutely massive Pirates display at BC 2024!
Disappointing Set of 2022: This is actually a really hard one for me... because I can't say that I really have a disappointing set for the year, at least out of the sets I've purchased and built. I do have quite a backlog of unbuilt sets from this year, so there could be some disappointments in there, but overall, I'm pretty happy with what I've gotten this year!
Most Anticipated Set of 2023: Easily for me is the return of Lord of the Rings and all that entails, especially at this time the rumored D2C Rivendell! I'm really hoping that the Brickheadz and the D2C sets are just the frontrunners of more minifig scale sets!
Haven't got much to choose from as I only have 45 2022 sets (including GWPs) but here we go.
Favourite set: #76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck. Still don't know anything about the game it comes from but it's a fantastic build and is a visually stunning display piece.
Runner up: #10300 Back to the future Time Machine. Love the films so this was a must.
Favourite GWP: #40531 : Lars family Homestead kitchen. Finally a chance to get an official Beru Lars.
Wild Card (Favorite Lego anything else): Receiving a surprise gift in the Brickset Secret Santa made my LEGO year.
Disappointing Set of 2022: #10302 Optimus Prime. Loved the concept, loved the Robot build but the truck is really gappy and the it's far too fragile a build for the transformation process.
Most anticipated set of 2023: Whatever next years UCS set is as I'm hoping it's more like the Landspeeder in being something new but without it costing a months mortgage payment.
