Absolutely loving this: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/1768# Think it deserves some support!

Anyone else notice the run the EVE project had last week, over 2,000 new supporters: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/11619. I think this may beat the Back to the Future project to 10,000 votes: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/96.

Finally, gotta mention Peter Reid's Exo Suit: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/6135. He's in my LUG and is a very talented builder and his Exo Suit is nigh on perfection IMO so please throw a few votes his way if you agree.

Thanks for these Andy. I've been and added my vote to a couple of them.
    That Exo Suit is awesome!

I voted for the Exo Suit (http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/6135) a while back, fantastic build.

Sorry to say it, but that EVE thing is hideous! I know that these are supposed to be ideas that will get fleshed out later, but that just doesnt look good to me, but hey its clearly another set that is based upon a game with a cult following so will make the 10k even if very few of the voters have any intention of buying anything.

The Bladerunner set is nice, love all that blue, the designer has also created a great little batmobile: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/1759

  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
I fully agree on the EVE project, I was just commenting that it had gained a lot of support rather than professing my love for it.
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 3,940
What the heck is Eve? If Cuusoo is going to basically be a platform for licensed sets then they should at least be iconic or widely-known (eg BTTF, Blade Runner)!

It will be interesting to see the market response to the Mincraft stuff. TLG seem to have done a nice job on the design and packaging https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150675231288403&set=a.10150175674793403.303596.6665038402&type=1&theater

Still no word on the Winchester debacle... Do you think they are waiting to see how the minecraft project pans out?
  • DuchessaDuchessa Member Posts: 287
I don't like the EVE-ship either. I think it's bulky. But I do like the other two current front runners: the BTTF-car and the modular Western Town. Especially the last one mentioned :)
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
That exo suit is amazing. Would love to own a couple of them. However lego really need to clear out those lisence themes and start telling people to make their own stuff. While some of the models make fantastic looking mocs they really arent going to sell well or be relivent to anyone but afols. A good example is the fact that this evo ship (nope no idea either) is going to have more votes than the western modulars. It just seems stupid and why I still dislike custoo
  • andheandhe Member Posts: 3,940
Maybe the modular western project needs to be linked to a licence... Is True Grit too obscure? It was oscar nominated after all!

    Thanks for posting,

I didn't vote for any as I do believe that you should only vote if you indeed to buy the product, which is why ultimately why I think Cuusoo will be short lived, atleast in its current form (and soon) I think we will start to see lots of sets reach 10,000 votes a lot quicker, as popularity and awareness on the site grows, and thus not really a good indicator on what the public actually want.

Anyhow that's my little rant but it is cool to see the creativity in the sets you posted. Some really good builders out there to.

Lego actually made a one off Spinner that they presented to Syd Mead (the concept designer for Blade Runner) when he attended a design summit in Billund, it was more Technic scale in design, I'm not sure what year it was, I have attached a photo of it in his home office.
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
@andhe ah now im sure it will get ten thousand votes. Or link it to clint eastwood.

But i think thats the problem with custoo. No matter how good a build it is it wont get the votes unless its linked to some thing. And as @shannon69 says people will vote as its cool not because they will buy it or that its a good idea.
  • timinchicagotiminchicago Member Posts: 239
As a big fan of Bladerunner, I would certainly buy a nicely done Spinner, a Tyrell Corp building, or even a Voight-Kampff machine. Given that it is an R rated movie, I would hope that the set would be geared towards the older builder.
  • monkey_roomonkey_roo Member Posts: 1,411
^^ General agreement from me that being attached to a licence or 'fan base' is the key, but also if you look at the popular votes on the top ten we see 4 Si-Fi vehicles, 4 robot/solider type models, 1 fan based gaming idea and only 1 'original' MOC (the Western Theme). So from this I glean that not only does the idea need to be theme based but also very ‘classically male’ focused, not that I am against this, just pointing out what I think is a trend. Something that I think is backed up by the fact that I loaded up my Tinkerbell MOCs a few weeks ago and in all that time only 230 hits and 12 votes, which isn’t the worst ratio of hits to votes you will find up there, but it does tells me that no one is searching on the keywords I have used to describe the model as I don’t think it plays to the majority of cuusoo users, again merely an observation. Personally I have happily voted for several of the current top ten and some of the models mentioned above and will continue to vote for things I like, although I do try to base my votes on various factors such as playability and potential costs, not just cool nostalgic views.

