Winter train 10254 help to make motorised

Anyone tell me exactly what I need to motorise the winter train 10264.

On the instructions it says to get 8884, 88000, 88002 and 8879. I know these are retired but I’m not sure which to get. I’m not sure which is which.

I’m not bothered about the remote as I think you can use an iPhone to control, even then as long as it switched on maybe enough.

I’ve also seen/read somewhere that someone bought the city train and used it’s motor bits from the box. Is this possible?

it’s confusing to look on eBay as I’m. It sure which I need.

Also which train tracks do I need as I’d like to extend a bit.

Thanks

Putting a "#" in front of the set numbers will link to the entries in the BrickSet DB:

    #8884 - IR Receiver
    #88000 - AAA Battery Box
    #88002 - Train Motor
#8879 - IR Speed Remote Control

You will need all of these items to motorise the train and an iPhone will not work in place of the Remote Control for these Power Functions parts.

You may be able to substitute "Powered Up" components, which do allow Smartphone control, but they are not likely to be a 1-for-1 replacement, due to size differences etc.

    https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Powered-Up

You can buy one of the train sets that contain the Power Functions motors etc.

    https://brickset.com/sets/containing-part-4584375

Finally, for train tracks, you can use any of the following, plus any track contained within current train sets:

    #60205 Tracks
    #60238 Switch Tracks

Sorry, I ran out of time to edit and add some additional information:

All of the most recent train sets use the new "Powered Up" motors and not "Power Functions". Again, you should be able to use these, but it won't be a straight 1-for-1 swap.

    Thanks, tracks in my basket!

So just seen on YouTube someone used the train #60197 to power up #10254, getting the power, extra track as well (which I presume is compatible). Also he used iPhone to control.

So is there a difference in the powered functions? I’d rather just use iPhone to control, is this the newer version?

The #60197 is around £100 and so that’s motor functions and extra track maybe worth doing it this way?

Looking on eBay for all the links you sent is around £50?

     Thanks

Yes, I'm sure #60197's Powered Up parts will work, just not exactly the same way as the older Power Functions items. For one, you won't need to remove parts to fit the #8884 IR Receiver, which is a good thing.

Yes, Powered Up is the newer system. I don't have any experience with it, so can't make any claims about its suitability for what you want it to do but, as you say, there are people who have done, so I am sure it's entirely possible with a little work.

    Anyone had any experience please?

It seems the (newer) powered up is Bluetooth so this is why can use iPhone and app.

As you say looking on that YT video he had to mod a little bit, as battery box is bit bigger.

It seems only need the battery box and motor to make it work.

Not sure which way to go now…..

I did mod the #10254 with #60197's parts.

It's very much possible, but you may want to add the motor to a extra carriage, one which contains both the motor and the batterybox - because due to too little weight in the locomotive. When just putting the motor in the loc (and the battery box in the tender), the motor (which will be at the front of the loc) has little grip. If you put them both in an extra wagon, the grip is better (like in #60197 and #60198) due to the weight of the battery box being over the driven wheels.

However, if you go to fast (and that's pretty quickly in my experience), the "pushing" carriage often derails the locomotive... If you find an optimal solution, please let me know!

Thanks didn’t think about that. What do you do?

Do you think it’s best I just get the original power function set instead then?

This is just so I can put around my Xmas tree this year.

Could you not add a weight to the Loco as the IR receiver won’t be in there to help stabilise, or would it then be too heavy?

I used the original power functions train motor (mentioned above) and just a battery box. As @eMJeeNL said though, without any speed control it will go too fast and derail. My solve was to build two additional passenger cars to add extra weight to slow it down.

With the new Powered Up, the train motor JudgeChuck listed isn't available any more (on Lego.com) but they do have #88011 but that doesn't come with the wheels as far as I can see. The other problem is the battery box #88000 is also retired on the website so you'd have to go with the "hub" #88009 but that is $50. Not sure how that is controlled though, if you just need those two and connect with your phone or if you'd need the remote too (#88010). Someone who knows more about Powered Up might be more help.

So lots on eBay for the original power functions. They have sets of what the #10254 actually needs but it’s around £60.

Whereas the #60197 train with newer powered up is around £100, and this used an app which I think is more convenient, and also would get extra track.

I’d like to hear from anyone else who has used the newer powered up for the #10254 please, and if everything works well and fits ok.

    Thanks

I use powered up to run  my winter train. I modded the tender to hold all the components. it runs fine as long as you don't go too fast when the batteries are new. I think a few other here have done the same. if you search the winter village threads you can prob find some examples.

^Not too many examples of builds using the newer Powered Up option in the WV threads, but several modifications of the tender to have all of the motors/receivers.

I know I took a lot of inspiration from other's modifications of the train to motorize it (old or new systems). So, definitely worth a look!

Is this the same powered up as in Lego city train #60197? Did you buy it separate or from another set? Which if so?

Could you post some details and/or pics to show me please? Was it easy?

In this video https://youtu.be/9WVruryaM0A he puts the motor on the train and battery box in the tender. Not sure which is better?

I’m not bothered about speed, as it’s for a decoration to just go around the Xmas tree that’s all on a simple track (maybe expand from original tracks with ones from #60197 if get)

So with you doing it do you think it’s better to just get say City train to use that and extra track, as the powers up on own is quite expensive.

    Thanks

Justin like at Disney train #71044 and it has included powered up and the battery box and motor goes on tender.

Although the region looks bigger do more stable?

all my winter village stuff is packed up for a move so I can't take a pic. I did buy #60197 and use the components and track. Modding the tender was pretty straight forward if you have the right parts. I did order some additional panels to make it all match. it just needs to be a little bigger to conceal the battery box. I think you can even use it as designed, but the box will show which may or may not matter to you.
