That's just amazing. It has been said before, but how does he come up with it?! Wow.

The layout at Steam was massive this year. Some interesting new modules as well. The colossal beast in the corner was 7ft tall and rammed with balls!

I was a small part of that display, along with four others.

That thing was absolutely insane. Each wheel turns, lifting the balls to the top, which then run down round the tracks on the outside. Not only that, but the entire thing turns as this happens! Once the balls reach floor level, there's a 3 or 4ft high ball pump to get them back to table level!

Apparently the whole thing uses 10 XL motors (2 in the ball pump and 8 for the rest of it), and the weight of the lego that moves is about 50kg, with the base that supports it weighing about 15kg.

I thought the balls took about 45 minutes getting around the whole circuit, mainly because of that module.
  • HuwHuw Administrator Posts: 7,116
It was about 25 -- 7 or so round the rest of the circuit then 15+ in it.

LOL, she does have her serious face on! But again the GBC display was the highlight of her trip and the area she wanted to head to first

Any thoughts on the suitability of 42078 Mack Anthem as a GBC parts pack? Currently 44% off RRP on Amazon....
  • PaperballparkPaperballpark Member Posts: 4,270
Not built it or taken it apart recently, so I forget which parts are in it, but 44% off is a bargain!

I don't own this set, but a quick look at the parts list shows a good amount of parts usable for GBC.  I think any of the bigger Technic sets like this at 40%+ off is a great deal.

Also the GBC layout at STEAM 2019 looked great!

Sadly it’s only slightly discounted on US Amazon. 😐

Those looking for a heavily discounted GBC parts pack might also want to consider 42082 Rough Terrain Crane which is currently 48% off RRP at Amazon's UK site:

@Astrobricks Amazon UK will generally ship to the US. I haven't ordered anything lately, and the days of $5 shipping are done, but if you are ordering both of those sets or multiples it might well be worth it.

Given all your GBC-related activity it's hard to believe that you couldn't use a couple more....

They're both still in the boxes - I bought one almost a year ago! Not had chance to build many sets this year. Plus I'm not currently working, so can't really just splash money on a set I already have two of!

I just realized I haven't checked in here in a while, how is everyone doing?  Any new GBC modules built or being worked on?
  • HuwHuw Administrator Posts: 7,116
All good here, thanks. I've been playing with Spike Prime and attending Zoom calls with other members of the Facebook GBC group, which have been quite good fun.

Anyone else been doing fun GBC stuff lately?

I finished up a couple modules two weeks ago, but am awaiting a curtain to arrive so I can get better photos/videos.

I've also placed part orders to build Akiyuki's new module and am hoping that the order from Germany doesn't get delayed along it's way to me.

Been awhile since I saw any new GBC stuff pop up.  Figured it's likely because we haven't had any good opportunities for people to show off, so new stuff hasn't been coming out as much as people are waiting to show off new builds once cons and gatherings are back on... with that said, I just saw that Akiyuki had released a new GBC module on his YT channel a few days ago, and figured I'd post it here for anyone that hadn't seen in yet. (It's as great as one would expect, and I highly recommend watching till the second half of the video, as there is some special insanity going on towards the end.)

Right?  Every time he comes out with something new, I'm like "Okay, there's no way this is going to blow me away as much as the last one did." And every single time, I'm 100% wrong.

I love Wintergatan!  He is actually in the middle of a like... 3 year long process of building a better, most robust version of his marble machine, and he regularly posts videos about his progress on it.  Absolutely fascinating, and there's some super creative stuff he has done with it, both from just a raw creativity standpoint and from an engineering standpoint.  Will absolutely admit that a lot of my fascination with his marble machine and my fascination with GBC stem from the same places :D

Bonkers! There's even some Lego in there, clearly,  at 01:29 and again at 02:55 for a few seconds! :-)

He uses Technic beams and pins as his “piano roll” to program the tune :D

I've seen the tile for his videos many many times, but have never stopped to watch one until now. Absolutely fantastic!

I made the decision at one point to not open the GBC side of the hobby so I could afford other sets I like as well. It's things like this that make me think of reconsidering that decision!

GBC is something that I would absolutely love to get into one day. Not now though. One day. :-)
