Whereas classic space is clearly a defined theme, and no-one would think to bulk into m-tron or ice planet into that, hence less of an outcry over the spilt space vote (and the fact that classic space got enough qualifying votes on it own I guess).
Lego however, and in this vote, used the term classic castle to mean pre-crusaders, so 70s era yellow castle. Which probably like most castle fans, I respect the history, but has far fewer devotees than the 80s/90s stuff.
But hey, for me, anything older than the Medieval Blacksmith is Classic Castle, ahah.
MandRProductions has finally been kicked out of the Lego Ambassador Network, rightfully so - he should never have been on it in the first place.
I have mixed feelings around LAN overall, was wondering what you all think of it.
Nevertheless, I am (evidently) not to fond of the guy and like you said, I hope he can do some growing up for the sake of his career's longevity.
350k subscribers, a car and a house are supposed to impress me? It doesn't. Perhaps I'm not that fussed with having fancy things to show off to complete strangers on YT with.
From the bit I heard he was a member of the LAN, he didn't abide by the rules that LEGO set out, he did this for some time and lost the privilege of being part of that which seems to include free sets, pre release information and more. Then he spent an hour repeating himself whilst trying to justify to his viewer why he didn't care about it at all. Great role model to his subscribers.
Also "shills"? an accomplice of a confidence trickster or swindler who poses as a genuine customer to entice or encourage others. No idea what that bit is supposed to mean. And cancel culture in overdrive? Sorry but you've lost me.
As the ambassador for ToroLUG, I take part in the LAN and, among other things, am responsible for making sure ToroLUG follows the rules of the LAN or we could lose recognition. This is no different from MandRProductions had to do. They decided not to bother, and were removed. It's not really a big deal - if they decide being a Recongized group is worth it, they could re-apply. They'd presumably have to explain what they were going to do differently from then on in order to comply with the rules.
Ambassadors definitely forward complaints directly to LEGO on the Ambassador Network and those complaints sometimes result in changes, as exemplified by the decision to cease regional exclusives. Of course, sometimes issues persist but they are being raised.
Where the rules are concerned, they are similar to any other rules! They can certainly be questioned and are sometimes changed. However, unilaterally ignoring those rules is liable to incur repercussions, which seems reasonable to me. Also, those rules are not particularly taxing, nor do they prevent people from being honest.
I should clarify that I am not writing as Brickset's ambassador here, that is @drdavewatford, I am merely saying things as I see them!
Additionally, it's not a primary focus of LEGO - getting seven year-olds to ask for a Millennium Falcon, Police Station or a Dolphin Cruiser is the goal. And the Minecraft stuff as well.
Pardon?
If they began with the intention of having fun, sharing a unique perspective or providing a valuable service then I consider that to be worthwhile. I would suggest that Brickset and therefore @Huw and everyone else on the team occupies that category.
However, there are some whose only intention is to make money by publishing videos or articles about any given subject, without consideration of creativity or originality. That content is not worthwhile from my perspective and usually comes across as disingenuous, although there are some people who will enjoy it.
With regard to MandRproductions specifically, his personality can sometimes be abrasive. However, I do watch his videos sometimes because I find it interesting to hear from the section of LEGO Star Wars fans that Ryan, in some regards, represents.
I myself have sat mesmerized by a guy unblocking storm drains and culverts. It’s weirdly therapeutic. And appeals to the kid in me that loved to play in water :)
- MF Microfighter - TLG have now done 3 of these in quite quick succession
- Hoth Microfighters - we already had an AT-AT Microfighter before. The ‘Hoth Luke’ is the only draw
- 4+ X-Wing - some credit for being ST based for some variance, but still an X-Wing
- Downscaled TIE - there’s always a TIE on sale seemingly, design is ok at this scale but not essential
- Downscaled X-Wing - design here is decent, but wanting General Dodonna is not enough to want the set, considering ‘X-Wing overload syndrome’.
- Downscaled Shuttle - sacrifices a lot more than the X-Wing and TIE compared to its previous iteration at this scale and minifigures are very boring, but at least the vehicle is comparatively rare in Lego form.
I’m excited to see which rumours for the Star Wars summer wave come true - my fingers are crossed for more detailed models but it’s more important that they’re not just ‘more of the same’. As the cheaper sets from the January wave will still be on shelves, it should mean more detail and expense can be put into the Summer range without downscaling.