To be honest I have had a look at cuusoo a number of times, but never searched for anything, so unless it is either in the top 10, or most commented or I am clicking a link from someone (as per the original post here), the rest of the models are totally off my radar. But I did vote for Tink (http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/13639), <- little plug for you monkey_roo - I think its worth it!
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
^+^^ I think a fairy series would be a nice compliment to the friends series and could be aimed at younger kids. Thats a good idea, not some of the I want a bucket of 500000 stormtroopers and a darth vader stuff on there.
  • monkey_roomonkey_roo Member Posts: 1,411
I agree, not that I think all of the themed ideas are bad, the fan boy in me loves the Firefly model and the Back to the Future set is great, but in a way these are/were not on Lego’s radar as models to make and sell so add something to the Lego universe. Whereas anything SW is and has, I am sure been looked at, and is under such tight licence restrictions anyway buckets just wouldn’t be made. I guess my Tink ideas fall in the same bracket as I am sure Lego and Disney will be looking at this licence anyway as it is Disney’s top selling ‘girls’ brand. Either way I guess I would like to see more of a broader range of ideas going up and not just yet another spaceship or robot or whatever.
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
Oh yeah like I said there are some great MOCs on there. That I would love to own or have a go at building. But thats the problem they are great mocs not actual toys. You have to do something that appeals to kids and AFOLs as well. Rather than something you would want to see as everyone is diffirent. No i dont think the buckets will ever be made (thank god). But if it was a fairy series then I think lego could get around it easily. Disney dont own faires.
  • monkey_roomonkey_roo Member Posts: 1,411
Good point, as a generic brand faires are fair game i guess so Lego could go it alone on that one, that said i doubt they will. Their creation of the freinds theme has been costly and time consuming, although very sucessful they may not want to take on another 'girl' based theme on their own so quickly when the licence is there to use the disney theme and that built in market - who knows.
  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
well you never know so fingers crossed
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
I think you pretty much need to promote the hell out of a project to get anywhere, and on mainstream sites not just Lego fan sites. You also have to do multiple waves of promotion to keep it going. I've started keeping a close eye on Cuusoo and it has become part of my morning website check ritual.

A couple of sites I'd try for promotion are Gizmodo and Engadget, I've seen Lego on there more times than I can remember and they have very broad and large audiences.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
What the heck is Eve? If Cuusoo is going to basically be a platform for licensed sets then they should at least be iconic or widely-known (eg BTTF, Blade Runner)!
Just because you don't know it doesn't mean it isn't widely known. Things like BTTF are main stream media so of course a lot of people are going to know it but in this case not as many people that know BTTF are exposed to LEGO and CUUSOO. People into games are going to know EVE even if they don't specifically play it and are also more along the line of people that would probably be into LEGO as well.

Do you know WoW? 10+ million people play it and it would be really easy to get 10k people to support a project. Hell I could probably pay people with in game gold to vote for something and get 10k votes. But since WoW isnt very "modular" or vehicle based it would be hard coming up with good sets.

  • RedbullgivesuwindRedbullgivesuwind Member Posts: 2,115
@Atkinsar that is very true you do need a large cross promotion so posting on other toy websites, mums groups, endgadget and others, all of these will push up votes and is a good thing to do, as you say. But that to me seems to be the flaw in that things people recognise or already have a large fan base will jump to the top, no matter what they would be like as a set or if they will sell. While the good sets those that have an "x factor" such as the wild west set and the blade runner set will not do as well because they are not as popular.

Now I get that lego have to make money and the best way to see if it will sell is to try and hit the 10,000 vote mark. If they all buy a set thats good business. However we already have those mass market sets such as star wars and ninjago which keep lego in profit. I think this would be better served as a kind of catering to the AFOLs site where good sets could be made in a limited number and sold like the modulars. And if such as Monkey-roo's idea or the evo suit you come across something that is both well that is even better.
  • doriansdaddoriansdad Member Posts: 1,337
I don't understand the entries that are based on licensed property such as the Delorean time machine. TLG does not own this license so there is no way they can produce this set regardless of how many votes it gets. Same with Blade Runner material. Maybe I am missing something or do fans think TLG will acquire a license to support a CUUSOO project (which sounds like an awful lot of wishful thinking to me)?

I'll admit, I need to refine the description and the direction of my project of American Football, but I am up to 58 supporters :) http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/1471

@Atkinsar I'm with you, I love checking out the different projects. One that has really caught my eye that would be sweet is the Legend of Zelda project.
  • monkey_roomonkey_roo Member Posts: 1,411
@doriansdad I believe that is exactly what Lego will do. Certainly Mincraft was a licence owned by another company, and I believe the image rights for the satellite produced in Japan was a licence issue, Lego are more than happy to approach companies to do a deal and to be fair, with all the movie related stuff and games to an extend it is win win for everyone. Something like BTTF may be long gone from the cinema but it sells well on DVD etc and a studio deal for a BTTF Lego will raise its profile again and possibly capture a new young audience for the films. Lego get their sales, the studio gets theirs. That said something like Bladerunner would be a hard sell, but Lego can make special sets for conventions and film festivals etc, so many options.

Isn't Blade Runner a bit adult for the younger kids?
    Thats what I always thought
  • BumblepantsBumblepants Member Posts: 7,624
@sherlockbones yeah it brings us back to the R/mature rated film issue that was much discussed over the Shaun of the Dead project.

