I'd put this on the 90th anniversary set discussion, but I don't want to derail that!

All the different categories that you could vote for with space, castle or pirate related like M-Tron, Forestmen or Imperials, could all have been put under just three categories of Classic Space, Classic Castle or Classic Pirate. There really isn't much difference between the sub themes of each apart from different colours. Add up the sub votes for each one of those and you'd end up with the Classic trio at the top as expected
That's basically why they kept Classic Castle as a fourth choice for the final round. Because Space and Pirates were already there.
They didn't keep Classic Castle, they kept Castle. I voted for Castle, there's no way I would have voted that way for Classic Castle.

I feel no need to buy more than one #75280 501st Legion Clone Troopers. If they were plain (black and white) Phase 2 troopers, then yeah, I'd want more. On the other hand, I have two (so far!) #75299 Trouble on Tatooine: I like everything in that set.

I think even among the castle 'community' this has caused some confusion. I would say most people use the term classic castle to mean all pre-2000ish Castle themes, with modern castle being post-2000 fantasy era to kingdoms (With Knights kingdom being the awkward middle child). Hence why people thought all the categories should have been together.

Whereas classic space is clearly a defined theme, and no-one would think to bulk into m-tron or ice planet into that, hence less of an outcry over the spilt space vote (and the fact that classic space got enough qualifying votes on it own I guess).

Lego however, and in this vote, used the term classic castle to mean pre-crusaders, so 70s era yellow castle. Which probably like most castle fans, I respect the history, but has far fewer devotees than the 80s/90s stuff.

    True.
But hey, for me, anything older than the Medieval Blacksmith is Classic Castle, ahah.

    To revive the dead horse...

MandRProductions has finally been kicked out of the Lego Ambassador Network, rightfully so - he should never have been on it in the first place.

I have mixed feelings around LAN overall, was wondering what you all think of it.

...And now I realise why I can never be bothered to watch these sort of LEGO review channels. Utter tripe....
It's easy to throw shade, not quite so easy to build a channel of nearly 350k subscribers, then buy a Mustang with the proceeds.  He'll buy a house next.  Think about that for a sec.
Ryan's got some growing up to do - but I appreciate honesty.  Furthermore, I can't stand shills...or cancel culture in overdrive.

^ Yes, I must concede that his accomplishments are certainly impressive. And upon further digging, I did discover that his latest controversy - independent of the LAN situation - was on the basis that he told a fellow LEGO YouTuber to "shut up" on a livestream. Hardly the crime of the century...

Nevertheless, I am (evidently) not to fond of the guy and like you said, I hope he can do some growing up for the sake of his career's longevity.

"Throw shade?" Sorry, can you translate for normal people please!
350k subscribers, a car and a house are supposed to impress me? It doesn't. Perhaps I'm not that fussed with having fancy things to show off to complete strangers on YT with.
From the bit I heard he was a member of the LAN, he didn't abide by the rules that LEGO set out, he did this for some time and lost the privilege of being part of that which seems to include free sets, pre release information and more. Then he spent an hour repeating himself whilst trying to justify to his viewer why he didn't care about it at all. Great role model to his subscribers.
Also "shills"? an accomplice of a confidence trickster or swindler who poses as a genuine customer to entice or encourage others. No idea what that bit is supposed to mean. And cancel culture in overdrive? Sorry but you've lost me.

The LAN has pretty strict rules for membership. Many fan media sites like youtube channels find it difficult to comply because, for example, you're not allowed to discuss leaks. So media that is not "Recognized" by LEGO can discuss leaks whenever they want, while "official" Recognized media has to keep their mouths shut until the product is officially announced. Recognized lego clubs have similar rules. It's up to each group to decide if they get the right benefits from being on the LAN. If you want to be Recognized you need to follow the rules to get the benefits. That's all. Groups/sites get derecognized all the time.

As the ambassador for ToroLUG, I take part in the LAN and, among other things, am responsible for making sure ToroLUG follows the rules of the LAN or we could lose recognition. This is no different from MandRProductions had to do. They decided not to bother, and were removed. It's not really a big deal - if they decide being a Recongized group is worth it, they could re-apply. They'd presumably have to explain what they were going to do differently from then on in order to comply with the rules.

I hate exclusive clubs companies have where you have to prove your worth. Just becomes a status symbol and a mindset where if you're not in this club your not really part of the wider community.

I'm not fond of exclusive minifigs, especially when they're only in the most expensive set of a particular theme, subtheme, wave, etc. I understand why TLG does it, but I think it sucks, especially for kids, to have something awesome like a minifig (and all minifigs are pretty cool to me) be out of reach.

^ I actually don’t mind a set of characters being spread across a number of sets in a release.  This way I don’t get all these doubles and am otherwise encouraged to complete a release.  So long as I have a reasonable shot at all main characters, I’m happy.  If the $400 Diagon Alley was the only way to get Hagrid, for example, I’d be frustrated.  If it’s a niche /secondary character, I’m more ok with it being less available or a GWP.

Low-production obscure characters in a more expensive set or as a GWP to prompt a collector to purchase a certain level of product is a time-tested technique to keep 'heavy users' interested.

Additionally, it's not a primary focus of LEGO - getting seven year-olds to ask for a Millennium Falcon, Police Station or a Dolphin Cruiser is the goal.  And the Minecraft stuff as well.

