Marvel Bricktober 2018 minifigure pack

Brixfan02Brixfan02 Member Posts: 205
So, I've heard of some of the Bricktober 2018 minifig packs becoming available in the U.S. But i haven't heard anything on the Infinity war one. I was hoping maybe they'd release it in the states around the release of Avengers: Endgame (probably as a promotional, i.e. a $99 Lego Marvel Super Heroes purchase). I would very much like to acquire this set for less than the ridiculous prices it sells for on Bricklink and eBay, and I was wondering if anyone had any news.

I talked to Lego Customer service awhile back and they said they had no plans to bring it to the US. :(

They may not, but you can also file that under customer service has no idea what's actually going on most of the time too :)

What is the threshold for a ridiculous price?  Spending $99 to get one of these is ridiculous in my book.

All that means to me is that LEGO is not having it as part of a promo. It does not stop another retailer from possibly getting them as part of a promo, and with both Captain Marvel and Endgame coming this year Ill hold out hope as I would rather not pay 50+ USD for the set.

If we 'estimate' the minifigure pack value is $14.99, that would put the value of the gift at 15%.  That's probably reasonable for a freebie.

(Spending $50.00 to get a $7.99 freebie is pretty standard for Christmas freebies.)

I guess the point I was trying to make is that in that given month, there may not be much one would be willing to buy at full price, and therefore "overbuy" to get the promo item.  $99 is a steep threshold for most folks if there is not something readily available that they have been waiting to buy.  Even tougher still S@H is being a bit more discreet on promo items.  Just my $0.02.

I think that's precisely why they started these ridiculous promos.

(And completely over-charging for them was TRU's speciality.  I'm mildly happy I don't have to be aggravated about the Bricktober promos.)

And since they do them, I never buy anything from them unless there is a promo.

If I recall, TRU valued The Lego Batman Movie, Ninjago and the others at $19.99 and you could buy them at that price if there were sets left over. Unfortunately, employees were selling them to people from day one and there were nothing left for people that were initially going to buy $50 in Lego to get the promo. The first day that The Lego Batman Movie Bricktober set was available; I went to my "local" TRU to pick one up with a $50 Lego purchase. There were none left because employees were selling them without a $50 purchase and one guy bought most of what they had. There happened to be a Lego representative at the store and I expressed my displeasure. I told her I was going to buy $50 in Lego and now that there isn't a promo available, I wouldn't be making a purchase. She seemed disinterested in my plight and so did TRU customer service.

I have a couple of points with my long story. TRU failed for many reasons and this is just one of them. I don't care if they come back or not. I know the executives ran the company into the ground and the company treated their employees like crap, so that's probably why so many exclusives "fell of the truck" and/or employees just didn't care enough to.follow proceedure.

As far as TLG is concerned; if their reps care as little as the rep I encountered that day; then shame on TLG. That is why I don't take things lying down with Lego Customer Service anymore. If I'm not happy with a purchase, I'll call and complain. I'm very nice when I call, but I won't except damaged boxes directly from them anymore.

I'm not sure there was anything the LEGO Retail Merchandiser could do - other than maybe report that TRU to his/her regional supervisor for not following the proper protocol.

But I see your point.  Apathy in the retail sphere is one of the many reasons why businesses go under or bankrupt.

And why we have the freedom to vote with our feet and not buy product at a particular retailer.

That must be a US thing, tbh. I've never seen Bricktober packs offered for sale here. They're very particular at TRU, counting down to the penny to ensure you qualify for a promotion.

I get the feeling that given the sheer scope of the American market things are just very different down there in general. Like, we don't see instant sales on new merchandise and other hiccups that I see commonly reported here, even at equivalent retailers like Walmart. Everything is very orderly (albeit quite a bit more expensive).

To be clear; I was very nice to both the Lego Rep and TRU Customer Service. She did go and ask if they had any sets left and came back and told me they didn't have any, shrugged her shoulders and continued doing whatever she was doing. I am usually nice until someone gives me a reason to not be nice :) My best experiences at TRU was helping people find particular CMF's.

