No size limits or extra fees in my store.  I sell for the hobby and fun.

Tonight back to sorting the 6 41348 and actually making progress but nowhere near finishing, wanted to get the last of the packaging thrown out/recycled before pickup Thursday morning and open the next set to dispose of that packaging

@CCC you're right, average lot values would avoid pain in the butt orders, but I fear they'd also prevent small lower value orders I don't mind

Part out report: Just stocked into my store 4 copies of Shimmer & Shine Sparkle Spa
Item No: 70837-1.  Lots of trans-blue and white pieces.

12 lots $148.58 - very happy about that order. Was for all I had of 4 Ninjago figures, 6 CMFs (those including but not limited to TLNM) and 2 small parts

While I had the $, I paid my BL fees early and finally restocked on size 0 bubblemailers and will get 2x3 bags next.

sales tax is exempted on purchases for resale, anyone here ever done that? I haven't, it seems like a small amount compared to paperwork and risk of doing something wrong. also, buying sets and selling parts makes it hard to determine the price of a particular item including for this reason.

  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
Opened 4 #70347 because it had a part an order was short on, will part out the rest after finishing 41348 but that ain't happening yet.

    shopped for 2x3 bags tonight
eBay threerb, who I got some bubblemailers from before, has prices a bit better than the rest at various quantity levels.

my last purchase was 5000 nearly 3 years ago, which tells me I don't more and probably don't need that many so I went with 2000.

The implication is that you will then charge the appropriate sales tax to in-state customers. Yes, you will have to get a reseller tax-exempt permit and do annual/quarterly paperwork. The bigger problem may be that the usual clearance places (Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc.) are NOT set up for tax-exempt sales (though Amazon Business is).

Saw those on clearance and thought about it, but the figs just don't carry a lot of value.

I agree the figures aren't great but the vast amount of trans-clear blue parts made it worth the price.  Especially the trans-clear blue shields.

I am set up for collecting sales tax, I just don't use the ability to get exemptions on resale purchases that comes with it.
I wonder if it's allowed for purchases intended for resale out of state, especially since nearly all of my sales are, if it would look suspicious
Target fine print (at least for Redcard) lets them deny purchases intended for resale, and losing the Redcard discount would take away much of the advantage of bothering.

Yes, allowed for all purchases intended for resale no matter where (even international). Technically, you're probably already supposed to register with NYS & collect/remit sales tax for in-state purchases, assuming you don't qualify for the "garage sale" exception (not engaged in business, selling for three or less days per year, annual sales $600 or less).

Keep in mind that with Lego purchasing Bricklink, the recent widespread adoption of
"marketplace facilitator" sales tax collection means that sooner rather than later Bricklink will automatically start collecting and remitting sales tax on your behalf, probably even for in-state sales, like Amazon, etc. started doing for marketplace sellers.

Target's tax-exempt application process seems to exclude resellers (only government/non-profit)apparently they don't allow exemptions for resellers at all.

I never got any #70837 but I'm not sure if that means I rejected it at low value or just didn't see any on sale.
checking part values now I get a total of $91.87, part ratio 2.43 if half off ($35) with 8% sales tax. not great, not horrible.
70824 is worse, 70827 and 70828 are better, 70838 better still
besides an academic exercise, this was useful for updating prices on lots already in my inventory

    -

got my delivery of 2x3 bags. feels good to be restocked. unnecessarily large packaging besides costing more has items sliding around empty space which could damage them (though jamming into too small a container could also beat them up). bubblemailers I can fold over and tape down more easily

did some sorting of parts without my computer on. good when I have some time but not enough that I want to get started on a computer project. I can get a lot done without having to reference the BrickLink database or something like that.

finally finished sorting and listing 41348!
was too sick to go out today especially given winter weather but well enough to work around the house and keep it clean.

Split my White Plate Not Modified bin into Rectangular and Nonrectangular. Put black parts labeled Vehicle in with the wheels and tires. There was plenty of room in the wheel/tire bin and the 'black, other' bin was getting jumbled. Also put wheel holders here rather than in plate modified because the latter is packed. Those are the only two times I've relabeled bins in awhile. Some other bins are fairly empty, but I don't want to condense two such tubs in case I late get more parts in those categories.

