    A blue Technics go-kart from perhaps 1978 or so? I still have all the pieces but no instructions - I have been meaning to track it down so I can rebuild it. It was a great vehicle!
    That would be 854 - a great little fun vehicle and one of my first Technic sets at around the same time. Still have it, still love it!

    mine is set nr 7830-1: Creator Bucket.I don't remember nothing of it,but I was a year old when I got it!But I think I started playng when I was 2 years old.I totaly ignored lego's choching hazard warning!

    My first Lego set was "Building Set with People" #195 (=non US 250). The main model was an airplane with a person. I have the beaten up instructions still with me.

    I was about 5 or 6 years old when I got it. After that, my parents encouraged me to be creative and bought me Legos instead of action figures that were popular at the time. Thanks to them, they got me an entire Lego Town dating back to 1980 or so. Of course, I dunno what's happened to them after that. Bummer...... :/

    This was my first Lego SET! I actually bought this MINT IN BOX a couple of years back and it is still sealed I can remember it was the first Lego Set I ever owned and in love with LEGO ever since!!

    My father worked in the ocean freight industry when I was growing up, and from one of his business trips he brought back my first LEGO set, the Maersk 1552. As a kid, of course I had no idea how rare or special that set was at the time. It was built and went through all the play and wear a LEGO set would with a 6 year old kid. A few years later when we moved, it just got lost in the shuffle....just like many of the other stories here, I guess...

    I was in the first grade when a friend showed me his new Lego set (it was 6842). I told my brother about it and we begged my mom to take us to the toy store to get Lego. She let us each choose a set.

    My choice was 6600.

    well, i inherited a few mid-70s sets from somewhere before I was old enough to remember. I don't technically remember receiving this, but I'm quite certain that 590 - engine company #9 (http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=590-1) was the set bought for/given to me. I still have the tattered, ripped, and well-worn instructions (most of them anyway), and I'm sure 90%+ of the (well-used) pieces are still in my bin of childhood LEGO, which I keep separate from my recent collection of post-dark ages LEGO. After the 590, most of my childhood LEGO was classic space, with the 483 Alpha 1 Rocket base and the 6970 Beta 1 Command base being the two earlier (major) sets. I also dabbled here and there in town stuff, but space was the main attraction.

    I also have 195 Building Set with People, mentioned earlier. Although I would say that my first may have been 565 Moon Landing. Many of you are making me feel old.

    ^ Wasn't your first set that battlepack from the Marathon Man license? Unfortunately, it only came with three Minifigures but you did get a cool chair.

    Funny thing... I just came across my oldest known LEGO element from my collection... so you all can stop feeling old...

    It is a gray 10x20 baseplate from a 700/1 set I got at Christmas 1960 (mentioned earlier in this thread)... and it has no LEGO logo on the studs... only once on the underside in what is known as the "dogbone" font (LEGO in italics with what looks like a dumbbell going thru it).

    The first sets I bought myself would be the 600s in 1978. I was 10 & I remember begging my mum for an extra 10p in my pocket-money. Then I could afford one a week!
    It's only now that I realise what a great period this was in lego. I even had http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=853-1 for Christmas.

    I know I had a fair bit of Duplo as a child. It seemed to just be a mixture of bricks, 2705 passanger train with a fair bit of track, 2644 Service station and a few other cars. There also seemed to be a few crane pieces mixed in as well. Most of it is still around and my 2 1/2 year old nephew is currently getting enjoyment from whats left.

    The first Lego set I got was the 6361 Mobile Crane. It really kicked off my love of Lego.

    The one I remember first was: http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=775-1. I loved this set. You could play with it in the water. The rotating water cannons were really cool. You could also make a short boat if you pulled out the middle section of the hull.

    6699 Cycle Fit-it Shop. I was 2. I don't know what my parents were thinking, giving a 2 year old Legos, but I'd like to think it made be a better person.

    My first set was the buckhoe. I still have most of it except for the back bucket. So if anyone has one please pm me.
    Also remember haiting the fact that I could not get the bucket to swing like a real digger. Always wanted to drive on when I was little...oh the easy life.

    I never had Legos as a child :( I was into Star Wars figs, toy cars and mud pies lol. I lived out in the country so I played with boy toys. I was a tomboy and an only child so I never played with "girly" toys

    Motor Speedway: I think this was the first proper LEGO set I got, for Christmas. However, since I was really young when I got my first set (well below the recommended age range) I don't really remember getting it at all.

    Guys, have you noticed one thing about these classic City sets. LEGO is not making anything like these nowadays and they so can. With the new bricks and so much advancement. No wonder I still cherish my old City and Space collection :)

    6399, bough as an accessory on a train layout, but a few years later we sold all three of them to someone I worked with. In 2009 we came out of our dark ages and tried to find this person so we could offer to buy them back but couldn't find him.

    Our first set coming out o our dark ages was 7897, 7898, and extra track. We still love trains!

    I tried finding my first set online, but I couldn't get any pictures. it was a big Freestyle set with a shallow, wide red bin, assorted pieces, one minifig, and two light green baseplates. Ah, memories ...
