I made this gif because I thought so too:
(I don't know how long this gif will last as we're not strictly supposed to post them, if it's edited out by a mod, feel free to PM me ;-) and I'll see if I can share it in messages)
Great story! I liked the bit where you got two but what do you mean, "returned it to Kmart"!?? I don't understand this phrase. I know Kmart is a shop, it's the returning LEGO bit that I can't get my head around ;-)
Have to see the back to be sure
Here are all the sets with the bubble tyres:
As you say, it's not #6880 and it's not #1580 because that doesn't have any arms, but most of the other candidates from the 'Space' sets with bubble wheels are more blue than grey...
Here, again, are all the sets with the wiggly, bendable "extending" arms:
We have to assume that over the 20 years that the databases here on Brickset and over at Bricklink have developed, all the official LEGO sets will have been catalogued and documented.
I don't know what else to say. I honestly want to help, but right now, I have to say that your recollection of this being an official LEGO set is most likely incorrect. Perhaps it's an alternate model within a set, but I haven't seen anything like it on https://www.backoftheboxbuilds.com/ that @jason1976 linked to (great find by the way!).
I have searched other major brands of the time, most notable for the era, as suggested previously, Tyco and Tente to no avail. As always, I'm very much prepared to be proven wrong and furthermore would be delighted to be enlightened to the existence of a new Classic Space LEGO set.
Good luck in your quest.
off the cuff you have a Yoda Starfighter #75168 and some mini builds from the 2015 SW advent calendar #75097 ... if you type landspeeder and snow speeder search terms in to Bricklink you can browse and see exactly which ones you have of those...
There is a wealth of the old catalogs here on wishbook.com and although it's not the best interface, there are some delights to behold if you can be bother trawling through!
In a casual "flip" through a Sears Wishbook I did find another brand, "loc blocs" and they had a space range too, known as "space raider" that theme looks like it was circa 1984. IMO it all looks very similar to classic space. I did a quick google search that threw up some promising looking models but again, sadly, I drew a blank... is it worth considering these other (non LEGO) brands?
from Ninjago #70651
The TIE pilot seems to be a mish mash of parts including Imperial Ground Crew torso. Someone else might be able to add more detail before I get chance to look in more depth.
Barry is from quite a rare and desirable set (albeit not for him specifically, more to do with the raptors) so worth almost $15 at the moment. I think his head is rare in terms of populating a collection with more ethnicities.
looks like part of a series introduced in 2013
- Jabba’s Palace #9516
- Desert Skiff #9496
- Sith Fury-class Interceptor #9500
- Mandalorian Speeder #75022
- AT-RT #75002
- General Grievous’ Wheel Bike #75040
The Sith Fury is probably pretty sought after.
The flat panel in the bottom right looks like the palace door