The last batch of labels I bought don't peel off cleanly. The ones before that did, useful for reusing a bag or moving the label to a different container. So for light colored pieces I may write directly on the bag. With dark parts the white label helps contrast with the contents.

threw out a Sharpie with a tip too worn to make useful lines, often that seems to happen before they run out of ink or is that just me?

opened 20 #41451 next. just dumped the parts into bins so i can get the packaging out for garbage and recycling pickup in the morning. parts for later sorting, will see how much later that is. picked that set because it's on top of the pile, most in the way, sell newer parts before they drop further, hopefully.

I would like Congress by law or the courts to call that states interfering with interstate commerce. Whether or not that happens, wait and see.
That's what I thought about Target, thanks for confirmation and details

The Flesh colors have for at least a few weeks now been renamed Nougat like TLG does. Other colors with different BL names appear unchanged.
Maybe it's to avoid offending people about skin color. Perhaps it's due to Medium Nougat (Medium Dark Flesh) being used for a lot of other things like that 1x1 round chocolate chip cookie tile.

    Sorting 41451 extremely quickly.
it has brick built figures, which can be annoying, but motivates me to sort a lot of other things to get at parts in the figure.

also I've been listing some lots right after I sort them, to save time once done with sorting. moving fast enough I doubt I'll forget what I already listed.

At least set up Amazon Business & WM accounts with the reseller exemption certificate. Don't know if the WM Lego limits (2 per set per order) will apply, but on Amazon Business there are no special restrictions.

Out-of-state Internet/mail-order sales were mostly tax-free since  the 1992 Supreme Court ruling in Quill v. North Dakota (based on the commerce clause). However, the Supreme Court recently reversed this in 2018 in South Dakota v. Wayfair . That's what's allowing states to require sales tax on out-of-state purchases, though each state sets it own limits for when a retailer/'marketplace facilitator' becomes responsible. For example. in California it's at least $500k of previous/current-year deliveries into California even if you have no other connection to the state.

I had only 19x worth of some 41451 pieces. LEGO goofs so rarely maybe I spilled a few parts or didn't notice they didn't pour out of the bag
one was for a figure and wasn't something I already had in inventory. So I listed 19 figures, and listed as parts what I did have from the 20th
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
took a few days to finish 41451 but that's working at faster than light speed compared to how long it took me to finish the last set
part out ratio 3.6 even after lowering prices
last set ended up at 2.41

I still have nearly 2700 3x5 bags left from the 5000 I bought about 2 years ago

As for storage bins containing rectangular or not rectangular, a square is technically a special kind of rectangle so 1x1's etc go in the rectangle bin.

Opened 6 #41453 for later sorting. Hopefully not too much later. Again, motivated to get packaging out for garbage/recycling pickup the next morning

Working from home helps control the spread of infectious diseases but that's what BrickLink store owners are doing anyway.

So we should be fine as long as the postal system is running

I already have more than enough inventory and mailing supplies, and much can be ordered online, so I wouldn't have to go out for that.
I often leave things out for the deliveryperson to pick up. I might pack something after they come but before the post office closes - if I don't go out, that thing is at worst mailed the next day.

I handle collectibles with clean hands on a clean surface anyway.

It's perhaps been surprising that it's only really been this week where business has dropped off a cliff, and even then the end of March and April are traditionally my quietest time of year so the impact, although unwelcome, is not as severe as it could have been. The terrible Christmas, and almost certain significant delay to being able to take my physical stall on the road, will have far bigger consequences.
I have only this week bought a hydrosonic cleaner from Amazon, which should allow me to clean parts much more quickly and effectively. Not an issue for my parts store, which is almost entirely from brand new sets and stored in clean Really Useful drawers, but I will go through my used sets and give all the parts a thorough going over.
Again, as long as the postal service is operating, I will be as well.

My used parts are from long ago and sealed in bags so ought to be fine with regards to this. I focus on new anyway, like you. Even if I was interested in picking up additional used inventory I'd avoid that for now.

The facts seem unclear exactly how long the virus can survive on surfaces, but the answer seems to be just a few days at most. So something going through the mail should be safe.

