General VIDIYO Discussion

edited January 2021 in Collecting
It’s finally been revealed after months of speculation around secretive theme names and leaks, so let’s discuss!

A quick segment from the press release from the front page:

The LEGO Group and Universal Music Group (UMG) have today announced LEGO VIDIYO, a playful and innovative music video maker experience designed to celebrate and expand children’s creativity and passion for music. LEGO VIDIYO is a brand-new way to play that helps children dream big by directing, producing, starring in, and sharing their own music videos, using tracks from across the globe, led by chart hits from UMG’s unrivalled artists.

LEGO VIDIYO is aimed at children aged 7-10, providing a safe universe where they can traverse the worlds of physical and digital play. The platform lets children experiment with play and music, a powerful combination that’s fundamental to their development, extending their ability to connect with other people emotionally and creatively.

I’m really excited for this theme. Sure, I’m not the target audience but the unusual minifigs, heaving plethora of tiles and perhaps slightly better intended app synergy are in its favour for me, even if it doesn’t last forever. It’s going to be interesting to find out the answers but there are already many questions -

  • What are the full contents of the sets / how many Beatbits in each?
  • Are the Beatbit tiles random or just part of certain sets? (Looks like the latter)
  • What might the prices be like?
  • How many will be there be/how often will we see a new wave/app update?
  • How will fans use the specialised parts in ingenious ways?
  • Will the app be popular with kids already using the (unmoderated) Tiktok?
  • Will AFOLs be lining up Stormtroopers for a mega dance party to ‘Don’t Call Me Up’? (I know I will)
What do you think? (Press release comments not withstanding)

I have a feeling this is going to be a giant CMF like collection and a collect all the tiles like the Dots line all at the same time.

TBH, as long as the prices are reasonable, I think I would be totally okay with that.

I may be interested in some of the Minifigs but the Tiles aren't calling to me yet.  Curious to see what other interesting parts may be included with some of the sets.  I saw a cube with a headphone shaped handle in a picture somewhere.  Not sure if the cube is like the Friends ones or a slightly bigger version.

It's cool to see the CM bagpipe player on a tile! He must be pretty famous to be featured in an album.

Part of me was wondering if this might be why the latest CMF line has fewer figures.

I’m a little interested in this line - mainly for some interesting fig and parts but also a little curious about how the app will work. I do worry that the the sets (which for the most part don’t look to be much more than minifigures pods) might be overly expensive to fund the cost of the app - in particular the additional cost of moderating the video content for uploads.

Also I think the app might have the very typical problem of kids (and some parents) thinking they’ll be able to use any minifigures for the videos then being disappointed that it’s only the Theme specific figs. When Hidden Side came out I was showing how the sets work at a LEGO event and a surprising amount of people asked if you could scan any LEGO creation with the app to play with.

definitely want the melty head ice cream guy, even if it’s just to go with the LEGO Movie 2 Ice Cream guy!

I might be interested in a couple of the tiles, and maybe the odd minifigure part, but aside from that there is nothing interesting for me (yet).

I've read the description, I've watched the video, and I still don't get it! :) But, hey, those minifigures look amazing, so I'll definitely be getting some of them day one when they inevitably get massively discounted due to poor sales.

The theme as a whole doesn't appeal to me, but that's OK because I'm not at all the target audience. However, it does look like there will be some really fun minifigures (or minifigure parts) and printed tiles, so I'll likely pick up the random odd item or two from the line.

It's clever... kids love YouTube and TikTok, but parents worry about what they're seeing or doing on there. So there's obvious adult appeal in giving them a moderated walled garden where they can't upload anything identifiable or access inappropriate content. And the UMG back catalogue will encourage play across generations, because people will go, "Look up this song, Iet's tinker with it," and that also plays into people's experiences with games like Guitar Hero, or with karaoke.

I suppose it depends if the kids actually want a kid-friendly, safe video app hooked into Lego, but from what little we're seeing here the aesthetics seem fun. I wonder if they're going to sell it as sets where you know what you're getting, or blind bags.

