I was about 5 or 6 years old when I got it. After that, my parents encouraged me to be creative and bought me Legos instead of action figures that were popular at the time. Thanks to them, they got me an entire Lego Town dating back to 1980 or so. Of course, I dunno what's happened to them after that. Bummer...... :/
My choice was 6600.
My brother chose 6602.

I've gone back and added pics to the previous posts. :o)
Also remember haiting the fact that I could not get the bucket to swing like a real digger. Always wanted to drive on when I was little...oh the easy life.
I still have it.
I only wish I still had it.
I thought my first set was 6506 - Precinct Cruiser but my parents say they started with a big house for me and my sister :)
Followed by several other space sets (though I cannot recall in which order)...
Beta-1 Command Base
Our first set coming out o our dark ages was 7897, 7898, and extra track. We still love trains!
And my first SYSTEM set was:
