It's the sad fact of merchandise lines based on storylines that we rarely if ever get a piece of merchandise based on everything. Okay, sometimes it's no great loss for some stuff to be left out, but then there are those times when stuff gets left out that you really wanted to have or at least see in a physical form. I know I've seen this a couple of times with Lego, so I thought I'd share a few of my thoughts and open it up for others to share theirs.

Bionicle (there's actually quite a few I could list here, but I'll stick with some highlights)
  • Artakha-this guy was created by Greg Farshtey, the main writer for Bionicle G1, and didn't receive an actual physical appearance until the last year of the line's run. Even then it was limited to text form, but it was impressive: a ten-foot tall figure in green and gray armor with an intricately carved mask. G2 at least gave us a version of the mask, but it would have been nice to get Artakha himself.
  • Karzahni (Pre-Pit)-so this guy we actually got a set for in 2007, but it was just a bit disappointing considering how this guy was introduced. As debuted by Greg Farshtey, Karzahni was a black and gold titan with a mask that appeared to be made of pieces of four separate ones. It is nice that he at least got a set, but seeing one more faithful to his original depiction would have been nice.
  • Makuta (Generation 2)-one of the great disappointments of Bionicle's reboot line was the fact that we didn't get a set version of the series' main villain, Makuta. Now, granted, Lego did come up with some impressive alternate models, but they were a bit of a pain to get put together. Would have been nice to get an official Lego set or two.
  • Toa Hagah (minus Norik and Iruini)-So in 2005 there was this whole thing where two Special Edition sets, initially developed as Toa versions of 2004 characters Turaga Dume and Nidhiki, were turned into Toa versions of Rahaga characters Norik and Iruini. The sad thing is, the two had four teammates who never got Toa forms as sets, despite returning to Toa form in the series' online media. I'm a bit of a completionist, so it would have been nice to see them. A Toa Nidhiki actually wouldn't have been an unwelcome addition either.
Dimensions
  • Lord Vortech-easily the biggest disappointment for me with Dimensions was that we never got a minifig of him.
  • Dalek Saucer-one of the coolest vehicles/settings that appeared in Lego form in dimensions; would have been sweet if it and some other Dimensions items could have gotten sets.
The Lords of the Rings/The Hobbit
  • The Balrog-after seeing this guy in video games, the fact that we never got him in set form is just sad. He would have been a great part of a Mines of Moria set.
  • Battle of the Last Alliance-the prologue for the first film was epic, and included some characters that would have made for great minifigs. Don't lie-you know you want a Sauron fig.
  • Battle of the Pelennor Fields-this set would have been great, especially with all the characters that could have been included: the Witch-King with helmet atop his Fell Beast, Eowyn, armored Merry and Pippin, maybe even Faramir as a bit of artistic license.
  • Battle Packs-for those who like army building, it could have been fun to get some generic Elf, Dwarf, Orc, and various Man factions in battle pack form. Could probably have snuck in Bolg and some other prominent figures while they were at it, if they weren't going to put them in full-sized sets.
  • The Watcher in the Water-is there ever not a reason to have a giant water monster?
Star Wars Rebels
  • Battle Packs-there were honestly a number of character groups in Rebels who would have made for ideal battle pack fodder. These include the Protectors of Concord Dawn, Imperial Sentry Droids, Clan Wren, Rocket/Jumptroopers, Jedi Temple Guards, Infiltrator Droids, and assorted Rebel or miscellaneous groups.
  • Chimaera-okay, so Rebels would have to have been pretty popular for us to get a Star Destroyer specifically stylized to represent Grand Admiral Thrawn's personal ship. But it would certainly have been a neat addition, and could have included a number of interesting figures.
  • Lightmaker-oddly, despite the ship appearing in both Rebels and Rogue One following its introduction in the old Expanded Universe, we have yet to get a Hammerhead Corvette in Lego form. Such a set would have been a great addition, and could have included some fun minifigures like Ryder Azadi and a Rebels version of Princess Leia.
  • Lothal Jedi Temple-as a major setting for various events throughout the series, it would have been sweet to get a set version of this temple.
  • Nightbrother-this Mandalorian Gauntlet-fighter with a sick paint job stood in for Maul's lost Sith Infiltrator, and later served as a prominent Rebellion ship in the series. Would have been nice to get an update of #9525, perhaps with Maul and various other Rebels characters in their Season 3 versions, and maybe even a bigfig or brickbuilt version of the Bendu, reflecting the ship's brief appearance on Atollon.
  • Marauder-Like Chimaera, this Imperial Light Cruiser would probably have been a bit big, but a distinctive and cool vehicle that could have come with some fun characters.
  • Phoenix Nest-" " (just swap out Carrier for Cruiser)
  • Sato's Hammer-a fun ship that could have included its crew from the series, while also giving some fans of the old expanded universe the chance to pick up a ship they could MOC into a fan favorite from that continuity.
  • Shadow Caster-a sweet bounty hunter vessel that could have come with some cool characters.
  • Sith Temple on Malachor-this impressive area served as the climactic setting for season two of the series, so it was sad not to see it appear as a set. It could have included a number of minifigures, including the Seventh Sister and Eighth Brother Inquisitors and "Old Master" Darth Maul.
  • TIE Defender-#8087 could really have used the update.
  • Vanguard-fans have been dying for a Nebulon frigate for years, haven't they?
  • Various other vehicles, ships, locations, etc.-let's face it, Rebels gave Lego plenty to work with; a shame the theme didn't sell better and thus endure longer.

I'm probably entirely alone in wanting them, but I would have liked to have seen at least one more small wave of DC Superhero Girls. Granny Goodness and Barda (and any more of the Furies, really) would have been amazing! Cheetah and Katana in minidoll form would have been brilliant too, but at least we have minifigs of them from the main DC line.

Nexo Knights had some great potential villains, I really wish they would have done the forest and aquatic characters. The 2nd season killed the theme, WAY too much light bluish grey. So we ended the theme with a last wave that felt like they repurposed some discontinued Ultra Agents sets.

Definitely more Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. A Balrog, Mordor, Beorn (bear-form), a proper Rivendell, Mount Doom, Fell Beast, Gondor, Osgilliath, Sayron’s eye, etc., etc.

i still hold out just just a little bit of hope that it will come back... maybe with the Amazon TV show?

There was a film-accurate MOC of the Lego Movie 1 submarine in the Lego House when i went there in May last year - was a perfect recreation of the sub with periscopes and Wyldstyle graffiti and even had the swimming kitty at the front. Wouldn’t have minded that available for purchase.

I also wish we could’ve had more from Clone Wars or Rebels but I seem to remember multiple people associated with TLG saying they were a harder sell. I still wish they would do more from Rogue One in Star Wars because they seemed to forget about it all too soon and it doesn’t look like we’re getting anything significant from RO in the April release.

We just needed one more wave of LotR to be content: A balrog set (with or without a bridge), a Minas Tirith set, and a set with the Witch-King on fell beast and Eowyn. I think a big reason so many of us want more LotR is because it's so obvious what is missing, and they spent the last wave on the pirate ship and the Black Gate instead. While the Mouth of Sauron fig is great, no one would rather have had that over the Witch-King.

I know they're not official sets, but I have build all three, apart from the sword, and they're all really nice models and well-worth considering to fill a few gaps.

I would have enjoyed a few more sets from the Scooby-Doo Theme... Specifically some of them actually based on the locations in the two LEGO films they made and maybe one or two more based on classic cartoons, especially the Scooby-Doo Meets Batman ones because LEGO Scooby dressed in the Flying Suit would have been a brilliant idea.