Finally started sorting the 6 41453 I opened 2 weeks ago. Made quick progress on it and happy about that but won't finish it same night

Has anyone noticed an actual uptick in online sales these past 2 weeks? My store has gotten a lot more traffic, my ebay auctions are going for more than expected, and my buy it nows haven't lasted super long either. Is this an isolated occurrence or are people loading up to have something to do when quarantined?
  • DB361DB361 Member Posts: 299
^ Hard to tell for me. Bricklink is down slightly on what it was doing in Jan/Feb, but then traditionally March and April are my quietest months anyway, and this March so far is definitely up on last year. Ebay however has been doing well, probably as I spent several days listing all of my sets that I'd normally have for my physical stall on there on top of the higher end sets I'd have on Bricklink anyway. Still hate ebay in so many ways, but at least it is getting the revenue in.

It's been fairly slow in my store even though I've added over 3,000 parts of late.

    Bozbricks@Bricklink
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
I haven't noticed much change in my sales level, but unfortunately it's a small sample size.
@samiam391 mentioned adding inventory - that drives more sales whatever the reason. Being at home because of the virus is one thing that would give us more time to list parts. Whether that actually means listing more parts is another question.

    Also:
One address I thought was Zone 5 was actually Zone 6. Apparently that changes slightly as well as the postage rates for each zone. The difference was only 9c but I wanted to avoid that in the future on principle. So check https://postcalc.usps.com/DomesticZoneChart rather than checking zone each time. The Excel table output can be copy/pasted effectively, and then I tweaked that table to make a more compact screenshot.

One customer specifically said his order was to get a missing piece for something he's building while stuck at home. Was too late to mail same day, once I got home, had something to eat and actually packed it. Wasn't otherwise going out yet and didn't think I could squeeze in a special trip.

Desperately trying to figure out if the new UK restrictions will mean I have to close my business temporarily. Mainly am I still allowed to take parcels to the Post Office? Will the Post Office still even be open? Not found anything of help at all so far, so I have a nasty feeling I may be in for next to no sleep tonight!

The post office will still be open but it is not clear f you are allowed to go. Only if it is for your job and you cannot do it from home. I guess it is don to interpretation - is bricklink your job or not?

  • Mr_CrossMr_Cross Member Posts: 1,713
As it's not my job, I've ended all my eBay listings. Lots of Bricklink stores I had items in baskets in have closed because of the current situation.
I don't know what to think either, we should all probably just stop buying stuff and sending stuff through the post.
It's a containment issue, and yes, you can advise your customers to quarantine the parcel for a few days and then wash the contents, but honestly, if people didn't have the sense to stay home this weekend, I think you are probably fighting a losing battle.
I'm trying not to buy anything, but I know that if I see a bargain on something that I've been looking for, for a long time, I will probably take the plunge and buy it! I'll try to be sensible about it and do the isolation thing with it though.

Me too, I'm not selling anything right now. It is not an issue with contamination / quarantining pats or sets, just that I think that it is irresponsible to be queuing in the Post Office to post packages that are not really necessary, when there may well be other people that need to use counter services more urgently.

I guess if other sellers use online postage and drop items into a post box, then it is slightly different. Although all mail needs to be delivered of course.

  • rbozarthrbozarth Member Posts: 94
Good thing I am allowed to drop off all packages as I use a pre-paid system.  Most of the time I don't even have to get out of the car.  Orders have been very slow but I am staying open for those that may have a need for that "certain" part.  No minimum buy for my store either.

Thankfully a bit more clarification has come up throughout the day, especially on a Q&A on BBC News

"I sell online and post my goods. Can I still go the Post Office?

Post offices are among the shops and outlets which the government has said will remain open.

However, if you visit a post office, make sure you follow the government guidelines on social distancing. This includes staying 2m away from staff and other customers, and not gathering in large groups.

Shops and post offices are also required to practise queue control - outside their premises if necessary."

So, as long as things stay like that, I will keep my stores open, and send out parcels, but less frequently. If I can only make 2 trips a week rather than the 5 or 6 I'd normally make, I feel like that is a fair compromise. If I can also go at what traditionally would be quieter times (so far achieved - I was the only one in there today), and adhere strictly to the 2m rule and all the other precautions that we currently have in our day to day lives, then I think it'll be OK. Of course I didn't want to step one foot out of the door until I was absolutely certain that it was the right and proper thing to do - cue huge amounts of info gathering overnight and only got 1 hour of sleep last night!

not sure how it works in the UK but in the US you can leave items by the mail slot for the carrier to pick up. This goes will with printing mailing labels online - can you do that?

