Yeah that will probably happen. The Elves usually take over whatever they make.

I'm a low-paid grad student, but I'm single and the cost of living out on Pluto is low enough that I can afford to buy Lego sets.  However, I usually buy sets because I want the A model, not because I want to part them out for creative building, and I can't afford to buy parts separately to realize all the MOCs I build in Studio.

I'm now in my sixth year of grad school and the end is nowhere in sight, so I decided to go ahead and buy a bunch of bulk from Bricks & Minifigs to build the group of Classic Space remakes that I started designing in Studio in my first year of grad school (6931 + 928 + 926 + 924 + 918v1 + 918v2).  It's not like waiting a few more years will make it any more affordable.  So $260 worth of bulk got everything nicely built except with the wrong colors for the windscreens and the rocket engines and with a few more special parts missing and without the Classic Space minifigs.  On Bricklink the lowest total I could come up with to supply those missing parts was ... $430! That's why I've been afraid of Bricklink and physical, as opposed to digital, MOCcing all this time!  That'll be nearly $700 spent on this group of physical MOCs that would retail for maybe up to $230 in total if they were real sets.  I definitely should have bought the parts back in 2017 and 2019 when TLBM and TLM2 were new, before everyone else bought up the trans-yellow windscreens and the light bluish gray cones and the Benny Space Squad minifigures and drove up the prices of the few remaining ones on the market. So I went ahead and placed the orders out of a desire to actually finish something after five and a half years of grad school, even if it's just a silly Lego creation.

I recognize that I'm lucky to be able to do this, since so many grad students are much less comfortable financially (especially if they have kids), but - wow, how do you MOC builders do it?  Is it just that you're so much better at parting out your sets for creative building instead of wanting to have your cake and eat it too, or are you really savvy at getting cheap bulk through yard sales etc and you mostly work from the bulk, or what are the secrets of Bricks & Pieces or Bricklink?  Or are you all just much more highly paid than I am with an equally low cost of living?

    ^ iwybs.
From what I have seen here at brickset there are a multitude of AFOL people.
Some are rich enough to pay for any lego they want.
Some just collect enough lego over time, to gather what they need from their collections.
Some can find great bargains at yard sales.
Some have lego "pushers" who can find what they need.... :)
Some are just very determined to get the parts they need from any number of sources....

To you all, I say thank you for your creations.

    Keep on Moc'ing.

Why not use a normal minifig head and just add a beard? The one Lego use for Doomsday (#sh359) represents a beard without a tache.

Had a lot of LEGO fun over the weekend! Saturday night my local Bricks & Minifigs (the large flagship store) hosted a Bulk Brick Bash where they put out well over 100 pounds of fresh unsorted bulk including lots of premium pieces. You were given a gallon bucket to fill (and could purchase additional buckets if you so chose). There were a ton of great pieces, especially classic stuff that I was looking for. I really stocked up on the old brown and old grays. It was a ton of fun and I absolutely feel like I got my money's worth in parts!
Then, Sunday morning was AFOL appreciation at the LEGO Store where I picked up #21329 Fender Stratocaster along with a small PAB cup, another set of BAM parts, and a couple of other small sets.

In other news, for just about the first time ever, I have a true backlog of sets I actually intend on building and displaying. I'm well stocked up for the winter months of indoor warm & cozy building. In addition to the Fender, I have R2-D2, the Pickup Truck, and The Guardians' Ship all to build still. Between my focus on the older sets lately (namely Pirates), lack of build time, and lack of display space, I've managed to get a little stockpile going.

My store sent an e-mail around midday on Saturday but I chose to pass since I was planning to hit up AFOL day yesterday.  I don't know if my local Bricks & Minifigs does the fill a bucket deal.  Usually I usually don't get the e-mails from them until about an hour before the store closes for the day so I've never gotten to participate in their deals.  I  was able to visit both Denver area Lego stores yesterday.  The one store opened @ 8AM and had out a bunch of random parts from broken down sets again for us to pick through for the PAB cups.  I didn’t find as much as last time but filled about 1 & 1/4 large cups.  Filled up the rest of the second cup with some random PAB wall stuff but there really wasn't anything new.  Got the HP icons set with the 2 GWP's, Anniversary Disney Castle, Christmas ornament set, a set of the Roses and 2 BAM packs mainly for the pigs.  At the other store I got the Fluffy set & Wizard pack to get another Hermione polybag GWP,  a Christmas wreath mainly for the parts, another set of Roses and a BAM pack.  Neither store had the printed legs for the Mariachi BAM.