@Sherlockbones & @Bumblepants - but look at the first two Cuusoo sets that went into production (Shinkai 6500 and Hayabusa), and even the Minecraft Micro World, which aren't really designs for younger kids. I think Cuusoo kind of started as a representation for AFOL works - not for kids sets or future "mainline" sets as some people have discussed. Personally I like how Cuusoo started, but once it opened up to the rest of the world, it became a bit of a mess. Just my opinion... ;oP

BTW, I like the Spinner.... maybe it's not Cuusoo material, but I'd like to see it happen.
  • BrickDancerBrickDancer Member Posts: 3,639
I actually prefer how diverse and varied the range of ideas are on the site. Some, like the Stormtrooper Bucket, are not necessary but still give an idea of what topics people are interested in i.e. army building. Others like Legend of Zelda show what type of Themes are viable and how the styling of accessories & pieces can be beautifully done in that meme. Some present solutions for MOC purposes, like a macaroni shaped 2x2 tile, that is needed for more SNOT capabilities.

Others seem to be inspiring Lego themselves to release similar sets, such as a Haunted House. So limiting or curtailing ideas because they don't fit current or existing marketing is short sighted. Maybe this will give rise to the next "Bionicle-like" novel theme, like seen in the upcoming Ninjago Samurai Mech. My favorite Cuusoo entry for this is the excellent Gundam model:

  • andheandhe Member Posts: 3,940
@graphite mega blocks already have a WoW licence so seem to be going for the branding over design approach similar to their Halo stuff.

To get decent sales I just think stuff is going to need a broader appeal and potential market than the same old computer-based fandom.
  • caperberrycaperberry Member Posts: 2,226
I'm still depressed about CUUSOO in its beta form, as the *general* sense I get from various AFOL forums is that there is no point bothering with it. I hope that changes with the alpha version. I think if the forums got behind it and maybe even teamed up, we could get 10k votes behind some projects.

I also hope CUUSOO lower the 10k threshold for the piece designs on there. We'd all buy packets of cool new pieces, right? Or would we wait until they were cheaper on BrickLink :o(
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
Im guessing the risk on tlg's side for new pieces is far higher than new sets using existing pieces due to the cost of new moulds etc.

Also the alpha stage comes before not after the beta stage.
  • cheshirecatcheshirecat Member Posts: 5,331
Oh and also the forums did all get behind a model (the western modular) and it didnt work as well as expected.

^Nice find on the Technic Bugatti, very detailed.

    Here's a non-Technic one to pair with as a mini-version:

  • vonlanivonlani Member Posts: 21
    edited April 2012
the non-technic one is also nice, just the roof looks somehow "flat"... although i saw a real one once in munich and barely noticed it, because the whole car is just so flat;-)

for the technic one, there are probably too much pf included, tlg would charge a fortune for that model.
  • dmg111dmg111 Member Posts: 40
I supported the EVE ship because I play the game and would probably buy LEGO ships. I don't necessarily like the model itself. There are also ships in the game that would make for better models - I don't particularly like the way the Rifter looks in game, either.

I really like the UCS Sand Crawler on CUUSOO. I want that one to be reality. That, and the western modular town.
  • timinchicagotiminchicago Member Posts: 239
^Yes the UCS Sand Crawler is amazing, far more detailed than the original 10144.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
^ and completely impractical as a production set, unfortunately.
  • timinchicagotiminchicago Member Posts: 239
^ Alas most likely true. However the concept for a highly detailed Sandcrawler has merit. I am not sure how the whole CUUSOO process works, who's to say what type of modification they could create once it reached the required threshold of support. I for one would be satisfied with a Sandcrawler that was somewhere between this UCS CUUSOO model and 10144.
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
heck, 10144 released today with the same ~1650 pieces and updated minifigs would already be a $200 set. How much higher would you want the price to go? Hard to see LEGO taking it past the ~$250 range, which doesn't leave a lot of budget to add very much to it.
  • graphitegraphite Member Posts: 3,275
Other than the structural strength of 10144 I don't think it is that bad of a model. It doesn't fully represent the Sandcrawler accurately in all detail but it isn't like 10144 looks like the 7151 Sith Infiltrator.
  • madforLEGOmadforLEGO Member Posts: 10,787

and I think this is why it will be a hard sell, LEGO is usually for Children, at least that is their main market.

  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
As predicted, in just a few minutes the EVE project will be the next CUUSOO idea to reach the review stage.
  • atkinsaratkinsar Member Posts: 4,258
    ...and done!
  • dougtsdougts Member Posts: 4,110
^ another one I'm curious to see the outcome on (and still waiting on Shaun...).

LEGO is kind of putting themselves in between a rock and a hard place on this one. The publicity and views and traffic are great - but how many of those people voting for something are going to buy it, especially when many (most?) of those people probably don't buy LEGO currently. More importantly, how many of them will buy OTHER LEGO sets later?

Then you have the licensing issues, along with content/values, etc. It gets a bit messy for LEGO. I think the best/only way to dig themselves out is to modify the TOS to simply just exclude third party IPs to begin with.

I decided to collect together some of my favourites on my latest blog posting; I'd particularly love Legoloverman's Exo Suit and Cavegod's AT-AT to get to the production stage, so if you like what you see then vote !

    http://gimmelego.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/dreams-can-come-true_25.html

Clearly great minds think alike as a couple of my picks have been mentioned by others on this thread....