I can get a bit miffed about exclusive characters in expensive sets, since I like to collect minifigures and sometimes I feel compelled to get a set for them alone. Sometimes it works out well, like the LEGO Batman Movie's Arkham Asylum turning out to be a nice set as well as having Dr. Quinzel, but sometimes it's not so great (Like the movie's Scuttler, which was a dud except for the Poison Ivy figure.) But that's on me for buying the whole sets and not seeking the figures loose online, so I can't really hold it against LEGO for doing that.

Hello, my name is Patrick and I like BURP.  It has been 5 days since I last placed a BnP order for  BURP.  That is all.
The first step is admitting that you are powerless when it comes to BURPs.  Speaking about your problem in a public forum like this will go a long way toward helping you overcome your BURP addiction.  I personally prefer SNOT, but since I work in the healthcare field I think that’s pretty understandable...🙂

Never understood the hatred for #43179.  It's so obviously Mickey and Minnie, in a style both original and yet reminiscent of older times.  They really don't deserve the hate they get.

As someone who grew up in a time before smart phones or the internet I feel much more comfortable reading a written review, then forming my own opinion. I worry for those who need to be told by an influencer what to think about anything, I'm fully determined to make sure my kids grow up as kids playing outdoors not glued to a screen and have the ability to make their own decisions that are not influenced externally!

Influencers exist and have existed in all media. YouTube/TikTok/Instagram are just new ways to do it. And like all media, they are mostly garbage with some good stuff sprinkled in. We all grow up learning how to differentiate between the two. And then we argue about it :)

Nah, thousands of subs isn't something to worry about.  There are literally billions of people on the internet, so even 10s of thousands of subs is a drop in the bucket.  Depending on the platform, even 100k subs can be tiny.  Remember that something like 5% of the US population really, honestly believes that we're ruled over by an alien race of reptiles.  That's like 16.5 MILLION people right there.  And they've always been around, they're not new.  But now you can get a view into the kinds of asinine things that they like to do and enjoy every day.  Like watching videos of a guy just reading Reddit threads.

(EDIT: Okay, I admit that only something like 4% of the people in that answered the conspiracy survey said they believed in reptilian overlords, not 5%.  And it's likely that the majority of them don't REALLY believe that.  But if even 1% of THOSE people believe it, that's still 132,000 AMERICANS alone that believe that.  Still plenty of people out there to watch the guy reading Reddit threads.)

I think one important difference between some influencers and others is their intent when beginning to create content, in whatever the chosen media might be.

If they began with the intention of having fun, sharing a unique perspective or providing a valuable service then I consider that to be worthwhile. I would suggest that Brickset and therefore @Huw and everyone else on the team occupies that category.

However, there are some whose only intention is to make money by publishing videos or articles about any given subject, without consideration of creativity or originality. That content is not worthwhile from my perspective and usually comes across as disingenuous, although there are some people who will enjoy it.

With regard to MandRproductions specifically, his personality can sometimes be abrasive. However, I do watch his videos sometimes because I find it interesting to hear from the section of LEGO Star Wars fans that Ryan, in some regards, represents.

Influencers seem to have the power to pretty much decide what people will like. Though I'm not sure if it's because people are easily influenced, or it's because since they have a lot of followers, the portion that will agree is likely to be large even if it's a minority.

You never know what people are going to find soothing. There are various types of channels out there that specialize in weird sounds, or watching people clean.
I myself have sat mesmerized by a guy unblocking storm drains and culverts. It’s weirdly therapeutic. And appeals to the kid in me that loved to play in water :)

@daewoo my 12 year old listens to one of those droaning voices reading stuff from what I assume is Reddit. I have always thought it's a robot because his voice has literally one tone. He also doesn't pause for breath between stories. The robot voice is semi relaxing.

I don’t like the fact that Lego is shrinking the scale of the new Star Wars sets. While I realize this is to keep them affordable, I wish they would improve on previous versions. For now I’m just going to stick with picking up the figures.

For me the fundamental scaling isn’t the issue - it’s the fact that most of the January wave this year is just vehicles TLG produces constantly (not exactly an unpopular opinion though). If TLG did slightly scaled down sets for vehicles that have only ever appeared once or twice in Lego before I would be quite interested, but as things stand:

    - MF Microfighter - TLG have now done 3 of these in quite quick succession
    - Hoth Microfighters - we already had an AT-AT Microfighter before. The ‘Hoth Luke’ is the only draw
    - 4+ X-Wing - some credit for being ST based for some variance, but still an X-Wing
    - Downscaled TIE - there’s always a TIE on sale seemingly, design is ok at this scale but not essential
    - Downscaled X-Wing - design here is decent, but wanting General Dodonna is not enough to want the set, considering ‘X-Wing overload syndrome’.
    - Downscaled Shuttle - sacrifices a lot more than the X-Wing and TIE compared to its previous iteration at this scale and minifigures are very boring, but at least the vehicle is comparatively rare in Lego form.

I’m excited to see which rumours for the Star Wars summer wave come true - my fingers are crossed for more detailed models but it’s more important that they’re not just ‘more of the same’. As the cheaper sets from the January wave will still be on shelves, it should mean more detail and expense can be put into the Summer range without downscaling.