2 meters huh? I see 6 feet all over the place here which is only slightly shorter, both work as an easy to remember figure.

Seems pretty safe to stay open, and both buyer and seller might be looking for something to do at home.

Reached 1000 feedback - had noticed I was close

Had a large fairly high value order today, wouldn't have had time to mail it same day even if I made a trip to a post office
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
Finally finished sorting my 6 41453's - stopped and went to bed in the middle of that last night but left the parts on my desk so it made sense to finish in the morning. Part out ratio was 2.7619.
3 #41452 and 4 #70347 I already unboxed are next on the agenda. the former was a recent purchase on top of the pile, the latter was dug out of the backlog because it had a piece another order was short on
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
Sorted 41452 in one session last night. even for a small quantity of a small set that's still quicker than I usually move.
JFC so many brick built figures
Was already tired so listed the pieces in the morning. Part out ratio 3.2284.
I liked listing the Unikitty sets right after each other so I could offer similar pieces and larger quantities of the same lots

  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
Sorted and listed the 70347, got part out ratio 3.1667
I parted out another 4 a couple years ago, and like any set I listed before it's easier because each lot is already listed in my store and I already have parts bags labeled (unless I happened to sell out of it in the meantime)

still have some other Nexo in the part out pile, listed a bunch from #70350
updated a lot of Nexo prices including on the shields
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
Last few days at least I'm being productive staying home (sometimes I stay home to get stuff done and screw around anyway, even now I wonder if I could be going out more)

continued listing 70350 part by part - the bags were long since opened, I don't think everything was there (perhaps I opened them when an order was short). sorted a lot of my old listed but not organized parts. by definition, they'd sat around so price cuts were often in order. like I often do, I updated pricing on other colors of a part while I was at it.

I previously avoided '13' in prices - I'm not superstitious, but customers might've been and it was whimsical. I started using that number for more flexibility in pricing. Also, while of course I kept used prices below new, I made some of them father below new.
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
    Parted out 2 #70362 - ratio 3.222
Next up is 4 #70827 - on top of my pile of boxes, want to get the empty boxes and duplicate manuals out with recycling pickup Thursday morning. Already deboxed sets aren't as urgent because garbage such as empty part bags gets picked up every week and it's already taking up less space.
However, 5 unboxed #70838 is the only other TLM2 I have left, so might do those after the 70827's.
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
Finally sold the #21312 I had sitting in inventory. that was real popular when it came out but did not remain a hot item. basically at cost, but it's gone, and buyer placed a simple high value parts order with it.
didn't get far with sorting the 70287's yet

64 lots $200 ! even my biggest orders rarely reach $100 !. 244 back in 2017 was my record, all minifigures. Most of my largest orders were loads of figs, this was all parts, and I have gotten some $100 or so parts orders

Then 59 lots $9 - Mom thinks I'm crazy for not wanting to spend that much time picking for that little money. Not so helpful for getting rid of inventory. Maybe it would lead to larger orders, but I don't recall that happening before.

I avoided a value per lot minimum because I didn't want to discourage small orders but I recently had an idea - a handling fee of enough to make the order 25c per lot (for the order above, $5.75) or my current fixed amount, whatever is greater.
  • rbozarthrbozarth Member Posts: 94
I just don't understand charging handling fees but to each his own I guess.  I've mentioned before that I run my store for and to support the hobby.  Anyway just my two cents.  Happy building everyone during these troubled times.  My store is here to serve you.

I do want to keep my pricing simple, one reason I haven't added a fee for large low value orders.
I need a handling fee of some sort because I don't have an order minimum, otherwise on tony orders I lose money after PayPal fees and packaging material. (Since I started buying bubblemailers in bulk years ago I don't need to charge for that)
  • KingAlanIKingAlanI Member Posts: 2,355
My store has been relatively busy the past couple weeks - averaging a couple small orders a day when I had been getting 1 about every other day
I'd guess is due to people staying at home. That includes me - I've had more time to add inventory and do price cuts, and some of my sales include those items.
54 lots $110 was real nice - not only the raw numbers but the fact that many of those items had been sitting in my inventory for years
  • rbozarthrbozarth Member Posts: 94
