Sets you never knew you had

I seem to have most of the pieces for #6270 Forbidden Island. Now i know i have never owned it and my kids have never received it as a gift, so where did it come from. Anyone else find out that they have a set they never knew they had?

Not a chance! I'm far too organised and use Brickset's database to track absolutely everything I acquire, on the day that I acquire it! ;-)

In fact, when I purchase a set which will be delivered, I mark it as both "Owned" and "Wanted" until it arrives and then I remove the "Wanted" label!

    :-)

I have forgotten I had certain sets, if that counts. I forgot I bought a #6543 Marina in box

Does this mean you never built it? For shame! It's a fantastic set!

With all the bulk I've received over the years, I'm sure I have the parts to build a number of sets I've never bought.

Your post reminds me, a year or two ago I found a long forgotten Cargo Train that is now yours :)

I know exactly what sets I have and how much they cost. My wife on the other hand has no idea at all.

Same here. I often think I'm sure I have such and such a set but it turns out I either:
1 Borrowed it to build and never actually owned it
2 Built the set from my own parts collection
3 Owned it but sold it
4 Owned it but broke it down for parts for MOCs

Or frequently a combination of 3 and 4, taking out the bits I want and sell off the rest.

And thank you for that!  I've got a fleet of nine of those now.  I may break down and make it 10 at some point...just because.

I wish I would find random Pirates sets in my collection that I never knew I had... but alas, I've had to do all my collecting the hard way.

I'm also pretty meticulous in the cataloging of my collection (thanks Brickset!) so I always have a very good grasp on exactly what I have and what I don't (for example, I even keep track of which classic sets I'm missing instructions to via the custom tags).

I still count sets I’ve broken down for parts as “owned”. After all, I should be able to build them again if I want.

Same here. For one thing, I don't keep polybag sets' parts separate, but dump them in a bag with the parts from other polybags from the same or similar themes.
