YIPES!!  I just browsed ebay to see what the space coin is going for.   I may be inclined to turn mine into real coin at those prices.

I hadn't used the new VIP stuff since the change either...until a few months back when I redeemed some points.  However, I redeemed them for IN STORE points and didn't realize they weren't the same as the online points.  I called customer service and got it changed.  They were very understanding and it seemed like it was a common mistake.

I haven't used the "new" VIP program since it switched over and I've got 40,000+ points.  My plan is to use them all on Mos Eisley Cantina when it becomes available again at my local LEGO shop.  That said, my plan was to redeem them for IN STORE points.   How are the IN STORE points different from ONLINE points.   Is there something I need to be aware of before redeeming my points and driving down to the store?

The value of the points is the same, you just need to redeem them for in-store rather than online. I don't know why there needs to be a different voucher. I only shop in-store, and I've never had any difficulty.

In my experience, it's a surprisingly painless experience. Once you've redeemed online, when paying at a retail store they will automatically remind you that you have credit available to use.

Word of caution for anyone waiting to claim their redemption code for the Space coin or other codes-LEGO issues more redemption codes than the quantity they actually have of the items.

Yes-it says you have 60 days to place your order but if more people place their orders than there are coins you will be out of luck when you try to place an order!

I thought that because I had the code and "60 days" to place an order that I would be fine.

I left the ‘Signed Llama Poster’ to redeem about 29-30 days after I originally got the code, and it turned out it was poster 94 of 100 total. You could extrapolate that and assume perhaps 95% of the quantity of the original item will have gone by the time  a month has passed. But it probably depends on lots of factors - like any new releases, other GWPs on offer to tempt people to order etc.

Are you saying you never received a coin for a code you'd redeemed? That would be a very poor effort on Lego's part. Or are you just speculating? I wasn't in any hurry to claim mu Space coin. Then again... it's always good to have an excuse to put in a Lego order!

Also keen to know if it's speculation or evidenced as also wasn't in a rush to redeem.

You could gamble about who will be the last to place an order and get the magic 100/100 number.

I’ve been doing some organizing in the Lego storage closet today, and was reminded of a comment I made a week ago after finding this stuff...

Space coin is sold out in the US... I have to keep reminding myself that I collect Lego, not coins...
I may not collect coins, but apparently I collect lunch boxes, gift wrap, tote bags, and key chains, among other things...
I still regret not getting that lunch box.

Not that I have the slightest clue what I'd do with it... but it just looks so cool!

Ok, don’t hate.  I got my coin but was surprised that it was already affixed between 3 “miss-aligned” polycarbonate sheets.  Is this normal for the coins?  I guess I expected it to be loose so that you could put it in the special case with the other coins.
  • KungFuKennyKungFuKenny Member Posts: 2,368
The reviews on the main page mention the misaligned case, along with the scratches... I think the special case went quickly from the VIP reward center...

It seems the supply was at least a little larger in the US, as my sister and I were both able to get a copy... but neither of us is particularly happy with the process. Both of us had major issues with the VIP site and getting our codes, and then both of us also had our orders error out after payment and were in limbo for ~10 minutes waiting to see if they had actually gone through or not.  I was a little more patient than my sister, so I think I'm in good (although disgruntled shape) at the end of the day.  But she gets anxious when things don't work, so she may have to call CS and cancel an order, as when she first errored out and her bag was emptied, she thought they had just lost her order completely and put a second one in.  She is, understandably, even less gruntled about the whole thing than I am.  How hard is it to have an AWS contract in place for spinning up additional capacity, especially for what should be completely predictable usage spikes?  Basically every other major online company in the world does it, LEGO.  You can too.

I redeemed points for the coin but when placing an order I called to make sure I would receive the coin. The CS rep told me it was no longer available even though I had already redeemed the points for the code. He said more codes were claimed than there were coins available.

On the advice of a friend who placed an order I called LEGO CS to inquire about the availability of the Classic Space coin. I was told that as long as I had a code that I could redeem it for the coin. This was NOT what I was told earlier this month when I tried to place an order for the coin so I am glad I got to speak with someone who knew what they were talking about tonight!
CS rep waived the $35 threshold for free shipping so I've got the coin coming (fingers crossed!). Order email confirms it!

Thanks for the heads up, won't be waiting up tonight then.

Is this more Lego shenanigans, at this point we would kind of be a bit disappointed if coin 5 of 5 wasn't impossible to get for some reason as it would mean all our predictions were wrong.
  • The_RancorThe_Rancor Member Posts: 2,626
Every other coin was released on the 1st of each month January-April I believe, so odd that they’ve changed it. Perhaps due to just wanting to focus everything on Star Wars for May the Fourth?

Im wondering if this is due to the backlash from:
    A) The desirability of the coins (and quick run out of ones like Castle and Space coins only to see large prices on eBay for them)
    B) The Ulysses Space probe debacle
    C) Quality of many of the coins so far (from what I have heard online)
Interesting, but I think a bit unfair to those who are just looking to complete the set as they have been available like clockwork since the first one (especially if they pull another boner to release it on a workday at times when many are at work). Hopefully it is to try to mint more of the coins before releasing them.. Then again the Ulysses probe was delayed and look what happened with that @#$%show.

    -chuckles-

I really hope it's a doozy of an excuse, like they got misplaced in a warehouse or were on that ship wedged in the Suez Canal.

Is it terrible to say that I am now nostalgic for the previous VIP system?

I've always wondered if all these claims of VIP rewards running out are more fear mongering, than anything.  I get it; this is understandable, given Lego's spotty track record with stock and IT infrastructure.

I waited almost 2 months before redeeming my mini VW Beetle reward and still got it.  Granted, it probably wasn't nearly as in-demand as the coin and probably had higher quantities available given that you could've redeemed 2 of them, if I recall correctly.

Still, I wonder how frequently people have had VIP rewards sell out before they were able to redeem their voucher.  I wouldn't doubt that this did happen to people before, but I am somewhat skeptical about how frequently this happens.

More likely they said: "Let's only make 5000 coins since we still have a ridiculous overstock of downloadable coloring sheets."

Yeah I think I was generous with the '50000' number.

Some new activity packs for downloading just in time for half-term in the UK 50 points each, spanning Ninjago, summer, city, water, nature,  cars and fkying themes.

also 6 months access to a story telling/creating app ‘OK Play’ for 20 points.

So I guess the survey was to help them determine what we would consider to be the most worthless rewards and give us yet more useless choices.

The downloadable pictures and activity packs always seem essentially worthless to us adults spending large amounts during the year and building up thousands of points. It does make sense having something extra free for parents buying small sets for children to encourage them to sign up as a VIP to get the small number of points.

But they aren't "free".  The play thing is 20 points & the activity sets are each 50 points.  Then I would need to buy paper, ink & a printer to be able to download these downloadable items (yes I do own a printer).  So at 7+ dollars worth of points plus printing supplies if I had children I would be encouraging them to save their points toward purchasing a set they really desire.

I can't wait for them to release downloadable prints of the Ulysses probe and collectable coins that cost VIP points.

"We reviewed all the comments in the survey and we heard you!  To make up for the low stock of these previous VIP rewards, we're happy to announce that we're releasing an UNLIMITED amount of downloadable prints of these rewards for JUST 20 points each!"
