Decision time: Collecting or building?
Since getting back into Lego around a year ago, my main focus has been on buying new additions for my collection, building and displaying them, then packing them away again when I need more space.
In the last couple of months though (since I went to my first Lego event as an adult, and joined Brickish - coincidence?!?), I have wanted to build more of my own creations, and have bought some sets solely for parts purposes, in order to expand my building inventory. I'm not someone who wants to spend ages designing a model in LDD then purchasing the necessary parts, I like to spread a bunch of parts all across my living room floor then make it up as I go along, based on the ideas I have in my head - and I answer the bidding of the voices there too :-)
So far, so good. But my dilemma is now that I want to 'steal' certain parts from my collection sets for MOCing purposes (MMV, Hogwarts and Diagon Alley being some of the prime potential victims), and I have a feeling that if I go down that road, I'll never be able to find all the parts again in the future should I wish to rebuild them. So I've been considering buying a second set of each of the ones I mentioned, just so that I can have the parts to MOC with.
Am I crazy to be considering this, when I already have opened sets lurking in boxes under my bed, essentially sitting idle? I should probably add that I don't have a massive budget, so buying a second of any of these sets would be a big deal for me. I feel I know what I should do from an economic viewpoint but... something inside me rebels...
How do others reconcile both building and collecting? Anyone got any advice for me? Help!!