Browsing Target, reminded that it's ironic for nonurban things to be branded CITY, especially the farm set #60287 Tractor but also modern space sets like #60226 and nature exploration/adventure type sets like #60300
CREATOR is also used as a catchall but at least doesn't directly contradict the model's subject matter.

It's a little thing but I prefer the Nasa and Nat Geo ocean explorers of the last couple of years had their own theme instead of being lumped in with City. They used to. There was a Divers theme and a Space theme back at the turn of the century. It's not really City though is it? But then I seem to remember Town had a space shuttle and launchpad.

Might be a bit early but thought I’d get the Christmas wreath out and build it, since I remember it was a bit of a faff. Opened the box and my genius self decided not to dismantle it last Christmas, although some leaves fell off so I took all the greenery off and rebuilt those bits.

I dismantled all of the Islander sets... sad face.

But, they will be built again! I just need to figure out where in the world I'm going to actually display them. At the very least I'll re-built them for my convention display.

Pulled the trigger on the titanic today, and forgot to redeem my VIP voucher for 150.- I had just cashed in points for five minutes earlier. Then I see the leaks for the AT-AT and all is good again - just have to remember to use the voucher in a months time!

^^That is a milestone. Well done.

But then at about 1.25 million bricks you begin to wonder what the hell you have done ..... and begin to think about selling your collection...... or buying a much bigger house.  :)

So, over the last couple of weeks I've taken advantage of a number of sales on LEGO and things like double VIP points to make some rather large purchases.  I have been slowly inching closer and closer to a major LEGO milestone for awhile now, but after I took the time today to open and catalog all my recent purchases, I synced my sets with Rebrickable, and found that I had actually just broken (more like shattered, I guess :P) the milestone in question.

So, without beating around the bush any more:

Wow. I've only got ~196k parts! >1MM must take up a LOT of storage space!!

Those sets look great- I’m jealous!  I gave up on ever getting the actual sets, but a couple of years ago I cobbled together a reasonable copy of #41491 from parts and stickers I had on hand (plus a couple of BL orders)…

I definitely had been weighing on if I would ever be able to get the sets, and if the stars hadn't aligned and Fireheart hadn't posted his sets at basically this exact couple of weeks, there's a good chance that I wouldn't have ever been able to get the actual sets either. If it had gone another year or two, I probably would have ended up Bricklinking them as well.

EDIT: Forgot to say, looks like you did a pretty good job of pulling a reasonable facsimile together! :)

After buying, a few at a time, 26 Vidiyo Bandmates, I finally got the one I most wanted- the Shark Singer! (still missing Discowboy). I have the Punk Pirate Beatbox. So the Punk Pirate Ship is probably inevitable. :)

Wow, two status updates in two days!  @Fireheart was instrumental in my completion of what I consider to be the set of attainable BrickHeadz, as I was able to get the remaining Comic Con sets I needed from him.  Thanks Fireheart!

(Technically I'm still missing two sets to completely finish the set, #40316 Geoffry which was never released, and Nonnie from the 2017 Inside Tour...  Neither of which I think I have any chance of acquiring ever, sadly :(  But oh well, I'm pretty happy having the complete set other than those two!)
You could build your own Geoffrey. The instructions were available online.

There's a good chance I will be giving (loaning?) my 1989 Batmobile to my brother soon, so my status today is: shuffling display space around so it is a little more prominent for the next week or two before I go through the painful disassembly process.

Thankfully, my Mos Eisley Cantina just barely fit in the cabinet where the Batmobile was. I'm really grateful for the hinge setup they designed that set around!

Also, a random question maybe someone can answer: Are there any fan sites or blogs that have pictures with a variety of modular building arrangements? It'd be really fun to see how different pairings work next to each other without having to rearrange my own!
  • autolycusautolycus Member Posts: 1,427
Another short status update: just inventoried a used Forestmen's Hideout (#6054) that I bought not too long ago. 4 pieces missing. Thankfully it's really really basic stuff in black that is available from PAB. Not worth Bricklinking them, considering it's <$0.40 worth.

There were also 3 extra 1x3 plates. Whoever built it last probably just misread the instructions and used some wrong pieces in a couple spots. It happens much more easily with those old instructions that don't have the pieces listed for each step.