    I would've loved to see…
    • more Blacktron stuff in Space Police 3 besides just Rench's uniform.
    • one or more new costumes/designs for Ava in Nexo Knights (she's such a great character and it's a bummer that she never got a redesign like all the other main characters and even some secondary characters did). Also some more civilian characters and buildings.
    • Like, at least one female character in Knights' Kingdom II? Seriously!
    • Nya's motorcycle from The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
    • One or more battle machines for Hitomi from LEGO Exo-Force, and minifigure designs of her design from the 2006 and 2008 comics.
    • A set of Makuta from Bionicle G2 (either the mask maker version, the giant evil version, or both), as well as the Mask of Ultimate Power and Mask of Time.
And most importantly, in LEGO Elves, I'd have liked to see…
    • sets/story arcs depicting the Desertlands
    • sets/story arcs with mermaids
    • mini-dolls of Emily's grandmother, Quartzine, and the other three sisters from the legend.
    • a cape and/or cloak for Farran. Why doesn't he get to dress up more?
    • Emily and Azari start dating
    • Emily and Azari kiss
But overall, I was mostly content with most of these themes for their time, aside from some of the stuff about Exo-Force and Knights' Kingdom II. For the stuff they missed? That's what MOCs are for!

Note: I'm not mentioning all the stuff from past Ninjago story arcs that I would've liked to see in sets, because a lot of them might still show up in the future.

It was always my opinion that Danju would have worked perfectly as a woman.

And, yeah, it always seemed weird that they put Ryo in Blazing Falcon in the Mobile Devastator set. He never even piloted it...

Yeah...like the actual Rogue One, for example.

@J0rgen I totally agree. @Aanchir I'd go with all the non-Elves stuff; not a fan of that theme, but everything else seemed like a cool idea. Unmade BIONICLE masks have a definite appeal-the ones you mentioned from G2 of course, but there were a few G1 items that would have been nice to get too, like Karzahni's Mask of Alternate Futures, the actual form of the Mask of Shrinking (or they could have just made Dume's mask that), and various masks for characters who only appeared in text form.

I can definitely name a few Ninjago items that seem to have missed their chance, though admittedly most of these were designed by the show staff which undoubtedly explains their lack of inclusion:
    • Garmadon's Dark Island mech
    • Various Dragons-Overlord, Elemental ones for Nya, the Time Twins, Skylor, Garmadon?, and more impressive ones for Cole and Kai...I made a whole thread
    • The Preeminent
    • Various other TV series beasties

More adventure of the hero factory heroes through the galaxy. Feel like they could've continued that a long time if they had wanted to... or maybe I'm biased because that was the theme to really hook me lol. But regardless the whole robot space cops thing could've had a lot more stories.

I'm so boring! my list is so unimaginative and unoriginal... think I've got gold moon logo on the brain!

    1. Classic Space: a ship bigger than #928... a Mothership perhaps?
    2. Classic Space: more ships/vehicles with the Trans green canopies.
    3. Classic Space: Delta IV Moon base or something with a monorail in classic livery.
    4. Space Police III: a couple more moulds for Alien heads.
    5. Alien Conquest: just more, another year worth of sets would have been nice.
Anything to expand the "generic" space and Sci-Fi range of parts really.

Did we ever have a Classic (Orbital) Space Station - I'd like one of those. If that's too awkward (it would have to sit on the floor/surface like Bespin's Cloud City) then I'd settle for a Mothership, like @Mr_Cross has suggested.

    Been a while, hasn't it?

Probably not going to happen, but wouldn't mind a set based on Aspheera's pyramid from the current season of Ninjago, especially if it came with another Clutch Powers, a couple Pyro Whippers, and a blue variant of Aspheera. Unlikely to get it, of course, since the show team presumably created it after seeing the 2019 summer sets.

There's probably a number of Ninjago TV show buildings that might make fun sets.

Loads of stuff from Elves. The story wrapped up fairly well but there's so many places it could have gone if it continued... for one, Secrets of Elvendale teased us with the existence of mermaids in Elvendale only for them to never really get a spotlight in the story or sets. An ocean-based story arc would have been amazing, especially with parts like the ones from this year's Friends sets.

They could do Moe's if they wanted to. They did a wine cellar in The Hobbit.

But if they won't do Moe, it is unlikely they would do the alcoholic stoner Otto driving the bus.

