Do you disassemble your LEGO?

I build Lego technics and display them, with no intention of disassembling them ever. But thats just me. Once you finish building your lego sets, do you occasionally disassemble them and rebuild?

I do disassemble for several reasons:

I don't have enough space to keep everything on display.
I enjoy the physical activity of building (and to a lesser degree, disassembling) and so if I never disassemble, I can never re-assemble, unless I'm constantly buying more, which I don't have space for.
I enjoy taking a set and trying to design/build and share alt builds.
I have a vague feeling that it's not good for the bricks to be constantly assembled. I may be wrong.
I don't like how assembled sets will get dusty.

I’ve recently started on a major deconstruction of my built sets, mainly as they were just sitting in my shed and not really getting seen or displayed. On top of that I also have too many sets I’ve not even opened and built yet.
I’m now very glad I kept original boxes (so many boxes!) and plastic bags as I’m disassembling in reverse order and trying to store as originally packaged. My current intention is just to keep my CMFs and Creator Modulars built and on display plus one or two favourites like Saturn V and the Apollo moon lander.
That does mean I’ll just have a garage full of boxed Lego instead but one day I’ll have a dedicated Lego room and then maybe then I‘ll get to rebuild and get my Lego city properly set up.

Reluctantly, yes, just for more effective storage. I still haven't got a proper storage system working, so often when I remove models from display I'll segment them just to get them to fit into a box better. I have a LOT of proper, complete disassembling to do soon as I get things more organised. But there's a few things I'll keep in one place - definitely Medieval Market Village, because I want to build a castle to go with it...

I do dismantle sets eventually, when I run out of space for new sets. But I don't enjoy it, plus it sometimes aggravates my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Right now I’m limiting myself to one metal cabinet for display. It’s chaos.

When it fills up I move most to storage (most are disassembled) and then I start building again.

But i’ll buy another cabinet eventually...

When I was packing up my apartment for a move to my house several years ago, my wife took great delight in helping me disassemble my various Lego sets and pack them away. To this day, she tells me how much fun that was. Guess who's not a big fan of my Lego collection...

I keep the big sets that are on display built: my UCS sets (too big to want to dissemble), Technic (too much of a pain in the neck to dissemble), Creator Expert Vehicles, and a couple odds and ends like my Employee gifts and Vestas Wind Turbine. My City layout is up permanently - the decision to build a table, rather than use folding tables that are easy to dismantle, was intentional. Most of my Modulars are in the layout, with the exception of Market Street, Downtown Diner, and Corner Garage, which eventually will get rotated in.

All my other sets are dissembled as there's no more room. I have big plastic tubs that I got at the Container Store that fit perfectly underneath the table. My dissembled sets are each in their own plastic bags with their instructions, and are roughly grouped in those bins together: one bin is space, another castle, etc. Occasionally I'll pull something out to build it and leave it on display for a bit then dissemble it and put it back. The only sets that are permanently built are my display sets and my city.

I do.

About 50% due to lack of display space so things get rotated around. Other sets get built once then broken down into the general parts collection for MOCing.

Like most people, I have too much Lego (all things being relative) and too little space. My small Lego "City" of modulars (PC, PS, PR, DO, BB, AS, DD & CG) is permanently up on two Ikea tables in my study, with BS to be added soon, along with a load of City, TLM and other vehicles and small sets.

Additional to that I have some shelving for favourite sets, such as Benny's Spaceship, the Minecraft Microworld sets, Bag End, Mini Cooper, Ideas Treehouse, Exosuit, Millennium Falcon, Slave One, Destiny's Bounty, some Architecture sets and some minifigs etc. Finally, #918, Ideas Saturn V & Wall-E are on my desk.

The rest are all bagged and boxed up in hobby crates under the Ikea tables, mainly sorted by theme and a couple for generic bricks, PaB and spares. I've also got the Rollercoaster, Ninjago City (never built!) and Ninjago City Docks (never built) in my cupboard. It's a nightmare! ;-)

I do sometimes rotate sets from display, for example, I wanted to display the Creator Mini Copper, so my Creator VW Camper had to make way.

Like most, I would love a nice, large Lego room, so that I can do proper justice to a Lego City and also a Minecraft world, as well as displaying other favourite sets, but that is just dream for the time-being. I'll be ready when it happens though! ;-)

I wish I could figure out a great way to display more of the larger ships that I really love. Like Benny's Spaceship (#70816), the UCS sets I have (#7191 #7181 ##75095 #75060), or even medium sized ships like Poe's X-Wing #75102 and the Guardian's ships #76081 and #76107. These are all awesome models, but the wing spans on them all take up so much of my limited display space, that I really struggle with being able to keep them together and on display. Of all those I listed, I only have two currently built for that exact reason.

I disassembled my Star Wars fleet in 2008 so that I could put it away (had to convert the Lego room/office into a nursery). In 2013 when I took all that stuff out again, and sorted it, I realized I had way more moc-building material than I expected!

Lego is for building, so shred those sets and build new mocs! Face it, you're not going to sell the sets, and you can always rebuild them later.

Most of my sets get parted out, except the Disney, trains, SCs, which I try to keep as sets.

I build every set I get, regardless of what it is, because you never know what different techniques may be used in it. You can usually learn something from building most sets.

But once built, only a select few sets stay built (modulars, winter village, other display models). The rest get disassembled and sorted into my parts collection.

I never did until recently. It’s amazing how good of a feeling it is to have the open space (that of course is back filled with new stuff) and to be organized in and of itself and put away sets that perhaps have been out for a long time.
