    Agreed. I have most the Fair Ground items, but Roller Coaster is a pass. I have a number of modulars, but Assembly Square is a hard pass.

    See, I think Assembly Square is the best of the entire line (though I don't yet have the Corner Garage).  The Parisian Restaurant was my all-time favorite set until it was dethroned, and that was by AS - and I built a lot of sets in between. I will say, due to its price point, we didn't sell a ton of them when I worked at Lego, but it's a wonderful set, even with the high price tag. I don't disagree with the parallel to the Roller Coaster, as that's the one Fairground set I don't have myself - honestly, it just takes up too much room, in all three dimensions at that. At least while the UCS Falcon has a massive footprint, it's not particularly tall.

    This is clearly further evidence of why I am not in marketing. :p

    It seems the most interesting 'gateway drug', IMHO. Like, I've never really been drawn to the modulars, but I've considered grabbing this one as kind of an 'all in one' backdrop for setting up my superhero minifigs on. It seems to me a much cheaper option than buying up several separate models for the same effect.

    Things that are cheap(er) make much better gateway drugs. Lower price of entry. For me it was discounted Pet Shops.

    That is why the first one is always free, to get people hooked...or at least in the movies.

    I don't know anything about marketing, either.  How and why the Tower Bridge has such an unnaturally long life mystifies me.

    But... I trust this group of LEGO marketing people to continue to sell me everything I didn't know I wanted, but that I cannot live without.

    I do see what you mean - like how one might buy a starter set for the Ninjago spinners before any individual products.

    In 2012 or 2013 a former frequent of these forums named @LegoFanTexas posted a picture of the shopping cart full of clearace he had gathered. It sparked a great outrage on behalf of the mythical Timmy who was denied by the evil reseller crowd. It was a wild time for sure. If you want some good laughs I suggest going all the way back to the origins of this thread and skimming through some of it.

    Little Timmy started out as an excuse to buy LEGO for yourself ("This one is for Little Timmy ..."), but then quickly became the child losing out by not being able to get Sun promos, then missing out at general clearances.

    Timmy should have learned by now to get what he wants when he wants, although he is probably mid-teens now so may well be leaving lego behind for a while. But have you met his little sister Tammy ...

    Man all that seems like yesterday. I actually own the 4th post in this 668 page thread.  Long since our of the reeling game, and my own LEGO collecting has gone down about 80%, but I still lurk these days.  This thread always catches my eye when it has activity.

    Here we are in 2019 and apart from a brief few months when they updated to modern minifigs and adjusted the price its still on shelves.

    @Bumblepants ; I see that you posted a meme. Im.sure it is allowed seeing that this thread is just one big meme ;) I don't know if there will some sort of cosmic explosion for doing so or if it is the same as two streets with the same name intersecting one another....Maybe you have just reached the nexus of the universe.

    Considering how hit & miss the last few 'soon to be retired' lists have been, I'll take most of what is listed with a grain of salt, though some of them are no-brainers, it's a surprise some of them hadn't already been retired.

    I’ve found his sources to be pretty accurate in the past.  I’m a little surprised that #21309 Saturn V is going— it had seemed to have pretty big appeal amongst folks who aren’t usually buying Lego for themselves.  Maybe TLG made a ton of sets in the subsequent waves of production and feel like they have sold as much as is justified by the shelf space allocation it takes up.  

    Definitely glad I have my #70620 and #70657 tucked away, although my long planned Ninjago City expansion layout has taken a back seat to a long list of other projects.  

    I wonder why Aragog’s Lair #75950 is the only HP set from the original books/movies to be retiring...I wonder if it has the potential that #4865 demonstrated in the aftermarket... for such a small set it sure sold well after retirement.  Although it did have Narcissa Malfoy which I believe was an exclusive fig, while the neither of the figs in the AL set are...

    ^^ I doubt it will be to the same extent, part of the big draw of #4865 was likely the figures with Narcissa being exclusive, Aragogs lair only has Ron and Harry and both of those figures appear in the same outfit in other sets.

    I do wonder how much data mining LEGO will be able to do with the Bricklink sales data.  They should be able to figure out pretty quickly what sets and parts are in high demand.  Wonder how that will play out?  More reissued sets?  Reintroduction of parts that are not in production any more but sell well?  I could see it causing definite uncertainty going forward for resellers.

    Uncertainty in some areas, and probably better protection in other areas.  

    For instance, I could see LEGO scarfing up all of a certain set if controversy occurs.

    Like I noted in another thread, this just seems 'off' to me. I just see LEGO meddling too much into something good, or worse yet-like others noted- using it to trash the secondary market.
    I guess I just see more negatives than positives to this, especially after seeing LEGO's 'improving' of the VIP point system.

    I think it is a negative, as a single company now controls the primary market and is a major player in the secondary market. It also gives them access to a list of resellers, and they can stop those sellers from purchasing direct from LEGO, stopping access to exclusives.

    I'm not a huge fan of the acqusition. I've felt in the last 4 years, TLG has been focused on making it more expensive to be an AFOL with the discontinuation of discounts on Creator Expert sets, elimination of discounts connected to Brick conventions, banning of resellers. I understand they want to have enough products for many consumers but could do that with purchase limits. I'm not using Bricklink as much lately because I don't have a lot of time/space to MOC but I think it's a pretty good platform currently.

    Yes, both The Brick Fan and zusammengebaut had lists of sets that are going to be retired. Many of them have been on sale this week.

    It doesn't say retired, but it's OOS and may not return, as usual during this time of year for many of the sets being retired.
