Curious....seems there's several Minnesota people who pop up in this thread. Wondering if any of you were lucky enough to get the lot that was being sold in Buffalo last week - several 80's castle sets, 80's Pirates including 6285. Also had a lot of non-LEGO stuff, were selling all or none, $8/lb. Was sold before I could nail down a time...

In that case, let’s say the universe paid me $4.50 an hour to sort the set out of the rest of the collection.

    Congrats WesterBricks!

One of my best finds on Facebook was a similar scenario where I saw a single part poking out of all the bricks that grabbed my attention. I nabbed the bin for $80, sorted out the UCS X-Wing, Brick Linked the 30 or so missing parts, and resold the bin for $100. A "free" USC set in hand.

This is a very small great find by comparison with most things in this thread, but I was pretty happy to find one of the trans yellow windscreens from the TLBM Batmobile 70905 ("The Speedwagon") at Bricks and Minifigs on Monday.  Modern trans yellow windscreens from TLM, TLBM, and TLM2 for Classic Space builds are rare and expensive on Bricklink by now.

Been sorting through a box of Classic Space sets from FB Marketplace ($75). From what I've found, missing less than 60 pieces in total for 20 sets. Several smaller ones, but some larger ones, too - #6930, #6971, #6891, #6941, #6954, #6985, and #6926
Following up because it's pretty exciting....$80ish in Bricklink orders (due to a couple rare pieces) and everything has ended up selling to roughly make up for the $525 UCS Falcon I found. All in all not too shabby....

    I didnt see it.

Is it possible to enter a 2nd Dark Age? Building these sets just seem to suck up my day now- I feel like I need a different hobby that gives a bigger payoff vs. time invested ratio.

^ Isn't that what makes it a hobby and not a career?  The time/cost/benefit ratio can suck, but it's supposed to bring you joy.

^^^ Sounds precisely why I try to avoid most reselling at all when it comes to LEGO. Dealing with all of that hassel just saps the joy out of the hobby for me. Reselling is a necessary evil at times especially when one buys multiple copies of a used set to complete one (guilty as charged) but I do try to keep my enjoyment of the hobby as free from those headaches as possible.

I suffered a summer-long deep depression 5 yrs ago & Lego was one of the 1st hobbies/activities that helped me bounce back, so I don't feel right "abandoning" it, but I'm just not getting the joy I used to from it; havent set foot in my Lego Lab for weeks but not really feeling that much of a loss. Time.to move on? Technic sets still sorta hold interest for me

If you want to take a break, pack it up and store it, but don’t get rid of it too quickly. That’s my advice. Then again, I’m just a random internet stranger.

For me, sometimes I have to take a step away from a hobby for a week or a month or sometimes even a year or two.  But for most of my hobbies, that doesn't mean I'm done with them, it just means I need a break.  If you're really not sure, just leave it alone for a bit and don't feel guilty about it.  If it's been awhile, and you're still not feeling it, then pack it up and store it away.  Then, if you need the space/money/you're still not feeling it after a little more, that's when I would start really cutting down and selling stuff off.

(This isn't to say that you shouldn't just pare down what you have if you want to also.  Sometimes cutting your collection to get rid of 'clutter' can both help to take away some of the stress off having and taking care of a collection, and also help to reconnect you with what you enjoyed about the hobby in the first place.)

After I came out of my first Dark Age, I went crazy and was buying A LOT of sets that were outside of my usual type...because I really wanted more and more.  Eventually, I sold a lot of those off because they didn't do anything for me, but kept the ones I liked (mostly space and town).
  • gelkstergelkster Member Posts: 927
Save for my expansive Technic sets, right now if anything I'm focused on curating our general collectiom for my 2 teenage sons. I have most sets packed away (but accessible) & a list saying who gets what when I die. They can swap with each other or sell them.off, it's their call once I'm gone.

Currently one.son grabs miniiigs from the stockpkle & carried them around with him but usually leaves them laying around. I think this is the 1st Christmas he hasn't asked for/doesn't want Lego in some form or other.

The other son has Lego from his younger days but hasn't been even slightly interested for years-- since he discovered online gaming- & even now probably.wouldnt care if I sold his sets, though my wife forbids it.

I usually kinda fluctuate between Lego & my arcade game collection, & even though the video game "pull" isn't so.strong ths time, I don't feel the Lego collection calling back for me.

I turned 50 this fall, I know age doesnt matter around here but I think that's also part of what's going on-- not worried that I'm running out of free time, but I need to make what time.I DO have, matter more.

So according to my list mentioned above, we have at least 300 sets stored away, with several sets & loose parts mixed into the general collection. I'm going to let them separate those when they're older.

I'm 48 and my father passed away at 75 in the spring...so I totally get it.  My son is just 3, so when he's allowed to go into the basement in a couple years and see the city I'm building for him, his mind will be blown...and we'll hopefully be having some great times down there together.

