I built the Great Hall last week. I usually don't enjoy the process with buildings as much as I do with vehicles. I do enjoy the end result more. In this case, the build was really fun. The only tedious bit is the windows. It's just a lot. Other than that I loved the whole process. It's such a nice set.
First image I've seen of the #75948 Clock Tower linked to the other sets:
Just an opinion, but having built the great hall, and looking at this pic too, I think the tower needs another quarter.
I'm one bag away from finishing the set now :( I thought it was Gryffindor common room, but it includes the Defense of the dark arts classroom and (off course) the hospital.
The build is very 'dense'. what I mean that there are so many indentations and curves and sort of lines in the building some bricks get bunched up together. Not necessarily a bad thing, I think the front looks pretty nice. But it does mean that there's not that much room in the rooms. I can not wait to start Moding it!!
A bit dissapointed that there's no stained glass window in the midle of the clock tower. Before I heard of the set coming out I was MOCing this building and that was my focal point to be honest. Still, that is easily changed. Really enjoying the new wave.
Oh and I like the use of the new corner arch type brick from the big castle to use here as an ornamental thing.
Ive just sold my first wave castle and caved and bought the new one. Much better build and looks fab. Obviously then had to buy the great hall and now looking to buy the clock tower.
Is it wortg buying the hogwarts express?
Is it any better than the previous one which I have anyway?
I definitly didn't mean to sound disparaging about the sets, I think they have done a great job, it's lovely to get so many different important plot points and lots of lovely charachters in there. Love the fact that it's sort of a modular build-up so every kid can hopefully get one part of the castle at least if they want too, and others (or adults) can collect the whole thing, without having the shell outa lot of money in one go.
It's simple enough to build a Hogwarts that looks broadly the right shape and design, but quite difficult to put the right rooms in the right place, especially as floor plans change throughout the films.
Main problem is the sheer size. Great Hall has been upsized and is now 48x24 studs with the courtyard added. The next building is 50x48 and I'd guess that the Clock Tower building will be a similar size by the time the courtyard is added. I could easily see a completed model being around 6ft by 4ft and that's before I put it on to a rocky base. I've made it modular so each building is stand alone, but a bit pointless if I can't have it displayed all together.
I didn't count the bricks as I was going along, but it's swallowed most of 7 x 75954 and 2 x 75953, plus a couple of large tan brick Bricklink orders so I'd guess it's somewhere in the order of 7000/8000 to get to this stage.
It's been relatively cheap to do as I've managed to buy all the sets at a big discount and sold the spare minifigs off. The seven sets of 75954 cost under £80 in total with the 6 sets of minifigs sold, for example. The Bricklink orders were the most expensive.
Anyhow, here a few photos. I've shrunk them a fair bit so as not to clog up the thread, but if you want any more just ask
