Had a wander around the Cardiff Lego shop today and from what I saw I think they did a good job with this line. In particular the little Shrimper boat is a cracking little set at a reasonable price.

Saw some sets in John Lewis today. These are really, really nice sets... wish I could afford them all!
  • klintonklinton Member Posts: 1,256
Aye, they're top notch. I've only grabbed the boat and the diner so far, but I freaking love them! I wanted to grab the school right away too, but it seems that most stores here have sold out of it or didn't carry it.

Lego really went all out with these. They have that polish to them that is normally reserved for the Lego Movie sets or Creator Expert. I think the only one that doesn't really grab me is the lab, but I suppose that's really only because it feels slightly out of place, being a vignette among more robust models. It looks to be well detailed for what it is.

I just wish Lego would announce their plans for the juice bar set. I'm hesitating to buy these in case it ends up being a GWP with a requisite spend on Hidden Side sets.

^That's the only reason I haven't picked up any sets yet. I want to see what we have to spend for the juice bar, that and the other LEGO promos haven't been a must get for me so far.

I've started using them in CT because they recently passed a law that charges $0.10 per plastic bag at all retailers.

The few retailers that I have visited that have paper bags as an alternative are charging for those as well, even though they were not part of the new tax. Good for the environment, but a genuine pain in the ass at Walmart, where they have checkouts that were specifically designed for using plastic bags. They will need to rip out all those little turntables that had bags on them, because without the bags they don't work. Maybe they'll do like Aldi, and replace the turntable with a shopping cart.

Same here in Chicago - my tote gets a good amount of use, as does the large reusable LEGO bag that I purchased in-store when the tote wasn't large enough

Nothing at all, but I have more then enough stuff to do that. With a move coming up and a hopefully short time at my next situation I have to spend my money more carefully.

Wondering if you could just 'scan' an image with the app rather than needing to scan the physical set? Eg hold the app up to an online review.
I just tried it with this picture of the bus from the Brickset review: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brickset/48487462856/in/photostream/lightbox/

It works in so far as it recognises the set and puts it in the virtual 3D world, but the first thing it asks you to do is spin the colour wheel on the physical bus to make it yellow, which obviously I can't do... so you fall down pretty quickly ;-)

First time poster here, cant get the cursor on the white field when typing my answer so hope its still readable despite looking like i just repost a citation...

Watched Jangbricks review of the Haunted Highschool and it looks like its possible to just scan the colour (or possibly both colour and shape is needed), 22:50 into the video. So once bought, built and played with, one knows which angles of the build are needed and which pieces needs to be scaned in order to continue gameplay. Perhaps keeping these pieces (or possibly even just access to the correct colour) available for scaning when playing will be enought to be able to play, and the rest can be dismantled and used for parts.

The pictures might have to be in 1:1 size though, since it seems like at times one has to scan the ”set” with a minifigure in a specific position, i.e a minifigure (N.B. ANY minifigure, as long as it is the minifigures front towards the camera, it seems) so if the picture of the set is not the right size to place a minifigure on top of it might not work...or one could possibly also fiddle with the pictures on different distances from the phone/tablet in order for it to look the right size relative to the minifigure.

When you start a post with a quote, just make sure you start typing your own text below the quote boxes before attempting to edit the quoted fields. If you do anything in those fields before establishing a new body of text below, it gets stuck in the quote fields. If that does happen again, just delete the entire quote and requote the desired post and start again. :D

It seems LEGO is including these extremely cool 4”x6” Hidden Side lenticular cards with online orders.  Lenticular anything is fun :)

Can anybody confirm if this is just for the USA region?
  • mattytreksmattytreks Member Posts: 205
@richo- yes, would be great to hear from our international buyers on the availability of this unannounced giveaway.

Ok a related note, I have at least one extra of these lenticular cards that would be available to send (for free) to any international non-US address – provided its confirmed that this is not readily available to international folks from LEGO directly.  Only other catch is that interested parties would need to pay shipping costs, which I hope wouldn’t be too much for a thin package :)

Hidden Side fans, you’ve been put on notice.  Very cool little set this is...

At $50, this is a very attainable amount – especially given it’s $50 spent on anything, and not specifically just for Hidden Side product.

Has anyone motorised the train yet? I haven't built the set yet but have got in mind to add a motor and think I've got a decent plan using the PF train motors but always curious to see what other people have come up with.

Is #70418 supposed to connect to another set? There's an unused clip built into the left side of the model that makes me suspect as much. At first I assumed that it must attach to the school (like how #41235 and #41236 both attach to #41232 ), but there are no viable points to clip it to.

Is there a set that it's supposed to link to?

If it has a friction pin, then it might be a modular.

No, no. It's just a clip (part #4533772 ). I'm assuming it might connect to one of the machines on the train or the bus? Or it has some sort of in app significance (like the clips in the library of the school who's use wasn't clear from the set instructions)?

I'm just curious, as it's clearly there for something. :p

To hold the pizza or conical flask?
It's probably fully something basic like that, tbh (although, the flask has a specific perch already). Maybe it's for her phone? It's just set at the usual height for something that wants to connect to another build. Maybe the lab is set to get an extension in wave 2?

