Master List of Lego Production Errors

I've been collecting for many years and occasionally I'll stumble upon an error in the instructions or a missing piece; although it's rare, it does happen. I want to create a list of Lego production errors, not only for educational purposes, but to help out others as well who may have sets with missing bags (Fire Brigade) or missprinted parts (Back to the Future) in their collection.

    Towards the end of the Grand Emporium #10211 production the large white flower used as decoration on the top floor had a mold change from hollow stud to solid stud which prevented it from connecting to the model. I think they sent out replacements if you asked? It has been a long time though so it is hard to remember how it went down.

    Steamboat Willie (21317) set has the wrong Ideas number tag on the box. It was printed as #24 on the first batch where it should have been Ideas set #25. LEGO has since corrected that error with the new batches though.

    Harley-Davidson Fat Boy (10269) set has a misprinted sticker, Milwaukee is misspelled as "Milwauke" on one of the stickers.

    Obviously the BTTF Delorean set had the misspelling on the printed brick.

    While I was still emerging from my dark ages I got #31019. I thought I was going mad as I just couldn't connect the printed 2x2 round tiles (for eyes) in the way the instructions showed. Finally discovered that I had the old tiles with the cross on the underside as opposed to an anti-stud.

    Arctic Batman vs. Mr. Freeze: Aquaman on Ice (76000) was spelled "Artic" on the box when it released.

    Back in 2002, Lego Re Released #6762 Fort Legoredo and #6764 Sheriff's Lockup. I do believe that they put the wrong horse in one of those sets and they sent out replacements. I still have the replacement horse still in it's perforated bag that Lego sent me.

    One of the more notable errors is the "Smooth Hair" Leia from the original Tantive IV. 

    Could Galidor be classified as a production error ;) ?

    Kanan Jarrus in set 75053 has a variant with black hair. Does Finch Dallow count as an error?

    Hmm, interesting. I had this happen to me, but not with those sets. When I got #10000 Guarded Inn (the first Lego Legend set), it came with a horse from the Native American Wild West sets as well as a replacement horse (ordinary white). Why was Lego messing up horse placement in sets at the turn of the century?

    Oh thank goodness. This issue wasn't as widespread as I thought it might have been!  And you may have left your horse at the KFC, but you at least had the good sense to not leave the "o", "g", and "h" at the "Drive Thru" like most people do.

    Another mistake I thought of was with the UCS Slave I . It had the word "tractor" misspelled as "tracor" on the plaque sticker. It was quickly remedied with the correct spelling in a subsequent production run.

    Not just black hair, but black facial hair as well.  The question on Finch is interesting, because normally I would say he was a variant but not an error... but they were sending out the head and helmet to people with the original pilot figure in their sets, which seems more like 'correcting an error' than a variant.

    I never noticed that when building it, although the next step makes it clear so that is probably why.

    If looked at as a one off, the green plate also looks quite strange in that angled view, almost Escher-like. The back green plate looks like it is attached to the upper section at a funny angle dipping under the dark grey plate. The black parts appear to be joined enhancing the illusion.

    31037 has a box error that calls it “Adventure Vehicules.”

    From what I can recall. They never caught this either.

    EDIT: Heck even the stock image for the box says so.

    The Qui-Gon fig in #7665 originally had the old Obi-Wan head. I believe it was corrected in later runs but I know they sent out the correct head upon request.

    Does anyone ever think that TLG could make any of these mistakes on purpose? Just to mess with us?

    It wasn't a production error but an art error, for the 2016 movie Ghostbusters Ecto-1. There was an extra Holtzmann in the artwork that wasn't in the set.

    Another box print error, the 2015 SW advent calendar claimed to have an exclusive Darth Vader minifigure in the text on the box. This apparently delayed the release in Europe.

    If bad designs being corrected are in, then of course their somewhat weak admission that maybe fans did a better job than them on the Porsche gearbox, or maybe not, ...

    I wonder if “older” sets had production issues? Or if they were just not as prevalent. Say a classic pirate set. Were pieces ever missing or instructions inaccurate?

    I doubt anyone could tell if the instructions of classic sets were inaccurate; there were so many steps per numbered instruction that to be honest, you’d be just thankful to have completed the model without error let alone spot lego’s errors!

    @piratemania7 My copy of 6270 Forbidden Island had a mistake in the instructions. On the upper level, above the prison cell, instructions showed a 1x1x5 "pillar" brick in the wrong place- the bottom of the brick was drawn so that the bottom of it was one stud closer to you, i.e. one place left and one place down, if that makes sense. This meant that the 1x1x6 arch brick that was supposed to have one end on top of this pillar was actually just floating there! I took me a bit of back and forth between the steps to figure out how it should be. I don't know if they ever corrected it, but I didn't buy that set until at least a year after it was released in the U.S. because I was overseas at the time.

    Then you'd include Shuttle adventure/expedition updates on design as well.

    Not sure if its mentioned elsewhere but in the instructions for #75894 on step 25 of bag 2 it clearly shows the bricks (and stickers) added in steps 26 and 27 already in place.



    The parts 4504375 (x2) and 6234695 (x2) are added in step 25 and parts 6170597 (x2) and the 2 stickers are added in step 27.

    I just built the limited edition 1989 Batmobile #40433 and had one of these in tan after finishing bag two:

    Two of these in yellow are used in the set, but none in tan. What's really interesting is that the parts inventory at the back of the instructions also includes it. I don't think I've come across that situation before.

    Step 11 of build 2 of #4095 calls for the 5th and 6th of part 6132373 but it's not needed and there are only 5 in the set anyway. You don't know how long I spent looking for it (this was messing with it back in 2018 so the set was already ancient and I immediately assumed a missing part) and the subsequent relief/rage when I figured out the real issue.

    Wow some really obscure but fun stuff here!  About the worst I’ve seen recently is in #30449 with a disappearing 1 round.  I’m assuming this type of error happens as they’re going over the build instructions & decide the steps should’ve appeared in a different order, yet miss a small bit on the order change.  The fact that this is noticeable & somewhat surprising, on a small set, just goes to show how incredible tight the quality control is to produce instructions & sets.

    The January 2020 catalog, you know, that thing printed on paper... page 44, the Trolls #41253 Lonesome Flats Raft Adventure: the picture diesn't show the raft at all! Eveeything else from the set seems to be there, just... no raft!

    I’m at the Mall of America Lego store and just noticed an error on the back of #21051. They call the Tokyo Skytree the “Tokyo Skyline”. Autocorrect error maybe?

    I don't think that's meant to be the name of the building… the translations agree with "skyline", and the text is all in upper case, unlike the rest of the m that actually describe buildings. 

    It is odd that they haven't named the Skytree, but I don't think that's an autocorrect mistake.

    My set 9472-1 Attack on Weathertop came with a horse with a serious printing error:As you can see, half of the head print is way off! Anyone else see anything like this? Is this worth anything?

    Not really worth much, and probably less than a decent one. Unless the bad print enhances the piece, I don't think they are that popular as curiosities these days. This as there are a huge number of parts with printing errors that seem to be sold off in bulk or otherwise leave the factory somehow. There are some sellers on BL that have 100s of bad prints like these:

    Towards the end of 2019 LEGO created a batch of 75261 Clone Scout Walker sets that included a pink cape for Darth Vader instead of black.

    If that post about it on reddit was true, then LEGO must have really screwed up - it was not only the wrong colour, but the wrong cape too being spongy vs regular starched fabric.

    An error has cropped up in #21322 where a 6066102 is shown as being used in step 308 prior to the instructions telling you to pick the part in step 309!