I think it's cute. Reminds me of the Hasbro game Dropmix, both in terms of the app integration as well as the original album-style art (for the cards in that but the 2x2 tiles in this). But also, unlike Dropmix, it looks like all you need is one of the small-ish sets and the app to get started, instead of an expensive electronic starter set in addition to the app.

I doubt it will last more than a couple years, but for something like this that's not really the point—something like this seems designed to make waves and ride those out for as long as they last, and no longer.

Somebody likes it! What is she, a 10 year old girl? Oh, wait a minute ...

I imagine most kids will like it. My son loved the idea of scanning Nexo Knights tiles. It seemed totally pointless to me, but to someone in the target age range the idea of scanning a physical item and something happening on screen is great.

Like I've said, kids are the target audience, but they're not the ones buying it. As a joke, even LEGO admits to this on their website.
I give my daughters LEGO to avoid them spending time looking at screens. We don't have a tablet (pointless for our lifestyle) and they're too young to have a phone. Also, I don't really see an appeal in it, be it fun-related or parts-related. Maybe I'll bricklink a minifigs or two and that's it.
So, even if they like the theme when I show them the video, I won't be buying it. I prefer to spend the same amount (or less, depends on the prices for these sets) on DOTS, which I know they already love and for which I see a use in terms of parts.

Look, all I'm saying is that in 20 years when the Tech Infection Army invades the real world to get their revenge on LEGO for being cancelled before they even made it on the show, you're going to regret saying that when me and my complete collection of Nexo Knight powers are just gonna sit back and watch you get turned into a byter!

Does anyone know many Vidiyo minifigures have been leaked so far? I've seen maybe six, but I keep hearing rumors of possibly more.

I think we’ve seen 6-8 but they’ve almost all been ‘confirmed’ in official marketing material so far.

Hmm... $20 seems like a pretty high cost but we’re still not 100% sure what the full sets will contain. Word on the street ie leaks, was that they were like pods with some things inside such as the minifig and Beatbits.

What interests me is the odd ‘Lego Vidiyo Minifigs 1’ item for $5. I think we should assume there may be some form of minifig packets that release alongside the main pods? I also wonder what ‘TBD-Harl’ means, like they couldn’t confirm what it was?

Hmm, the leaflet shows a single "beat bit" per CMF, but the box says "1 minfigure + 3 beat bits"…

The instructions also show three being attached to the base, so presumably three are included. Maybe one of those three tiles is "rare" and exclusive to each figure (hence being pictured alongside them), and the other two are "common" and available in other sets? That's sort of how the Nexo Powers in the Nexo Knights "ultimate" figure packs worked in the first year, IIRC.

... Or rattle them? But yeah, I'm right there with you. First they increased the price... now this?

This is an example of a big company taking advantage of the customers.

Does anyone know if the barcodes will be different per character like series 1?
  • karritkarrit Member Posts: 980
Customers aren't being taken advantage of if they willingly pay the price asked for a blind packaged item.  Most blind bag/box collectibles are sold packaged in a way that you can't tell what's in them.  So Lego up until now has been one of the few that didn't follow this practice.  I've rarely ever bought anything packaged so that you had absolutely no way of knowing what was in it.  If people stopped buying things packaged this way they'd be forced to stop this type of packaging.  But there will always be enough people willing to pay the price for mystery items so there is no incentive for companies to stop the practice.  At least the Lego stuff is relatively inexpensive compared to some other blind packaged collectibles but I doubt I'll be trying to complete any sets myself going forward.  I may take my chances with a few packs/boxes here & there but unless it's a set I know I want most of I'll refrain from purchasing complete sets/boxes from other sources.

    An excellent point!  :)

Perhaps I should have worded it better, but my idea was that now there's a good demand for collectable minifigures, they're 1) upping the price and 2) making it harder to find what someone wants to get.

For me personally, I don't have a lot of extra money floating around. So therefore I can't buy blind bags randomly until I get what I want.

Pic on instagram shows the contents of one of the single figures. Three of the tiles in the bag, one relevant to the minifigure and two others. Plus a 2x6 plate and some brackets.