Randomly decided to pop into Walmart on my way home from work and found #75315 in the clearance aisle for $89.99.  The box was beat to hell and the tape had been broken.  I asked to check its contents before purchase, and was able to confirm it was all there.  Yay!

How do you confirm that without knowing how many bags of each number there are supposed to be?

Lately, they seem to be just one bag per number, with smaller bags inside.

Short version, it took some deduction.   Long version ... I asked if I could check the contents, and got permission to open the instruction booklet -- saw there were 9 bags, and which minifigs came from which bags.  I assumed, if any bags would be missing it would be the ones containing minifgs.  So I first checked to make sure I had bags numbered 1-9.  Second, I confirmed all the present bags were sealed.  Third, knowing all the bags in the box were still sealed, I checked the specific bags that had minifigs, and confirmed all the minifigs were there.  Finally, I then looked at the remaining bags (already knowing they were still sealed) and compared them with the steps in the instructions and could determine all the bags were present.

Picked this lot up the other day, a £10 bag on FB marketplace. Had the Millennium Falcon windscreen at the top, but turned out to be one of those weird bags that just has fractions of sets. Good selection of figs though!

I came across this listing on Mercari (picture from listing) a little over a week ago for $40. The description was poorly written and a bit vague as to the actual completeness of the sets in the boxes shown, and this was the only photo provided, but I decided to take the gamble and buy the lot in the hopes that there was something more than just empty boxes with the bit of bulk seen in the middle.

On arrival I found a mixture of good and bad news, but overall I did certainly come out ahead. The #6279 Skull Island set was mostly present (90%+ I'd guess) in the box (which was also in really good condition). Unfortunately however the #6250 Crossbone Clipper box was completely empty except instructions. The #6079 Dark Forest Fortress box had a number of pieces (maybe 25% total, sadly no baseplate) to the set and the instructions but nicest of all it had a couple of the minifigures, including plumes (and two new-on-sprue plumes for both red and blue), Forestmen shields, and quite a few of the old brown corner panel pieces. The other two boxes were both mostly empty. The two boxes of bulk contained quite a bit of pieces for the UFO ship as well as Aquazone parts and pieces including about 10 minfigures.

So, while not the deal of the century that I was hoping for, I definitely ended up on the positive end of the bargain for this one.

Follow up... I inventoried Skull Island last night and it was indeed virtually complete. About 5 pieces missing, plus the two animals and a few weapons. So that alone is pretty much a $150 set.
Still feeling sad that none of the Clipper was there though.

I found #60288 in a local resale shop, brand new for $12 (MSRP was $20).
A small brag compared to my other recent finds, but it scratched one set off of my wanted list, and honestly, sometimes it feels really good to quickly assemble a small set.

I scooped up a small vintage lot on eBay this weekend for $45. Along with a large pile of non Lego, I now have most of:
#4565 Freight and Crane Railway (1996)
    #9748 Droid Developer Kit (1999)
    #6919 Planetary Prowler (1998)

All of the electrics work, and a couple of the crane parts are still in a sealed bag. No minifigures or speed controller, but that’s not a big deal for me.

The seller said it was an estate find, and everything is in very good condition. It feels like maybe some grandparents had this collection at their house for when the grandkids came to visit.

^ #6919 Planetary Prowler is one of my favorite Space sets! It looks like a cricket- it really should have had one of the Insectoid light & sound parts. Hmm... I guess I know what to build this evening!

Update on the Freight and Crane Railway - somehow I had a yellow tipper and six old solid-axle wheelsets in my collection, plus most of the missing common parts, so I only need $10 in parts and minifigures to complete a classic 9V Train set, stickers aside.

This "Lego Mixed 1 Pound Lot of Race cars" ($25 with free shipping on eBay) appears to be most of #10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van.  I'm pretty sure part of the nose is missing, but it looks to be most of the rest, plus a few random 80s/90s minifigures for some reason. It will be fun to sort out and reassemble when it arrives.

Staying away for work tonight, so popped into the local Morrisons to grab a drink and snacks for the evening. Lego section was empty apart from a lone, very battered 60285, marked as £5 down from £10, got to the till and the cashier looked at the state of the box crushed and ripped open and knocked £2 off "it's probably missing pieces"
Sets complete, not bad hotel room build for £3

Not too much of a brag, but did find set #75941 at my local Walmart.  The shelves have been pretty much bare for the last month and I was surprised to find this set.  I found it weird that it was listed as Walmart Rollback price of $85  Only one set left, so maybe there were more available.  Anyways, I’m happy I got one.

^ Some sets that haven't been around for a bit can pop up at this time of year.  I think they are items that were received or purchased as Christmas presents and ended getting returned for some reason.  Not so much Walmart, but I recall finding out of production LEGO at TRU that had obviously been a returned gift as it still had a bit of tape with wrapping paper stuck to the side of it!

TRU in the US used to be well known for having old sets around long after retirement.