My good friend was a TRU store manager for many years was then was managing more than one store; he was set to be promoted to regional manager before TRU collapsed.  The stories he told me were crazy. He once banned our old principal from his store because he was caught buying TRU Star Wars Exclusive boxed sets and replacing the rare figures with common figures. Deplorable.

The Bricktober Promotion, at least from that particular year, was that if you bought $50 worth of Lego you received that weeks Bricktober set. My parents went to their TRU and bought a Ninjago set and received the Ninjago Bricktober set. After that week was up and the next Bricktober set was in play, if there were any left over Bricktober sets from the previous week, you could purchase them for $19.99. You could ONLY purchase the leftover sets, NOT the current Bricktober set for that week.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm just a bit sour because I've been dealing with stuff like this since 1995 when the Star Wars Power of the Force 2 line came out.

...or maybe I'm just old and cranky :)

Oh, we have those repacker a**hats here too. I've seen several Marvel Legends repacked with the incorrect build-a-fig parts and/or figures over the years. It's disheartening, to say the least. I will never understand that level of ignorant entitlement. A couple of times I've actually bought them like that, just because I wanted the figure and had zero interest in the build-a-fig. It seemed like the humane thing to do, getting what I wanted and sparing the store extra grief.

It'd be nice if the return clerks were more savvy, but I can see why they're not hyper aware of the differences between each and every character across dozens of waves every year. Outside of my own interests, I can't distinguish much of what I see on store shelves.

It was exactly the same here in Switzerland. A week (or so) before the promotion they were just on the shelves for regular purchase. I think the Batman sets were up first and come the promotion all of the promotional sets were sold out. The staff then realised this for the following weeks and kept them by the tills. After each promotional week, I think the set was on normal sale.

To be fair in this day and age all it takes is having a computer to hand so they can check against a stock image. It’s poor protocol and lack of training that’s the issue there.

It's possible the scumbag returning the item claims that they're returning it because it has the wrong parts... "I was in a hurry, I didn't notice it until later..." What can a store employee do in that situation?

In that situation they'd check the seals and if it seems genuine (I realise people reseal stuff) they'd either return it to their supplier or sell it discounted as a defective item.

Also I realise scammers always find a way but there's no reason to make it easy for them.

As a former customer service employee at toysrus, no one has that kind of time to scrutinize every return and all it takes is the customer raising a stink and the manager will cave. Every. Single. Time.

No, it's really not.  As @pharmjod said, there's not nearly enough time to do any of that checking.  You could literally train a person to recognize every possible variance to an altered product, and they still wouldn't have the time to review everything.  Try to do that at a Wal-Mart here in the states and you'd have a bona fide riot on your hands from everyone else waiting in line.  You'll just never get the sort of attention and care needed at big retail stores.  Only in smaller shops would they have the ability to do that, and that's likely not where you'd see the issue.

They can't even identify counterfeit money and they handle money all day long. No way they can ever scan returns. I've only had one item missing parts, and I just took it back and told them it was missing parts and got another package. I would hope that they sent it back rather than reshelving since I told them it was missing parts.

I've never (*knock on wood*) once had a set missing parts. I always check and double check the integrity of the seals when buying Lego anywhere but the Lego Store though.

Wait...what? Why would you not open them? I kinda/sorta get the 'buy an extra set for investment' thing... but to never open any of your sets? Mate, if I didn't really enjoy the ritual of sitting down to build a new set, I would quickly find something else to to with the money.

You are missing out on some serious bonding time with your inner child, eh?

^ And absent someone literally stealing an item out of the store, retail managers really don't have the appetite to accuse customers of theft.

I remember going into a TRU/BRU once that had several larger Star Wars sets on the shelf all marked "missing minifigures" on sale for 5% off of TRU's high price.  I just laughed and walked away.
