We should feel privileged to know that the worst thing that's happened to us is a toy company didn't send us a satisfactory free gift for purchasing a $700 box full of plastic. It should put things in perspective.

I agree with your sentiment, but, then said company shoudln't have hyped it and been a lot clearer with what 'Exclusive' and 'throughout the year' promotions were! :)
Did LEGO really hype it that much? I think there was way more LEGO created hype over the "opening night" than the actual black card, and I imagine most attendees at the event would have gone to that, black card or not.
I don't remember there being that much hype directly from TLG, but I think we can all agree that the wording of the offer is what has caused the bad feeling. Past promos for Xmas/Star Wars 4th May etc would lead the average AFOL to believe a £650 purchase would bring some great benefits/promos. What has materialised, even including this latest poorly executed and rushed offering, is disappointing.
I know it's easy to criticise with hindsight - would be interesting to see what TLG's opinion is now of their own Black Card promo - surely they can't think it went smoothly and was a success?

Yeah, I agree. It was more customers hyping it than LEGO themselves.

I think the whole 'VIP' concept is slightly flawed in the sense that no one is a VIP - anyone can sign up to the program so it's nothing particularly special. As this was the first time TLG had introduced a 'proper VIP programme' (i.e. One where a set of people were meant to be VIPs) there was a bit of hype about that.

What it comes down to is your personal details - if you want to share them with Lego, you're a VIP, that's basically how easy it is. I'm still not raging too much about what we've got as Black VIPs, but I am definitely disappointed at the lack of anything particularly special.

    Not mine, seen on facebook.

I would have been happy to have something like this as part of the black VIP promotion.

Mailed Customer Services yesterday (their phone number is blocked on our work system), and - without being rude - told them what I thought of the programme, the fact that my Card Holder bag was split and had pieces missing, and that the other set I'd bought (Luke's Landspeeder) had a slight ding in the box.  It wasn't much more than a crease, but I'd probably have rejected it as an instore purchase.

Had a reply within 30 mins that was both apologetic and amusing, and they're sending out not only a new Card Holder set, but a new Landspeeder too.

That seems fair enough (assuming that the new pack turns up intact), and I appreciate that their operatives actually write an appropriate email, rather than just sending a stock reply.

It's restored some, if not all, of my faith in TLG.

I guess the departments we're mostly taking issue with are the marketing and packing departments - customer service has always been splendid when I've had to contact them too! And I think my scathing (but polite) rant to them about Yodel refusing to deliver my Death Star a few years ago might've contributed some small bit towards their choice to use DHL/Royal Mail all the time this year.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall in the Lego marketing / brand loyalty / Shop at Home team meetings from now onwards - "What about these cool VIP promos?" "Nah, normies will moan too much so make the VIPs moan instead". Or "What about these nice promotional items and exclusive minifigs?" "Yeah, just leave those with the Americans and their conventions - I'm sure the rest of the world won't mind"

So is this no longer live?  I don't see it on the Lego website.  I haven't looked at this website for several weeks.
  • Mr_CrossMr_Cross Member Posts: 1,672
The promotion is supposed to run until 31st Jan. The card holder doesn't appear to be searchable as an item in the shop but there should be a section in your VIP account.

I noticed this (renamed section) had (re)appeared last week.

I'm seeing the details of the promotion within that section.

I also found a link to the item page in my order history here.

Fair play to Customer Services - after a moan on the 22nd (as above), I received a parcel today.  Pristine Card Holder poly (unsplit this time), and a new Landspeeder.  The box for the Landspeeder was dinged even more than the last one (sigh), but it's not the end of the world.

This has been a entertaining thread.  So many bitches and moans about the promotion that I'm glad to see it gone.....maybe not, more bitches and moans to come. :)

It's an unfortunate situation....people spent a lot of money on this item, and the vip program with the promise of being rewarded for buying early took some of the sting out of the purchase price.  Lets face it....$800+ for a set is  a lot of money!   For Lego to fail in meeting their promise to those buyer's expectations is a bit insulting....and this time the "sting" is the slap in the face.

Non-Black VIP members moaning about how much Black VIP members moan is a constant theme of this thread too. So basically, this promotion just makes everyone moan. Hopefully there will be some interesting Star Wars-based things next year for any given VIP to tie in with the theme's 20th anniversary.

Great, so my decision to wait as the initial, promotion-starved masses surged for this item was justified!

I know this was for promotions in 2018 but seeing as TLG does what it does I wonder if they will carry over any promotions to 2019?

Surely the promotion never did show up in the bag and was only visible when paying for the order?

Mine went in the bag, not initially, but as it was proceeded through. If it doesn't end up on order/confirmation, my guess is it wont get added

With all the broken bags they probably had to replace, running out sounds right.

I was looking at pictures of the MF and a good VIP gift might have been a kit that can convert it to the Solo movie version.  It will be just some blue pieces along with parts to build the escape pod portion.  I'm sure most people prefer the nonSolo version but would be a nice gift for the early fans and supporters.

At least us Black VIP members can still rock up to the Lego Store like OGs and flash our cards at the till. Not that I will very often of course because I barely ever get to a Lego store. I’ve also had a 50:50 success rate between cashiers that know the significance of the card and those that just scan it about as apathetically as me waiting for another promotion.

Rather than a badge of honour, the Black VIP card is a neon sign, saying "Mug".

Tried to see if TLG customer service could sell any seconds of the torso print, but no luck (wanted to use them for our sigfigs). So I decided to make my own revision of the design (didn't want make a straight up copy of the design), I could upload the image to somewhere like teepublic & I'm pretty sure that they or one of the other ones I've bought from do mugs.

It is just as well that minifigures have molded clasp-style hands, otherwise this minifigure would be flipping his middle finger at Black Card VIPs.

Yes, there needs to be 40,500,000 tiles and as a tile is about 0.4 cubic cm, assuming perfect packing the box needs to be about 16 cubic metres, so thats about 2.5 m cubed.

Four tiles weigh about 1g. So the contents will weigh over 10000 kg.

At 10c a part, you're looking at $4M for the set, so probably one only for George Lucas.
    SumoLegogmonkey76
  • playwellplaywell Member Posts: 2,280
^ Yes but on the side of the box you can see a number of tiles, we know that Lego just shows 1 of each type of brick with a number under it showing how many of that brick you get in the set. So each tiles much be different in some way, I am guessing different printing with a different amount on each one. So they might be more than $100 but its hard to tell as on the front all the money is upside down, maybe its Australian dollars :)

    We might be overthinking this!

    Baby_Yoda
  • Baby_YodaBaby_Yoda Member Posts: 1,295
If it's Australian dollars, you'll need an even bigger box! Although you'd be getting a lot closer considering they're made of plastic.
    gmonkey76
  • 560Heliport560Heliport Member Posts: 3,719
I don't see any dimensions for that box, so maybe it is 2.5 m cubed. Although, looking at the proportions, it needs to be around 4m x 4m x 1m. Shipping to your house will not be cheap.

Those are $100 Lego dollars (LD).  You are assuming $100 LD = $100 USD, and there is no reason to make such an assumption.  We don't know what real the conversion rate is.  If the conversion rate is much greater then the box could be adequate.  But if the conversion rate is much smaller CCC calculations are totally wrong by several orders of magnitude.
