I wonder if they are five unique coins because the middle one just looks like the back of the coin.
It doesn't quite. The middle coin looks like a LEGO stud, but the back of the coin has the square LEGO logo and the word VIP. Perhaps the fifth coin is just a stud?

Think i'll sit this one out for now as seems steep and I'd be concerned in VIP rewards style that if started I may be too late for a later coin selling out.

Plus I have an issue myself (which I am repeating now as I said it way back about the Fiat prints)... if there are 5 coins and 1 case that's 6 separate orders I need to place to redeem 1 code at a time, if there was one item as a whole set I would be more tempted.

Nice idea though, perhaps once they explain it more i.e. size of coin, timescale for rest being issued etc I may change my mind.

Is this a preview of the next "improvement" to the VIP programme?  In future we'll need to exchange our VIP points for vouchers, which will allow us to buy special VIP coins, which can then be spent on Lego products to earn more VIP points, to buy more coins...

The middle coin in actually my favorite and the only one I would consider getting. It looks like those little gold coins you used to get all stuck together and one side of the coin would say LEGO and the other side said 10, 20, 30, or 40.

I think I could live with just the Classic Space one at most.

This is my issue too - that is 6 orders, and of course you need to spend the minimum to get free shipping....suddenly very expensive!

I just bought the Castle coin which looks quite nice. I plan to get also the Classic space one, and probably the middle Gold one. That will be it for me, as I don't really like the last two and I don't plan on making more than 3 orders in the months to come.

The idea is neat... and I like the classic space and pirates coins, but this is definitely a price too high for me. If I could straight out buy a single coin for maybe $5 (not VIP points) I could be more tempted.

The coins and other "rewards" are useless trinkets that their earnest but misguided marketing dept burps up. Just re-make coveted pieces and colors that people actually want for their Lego creations.

I'd be happy if they followed through with offering up previously available GWP's, not the polybag ones that are  available elsewhere for purchase, as rewards.  Prints, coloring pages & signed sets that are blink & you miss them don't do anything for me.
Those coins seem a bit overpriced since they have not issued any info regarding them or how they'll be available going forward.

I'd prefer they put sought after parts in regular sets, not VIP rewards.

Some people do collect LEGO branded display items outside of traditional parts. Anyone with a display sign, storage container, notepad, lighter, cuff links, whatever, is no different to someone collecting a shiny object with their favourite theme's logo on it.

Looks like the case has gone. I wonder if each coin will sell out quicker as people see the price go up on ebay. Or as more people miss out on a coin will they just give up on trying to get them all and the last ones will be the easiest to get.

Classic LEGO VIP. Advertising the first of the collector coins but no cases to put them in as they are sold out!

I imagine Space and Castle will be the popular ones. I wouldn't hang around on that one. I doubt that many will bother to go for full sets, especially as LEGO have run out of the cases now.
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,333
^ Yeah I didn't think about it that way. Space will be most popular for sure, lots of people collect anything with the classic logo on. As much as I love Octan it will be the least popular. The hard one to tell is maybe the plan lego one.

If I can’t have a display case to put them in I don’t know if I want the coins. Simple as that.

If I could get all of the coins and the case with a single voucher worth about $25, I would probably do it. 6 separate orders and ~$50? No thanks.

So I got the coin display in the mail today (the first coin is still on the way), and I have to say, I was actually pretty surprised by its size.  I've put a picture in next to one of the medium size BrickHeadz boxes for reference.  (I didn't unwrap it cause, well, I don't want to scratch it up or anything before I even have something to put in it :P)  In terms of measurements, it's ~11.5in x 3.25in, or 29cm x 8cm, and it feels much more hefty and solid than I was expecting, even given its size.  Personally I was kind of on the fence about getting these given the point cost, but it seems to be much larger and potentially more substantial than it first appears on the VIP site with no real context, and I feel much better about the point cost having the display in hand now.

Each individual coin also comes in a display case like the big one above. I haven't ordered anything, but if I did have the big case, I'd be kinda at a loss what to do with all the smaller individual cases. They'd just end up being one of those things that there is no point in keeping, but that I wouldn't want to throw away.

Are these coins in any way compatible with LEGO system? As in, could a minifigure or a clip hold the edge of the coin?
  • FizyxFizyx Member Posts: 1,364
Got the coin today, and figured out how to remove the wrapping (tissue paper) without ruining it so I can wrap it again.  Better pic of the case and coin below.  Like @Brainslugged said, the coins themselves come in a nice case as well.  The individual case the coin comes in is slight thicker (maybe 1 mm) than the 5 coin case.  The coin appears to be about 2.5mm thick from a rough measurement outside the case.  (Maybe slightly less as it is loose enough to rotate when shaken in the case it came in.)  Both cases are made of 3 acrylic layers and held shut at the corners by four screws. I could see people having issues where they may torque the screws down too tightly may crack the acrylic, although I don't know if the fittings they screw into (the flat metal studs you see in the corners in the picture) will actually allow it, since I'm too lazy to get my screwdriver and test it at the moment :P

That looks like the 4th circle is lower than the others.

If that is the case (pardon the pun), I wonder if they got pulled for that defect rather than sold out.

I actually back-pedalled and redeemed the code for the Castle coin to add to my Blacksmith order when that’s released. As I mentioned the main thing discouraging me was the thought that the coin would come loose and i’d have no way of displaying it, but this is not the case.

Having read the review on the front page I can acknowledge there could be small scratches etc but I don’t think I’d notice when on display. Nor would I see really small hand painting issues. What I actually thought was that it was great to have a small visual reminder of some of TLG’s best themes, that I could also have on my desk for example. Looks like the only slightly annoying thing might be the alignment of the coin to me.

You're coin looks better than the one shown in the Brickset review. The crown appears  yellow instead of a brownpink color. Perhaps it's your camera and lighting, or perhaps the quality of these coins is as variable as the color of dark red LEGO parts.

My picture was taken by a high-quality camera under lights with a CRI around 97, even though it was a very quick and dirty shot :P  Color wise the picture is very accurate for what mine looks like.  I actually think the review on the front page is rather overblown and overly negative, although if the coloration is really as much off of what mine is for the reviewer as he suggests, I can't blame him that much.  I have a much different impression though.

That misaligned hole would drive me nuts. That’s bush league stuff there. Not the quality one expects from Lego.

The more they put out for VIP purchase, the less interested I am about VIP.  I used to check what was on the VIP site, but now I only go to get a voucher to reduce the price of actual Lego sets.  So, less competition for you guys who want all that superfluous stuff.

Bouwsteentjes (in Dutch here) had an overview of all upcoming prints when this series started.
The one on the left is listed as well, and also a very cute chicken:
LEGO 5006002 Originals Wooden Toy Hen and Chicks
So at some point it should become available...