Suspension of disbelief - the Hobbit is obviously fake, and the wine in the cellar might be of a completely fictional variety, in theory. The Simpsons is based on reality, and there are real bars that sell alcohol like Moe's.

Yes. The Simpsons. Forgot about that one. Too bad it's near impossible to get custom figs for this theme although I do believe there were some non-buildable collectibles that had heads that were close to the right size to put on a minifig.

Yeah, I felt the second wave was a bit weak (outside of #41239 which is absolutely my favorite DC Lego set, ever). I could def have used a wider assortment of new characters (Lena didn't even get an alternate costume, just a flat reissue), and a bit more effort put into some of the models ( #41238 is a crushing disappointment, as it could have easily been an essential DC set. LexCorp is iconic like Arkham to the Superman mythos).

The tragic media support was certainly not Lego's fault though. I only purchased one of the films Lego produced themselves ("Brain Drain"), but I was rather impressed with it. It's not "Lego Movie" caliber material, but it's leaps and bounds above the unwatchable pap that passed for episodes of the animated webisodes. I think Lego def did thier part in trying to market the line.

In hindsight though, it's nice that we got what we did. The figures we did get are all really nice, with a few characters we'd never have seen otherwise. Sets like #41232 (which makes a perfect stand in for a Hall of Justice, eh?), #41230, and #41239 are all brilliant additions to your DC collection. :D

I wish Avatar had more than just the two sets from the first season. I know it wasn’t a successful theme, but I think two sets per season (only three seasons total) could have worked, especially since the show got more popular as time went on. I really want an Iroh minifig and am sad he was not included in the Fire Nation Ship.

Season 2 sets: Drill and Ba Sing Se, Wan Shi Tong’s Spirit library
Season 3 sets: Day of Black Sun attack, Sozin’s Comet Airships

    I think for me -

Monster Fighters, another wave with some more classic inspired monsters, could have done this instead of Scooby Doo.

Pharoah's Quest, another wave but maybe this time instead of being set in modern day have Jake Raines time travel back to Ancient Egyptian times (unlicensed Stargate!). They could have more Egyptian civilians and army.

Alien Conquest, another wave where the aliens were defeated on Earth and now it is payback time.

Atlantis, another wave focusing mainly on City of Atlantis and the fish.

It is probably not surprising that these were all one-and-done waves that could have offered more.

I realized my main want the other day after looking over my collection again.  I wish they’d focus Architecture again on some of the more famous architects, with more residential style buildings.  The city skylines are nice enough, and probably an improvement over the single micro type buildings they started with.  And yes we do get famous landmarks and large type buildings now.

But I’m thinking more sets like #21005, #21010, #21009, #21017, all of which I have & enjoy, and #21014 which I sadly don’t have.  Now I’m not necessarily sure what all buildings along those lines might make good subjects as they’re residential.

But it seems that the focus nowadays for larger more detailed sets is definitely in the creator expert range, between modulars, winter village, fairground, and vehicles, all of which display some real talent in set design.  But still.  There’s something about #21010 for example, maybe just that it’s the largest architecture set, that I’d like to see duplicated again.  It must be a niche market though, or they’d definitely be doing more sets like that.

Imagine if the LoTR license was active in 2018-19 instead of 6 or 7 years ago.  Now LEGO has a track record of big huge licensed display sets that sell well, including Hogwarts and Disney Castle, among others.  Having the LoTR license now could have given us similarly grandiose versions of Minas Tirith, Rivendell, Helms Deep, etc

The Scooby-Doo sets were soooorely under-represented. How many times were they out in a seagoing vessel partying or whatever & ended up on a "deserted" island due to bad weather?

    Cemetery anyone? & where's Scooby-Dum?

Welp, a filler episode from the second half of Ninjago season 11 reinforced my desire to see a Preeminent set, with or without the enhanced version of the P.I.X.A.L. Samurai X Mech that appeared in the same episode. Also a good number of Ice Chapter characters who were created by the show team and thus do not have physical big or minifigures...always annoying.
