Help Me Decide What To Buy

OldfanOldfan Member Posts: 706
If you had the chance to buy 2-3 of the following sets on my wanted list, which ones would you prioritize and why?  This could be an interesting discussion, and it will help me with my future purchasing decisions as well. (If it's not on the list, it's either a small/polybag set or I already have it...) Thanks!

#1547 Black Knights Boat
#1680 Crusaders Cart
#4818 Dragon Rider
#6011 Black Knight's Treasure
#6021 Jousting Knights
#6022 Horse Cart
#6040 Blacksmith Shop
#6046 Hemlock Stronghold
#6049 Viking Voyager
#6055 Prisoner Convoy
#6066 Camouflaged Outpost
#6073 Knight's Castle
#6077 Forestmen's River Fortress
#6079 Dark Forest Fortress

Well duh... the Pirates sets of course!
Rock Island Refuge is a fantastic set, arguably the best of all of the Pirate islands (though I personally have some biases towards #6270). I also like Pirates Ambush quite a bit. #6281 and #6250 are absolutely ridiculously overpriced in the secondary market, so it is really, really hard to recommend them except to the completion-ist collector.

Outside of Pirates #6066 Camouflaged Outpost is one of my all-time favorite sets from my childhood. It probably got more play than just about any other set I owned.

I'm a big fan of the Royal Knight's Castle.

(The Black Monarch's Castle and Forestmen River Fortress are my favorites, but they're not options.  Or, maybe it is?  Silly LEGO numbering system.)

Disclaimer: I have a strong bias for the 1984-1989 Castle stuff, and don't have much interest in the stuff that came after. I'd go with Camouflaged Outpost, Forestmen's River Fortress, and Prisoner Convoy. If I didn't already have any Black Falcons, I'd go with Knight's Castle over one of the Forestmen sets.

For me, it would depend on the prices they were selling for. There is a range of set sizes and values, and I would normally have a fixed price budget rather than number of sets being fixed. But if the number of sets is fixed, I'd go for the ones with most minifigs and unique or hard to find parts, as the common old parts are typically cheap.

#1680 is probably only for the connoisseur if you want it with its instructions, and certainly its box. I bought one with a box for noticeably less than it would likely sell on again for to the right audience, but I think I was just lucky and was one of the only people to spot it in an auction house listing. It might be even harder to get over in the USA as it seemed to only originally be available over here.

Having said that though, you could quite easily construct a #1680 using other parts and Forestmen mini figures if you wanted with no instructions or box, as none of the parts themselves are massively unique or expensive.

I’ve always been interested in Dark Forest sets but haven’t bought any yet. I think they were US exclusive at the time so they don’t turn up that often over here.

I've heard that Blacksmith Shop has unique parts but I can't remember where I saw this information...does anyone know offhand which sets on this list might apply?

Blacksmith Shop #6040 doesn’t have any obvious rare parts that I’m aware of. Probably just the actual blacksmith minifigure is rarer.

Thanks everyone. I'm going for Camouflaged Outpost first, should be a great set!

Several on you list are terrible sets and I would't spend a lot of money on.  #6250 is the worst Pirate ship and #6281 is rather uninteresting.  #6091 looks like it should be a better set than it is, very disappointed by it.  And #6087 maybe the worst set ever, certainly the worst Castle set.

#6066 is a good one, but I would have recommend #6077 first.  #6090 and #6079 are both solid Castle sets.  #6273 is the best Pirate set on your list and a great Pirate island set over all.
