Is the Kingdom Chess set a real Lego set?

Howdy,

I'm seeing a few Chess sets, like this one on a national retailer's site i.e Walmart https://www.walmart.com/ip/LEGO-Kingdoms-Set-Chess-Set-853373/385219831 for the Lego Kingdoms Set Chess Set (853373), but for the life of me I can't seem to find it anywhere on Lego.com or any of the other Lego related sites...

Is it a real Lego set & if so, how does one go about finding it on these sites as 853373 brings up nothing & none of my searches chess, kingdom chess, etc. do either.

Thanks!

Yes, it's a real set. It's on Walmart because they allow 3rd party sellers to advertise like Amazon does. That set has been discontinued years ago that's why you can't find it on Lego's website. If you want it, I would look to Ebay or Bricklink.

Searching 853373 on Brickset brings it right up.

Remember on bricklink it will be in gear and not in sets, as it is a game and bricklink still list games in gear, whether they have no traditional parts or at the other extreme are 100% normal LEGO.

    Howdy,

    • My first mistake was not realizing 8533\3 in the URL was the Lego number.
    • When I couldn't find it, I tried searching for the set & came up with this Chess Set: https://brickset.com/sets/851499-1/Knights-Kingdom-Chess-Set which certainly it's the correct set.
    • Tack on not finding it on Lego.com (I'm a new AFOL, so didn't know if they had the entire DB or not).
    • After these two dead ends I became curious as I know places like Walmart do indeed allow 3rd party sellers.

    Thanks all!

^ The only horses I see are the knights for the rear-left set of pieces.

In theory it looks great but it was made in China at a time when Chinese-manufactured minfigs were terrible quality and noticeably different from those made elsewhere.

^ That’s interesting.  I remember how much of a thing that was for a lot of us back then but has mostly gone quiet since.  Either all minifigures dropped similarly in quality or LEGO was able to improve the quality coming out of those factories.

Funny, when digging out the set number last week, I started reading all of its various reviews in Brickset’s listing, including the one where @Huw referred to it being £99.

I remember pushing the kids in one of those LLW carts and on the handle was an advert promoting the £99 sale.  They had them knocking about for months, trying to get rid of them.  Those were the days when you could spend £50 in the Big Shop at Christmas and they’d give you an annual pass for the following year.  The chess set and a keychain saw my wife and I both passes.  Kids went free.  :). The Golden Years of LEGO for me.  Lol, still haven’t opened it, or even removed it from its outer shipping carton.

That is actually really interesting.  I have really wanted the Castle Giant Chess Set since I first saw it a few years ago, but was never able to pull together the funds and the will to actually go through with it at the same time.  Hearing that it may have serious QC issues is definitely making me think about taking it off the wanted list entirely.  I wish they would just make a new one that I could get, then I wouldn't have to worry about it! :P

As I recall, this was true of the Kingdoms Chess Set, but I don't ... think it was true of the Giant Chess Set?  I'll have to dig out my big honkin' box to verify, but I thought we first started seeing Chinese manufactured minifigs in 2009/2010?

If this were the criteria, half of 2020's products wouldn't be LEGO sets.

Just wait until you try to inventory the parts of an older set using LEGO's Bricks and Pieces site... so many missing pieces...

Dave! Had I known an inquiry on the veracity of an older rando set would unearth Dave, I would have been questioning #10191 Star Justice a lot sooner. :o)