I've managed a very basic motor rig on the train, it's a little clumsy as I didn't want to loose the wings on the main loco so I've got battery box in the last wagon, receiver in the middle and motor on the loco. There's some unfortunate wires showing as a result but I need it working for this weekend coming so that had to do. More unfortunate is that the changes to the middle wagon mean that the app no longer scans it.

Might try to rejig it into a better setup later but for now at least it runs, and my two year old thinks it's the most amazing thing ever! (if only everyone was so easily impressed)

I noticed this weekend the Frisco Lego Store was deliberately displaying all their Hidden Side sets with the back of the packaging that shows the bricks rather than the super stylized front. Anyone else notice this at other Lego Stores?

As we discussed on Saturday, hunt out the new Powered Up system, does away with the receiver module and one of the wires. I reckon you could fit it all in the main locomotive and retain the moving wings

I suspect that how this theme is received will teach TLG a lot about how far they can push variations on their packaging house style. Mind you, what confuses or puts consumers off can shift over time. It used to be that the alternative models on the back of the box were a selling point (or so I assume, as they were standard for ages), but then TLG started getting calls about how they didn't get the instructions for those models, and changed the boxes in response.

(Digression: I've often wondered why that became an issue for parents when it did. Maybe trends in kids' toy packaging generally shifted to exactly match what the in-box instructions describe? Or maybe there's now a generation of young parents who played as much, or more, with compatible brands, so they're not familiar with Lego packaging conventions like "the pics on the back are just for inspiration"...)

The other interesting thing about the impact of the theme is that someone in another thread mentioned that parents they knew were reluctant to buy it because they like Lego as an alternative to screen-based activities. If that's a bigger turn-off to parents than the illustrated boxes, then there's not a lot to be done about it, because the fact phones are significant to play is shown prominently on both sides.

I dunno. I really hope they get some good word of mouth on these sets and that they do well at Christmas (festive upgrades to phones/tablets might mean people who've been holding off on purchasing because of app compatibility to do then), because it's a very appealing theme and it's kind of fun to see illustration art on the boxes as well as the usual photos.

It's been so long since I've built a Lego train that I'd forgotten just how large they scale. What looked like a minor side build in pictures turns out to be nearly as large as the diner. The price point for this set makes sense to me now. :p

I tried out the app last day (tedium while waiting on a turkey to roast leads to desperate measures, hahaha). It's surprisingly far more in-depth than I'd assumed. It comes off as a slightly more interesting Pokemon Go, with your primary goal being to collect a slew of different fiends (with a large secondary goal being to achieve a 100% goal across the town for de-glooming). There are actual events (being October, they're currently offering a higher rate of 'rare' ghosts popping up), and daily check in bonuses. You earn various currencies used for upgrading your weaponry, life meter (well, 'battery'), shielding, ect... as well as beefing up the stats of your collected ghost minions (who you use in the surprisingly robust secondary game, actively haunting the locations).

They definitely put a lot of effort into it. It's not at all the typical merch selling vehicle that I was expecting. I don't know if I'm all that interested in actively playing it, but it was fun to tool around with for a couple hours on a lazy afternoon.

I really like the app too for the same reasons Klinton mentions above. However i’m still on iPhone 6S and the app often slows down and glitches when I find more than 2 ghosts (or a boss ghost) at a location. I guess in reality it needs better processing power than my current phone. I have a lot of rare ghosts powered up though!

The short is finally up! This is what I want to see more of from Lego for this theme. I tried out the app primarily hoping for some context for the characters and mythos, but other than J.B. herself, you really don't get to know anyone in the game. Anyhow, it's great! The old man ghost is hilarious! :D

Alas, I'm way behind technologically so it's not going to happen on this phone! It's good to hear there's a bit of depth to it, though - I would think parents would get pretty irritated with it if it was too nakedly about encouraging the purchase of more sets...

Honestly, so am I, hahaha. I used an out of commission second tier Huawei unit (thrown in a drawer after all of their back end activities came to light). My current device is woefully incapable of running it. If you're desperate to try the app though, I'm sure you can pick up a Huawei phone for dirt cheap as people move away from using them. I know I see carriers constantly trying to unload the units here. The app ran perfectly on it.

So, according to that short, all the ghostly activity is coming about because some character wants to return. And apparently Hidden Side could be a companion adventure to the Ghostbusters the way the special equipment works in this universe. Pretty sweet.

The sheer inconsistency of Android phones and how well or poorly they run these apps definitely helps illustrate why so many of LEGO's first endeavors into mobile apps were only on iPhone.

It's bewildering how many different runtime environments mobile app developers are having to optimize for anymore… definitely a big difference from video game console development, which at least for most of my lifetime has tended to revolve around three main manufacturers at a time, each with three or fewer devices on the market at any one time.

It is a shame that they didn't check with a high volume seller of tablets for kids though. They could have chosen one cheap and popular tablet used by kids (so something like an Amazon Fire or similar) and made sure the app worked with that. They could have gone even further and paired with Amazon (maybe give them an exclusive on Hidden Side for a few months) to make sure it was available on their cheap tablet. Good (or cheap) tablet access for customers, good for Fire sales.

I get the sense they keep just about everything on the 'premium' level.  (Except the computer animation for the Clutch Powers movie.)

Naturally, I would have a premium iPad or phone for my premium app for my premium toy.

    Guess which saltines I prefer?

    Yes, only the best!