Some new images of the figure pods on Instagram suggest they have a bit more too them than initially suggested, looks like some tiles etc to decorate the front of the pods (unless those were added by the leaker) which gives them a similar look to some of the Dots stuff. It actually makes the price look quite a bit better too and there’s a photo of a box too which suggests they aren’t blind boxed so you will know what you’re getting.

think I might end up grabbing some now!

The main characters are boxed, the extra band mates are the blind bags. Showing 82 pieces for the Llama. I think we might get one £10 set and a couple of blind bags and see how we go.
New piece for the base of the boxes has slots for 16 2x2 tiles and looks to be a rounded corner 8x8 and just over a brick tall

if so that again puts me back on the fence.

All the information from stores that have put them out early including the pic higher up on this thread show that the pod sets are $20, so that might translate to £18. I think that’s quite steep for a single minifig and a small selection of parts that would usually make a £10 set by price per piece, but the app format, moderating, licensing, new minifig moulds, new pod moulds and presumably printed tiles all add up I guess.

As there’s only a handful of pods perhaps in the initial wave I’ll probably go for all of those, but the price is going to be a hard sell as a smaller toy for children. I think £15 would be slightly more bearable in the market.

Ouch - at those prices they’ll look especially bad value sat on a shelf next to the Friends Animal pods that are around half the price for a similar looking product.

I had a hard enough time justifying the $9.99 price of the Friends Cubes.  Double the  price for these Beat Boxes seems ridiculous just for a wacky looking Minifig & a bunch of printed tiles.  Yes I know there's a little more to it including the App but $19.99 for one of these is just way too much in my opinion.  At least the Fiends cubes had some interesting parts & cute little animals.

Funny that Smyths doesn’t list the ‘CMF’ Bandmates but that seems to confirm there are 6 beat boxes in the initial wave.

I have a very strong feeling TLG will need to reduce the prices on these - they’ll probably find they’re as hard to sell as the Brick Sketches at £18, which got reduced slightly to £15. Perhaps there will be some initial sales before people realise the full contents of the pods as they can’t so easily browse in a toy aisle but it really is high cost.

I think part of the problem is they are really small sets to try to add on the cost of running the online stuff - feel like they should have done some more substantial sets theat could be scanned into the app like the Hidden Side sets to try to build the additional costs into. As it is these look like they should be a similar price to the Friends animal pods or the Ninjago Arcade pods - £1-£2 more they might get away with but double the price for an app that most people won’t understand the cost of is definitely a hard sell.

I think most parents will think “if TikTok/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook are all free why would there be any cost to a LEGO version” - talking to people it’s pretty shocking how many people don’t realise that social media sites/apps make their money from data harvesting and advertising.

Smyths ended up selling their end-of-line Dimensions sets for 99p. I can see some of these going the same way if the pricing remains that high and few people buy in to them as a collection. Even at £15 or £12 each, I wouldn't buy these as a parent. And for the series - £108 for six minifigures plus their little decorated boxes.

I will use VIP points to reduce the price significantly enough, I expect maybe £30 or so to bring the pod price down to £13 each, but most people won’t have that ‘luxury’.

The issue I had with when Dimensions went on sale that I don’t really want to repeat, is that all the rare ones (mostly gold bases) vanished immediately leaving millions of unwanted Gimlis and Construction Emmets lying around. I’ve got my fingers crossed I can actually collect all of VIDIYO because I really like the design & character that’s gone into them, but i’m not holding my breath when it comes to random comic con type exclusives, or oddly rare printed tiles.
  • ShibShib Member Posts: 5,469
The yellow/gold bases were the year two stuff - a lot of people assumed there were less of them as the first year stuff was still hanging around a lot. Difficult to know if LEGO/retailers will go all in on this or not to gauge availability.

For me I only really want a few of the figs and a couple of the new parts but even with so little that I’m after no way can I justify that price tag.

definitely a shame about the pricing, I’d like to try a couple but at those prices I’ll pass. If you consider the RRP is the same as #76173 #60283 #41691 or #31114 which will All be on the same shelf space, I really just can’t imagine these selling well.
