LEGO Classic Space, I want to understand, and try to help those fans.

  Ive never been the biggest classic space buff as it predates me by something around twenty years - however - I do have an appreciation for it, as I have a number of them in my posession that were hand-me-downs. 
  
  Personally speaking, I think a sort of modernized take on Classic Space would be a blast. Curves, Smoother exteriors, etc. I think would be welcome changes, but having the designs be relatively simple (ie. not akin to Space Police 3) and of course sticking to the simple light grey + single color designs would be ideal.
  
  just my thoughts though! Maybe older - er - wiser Bricksetters who love CS more have different opinions though!

  Somewhat basic,, but yet elegant, designs and open to imagination IMO. Loved the few sets I had as a kid (never really had a large Classic space set either growing up) and loved having almost a complete collection of classic space once I became old enough, and got an eBay account, to start buying old LEGO lots that had many of these sets. IMO Blacktron I was the chief classic space type of set, but I really love everything from the start of Classic Space through to the later space themes

  If you want to build it to be successful on Ideas, I wouldn't bother. There are already highly experienced Classic Space builders that have submitted space ships to Ideas. Do you think your idea is going to rival theirs? The one above, Peter Reid, for example has a huge following and a successful Idea (Exosuit) behind him. Can you rival that? Similarly the Up house has been done so many times on Ideas, it doesn't get anywhere. Rather than jumping in and building something you know not much about trying to rival people with loads of experience and an existing following, why not try something that has not been done before? Those are the types of (non-licensed) projects that have been successful recently - the tree house, ship in a bottle, pop-up book, etc.

  If you chose Classic Space as a theme solely because you think it will sell, you are probably choosing the wrong theme. You need to figure out something to build that truly inspires YOU, and also happens to be something other people might want.

  The NCS site is a great resource, but "the rules" are pretty arbitrary and probably the least useful thing on that site. Here's a rebuttal by another NCS designer (who has a beautiful MOC by the way) http://www.harrisbricks.com.au/2018/neo-classic-space-rules/

  Puh-lease. "Rules"? Build what you like! I think you'll have better results if you build something you really like, rather than trying to please someone else.

  Yes that’s why I said ‘the rules’ as it was more about the general idea if Neo Classic Space thanthe actual rules themselves 😁

  When I meant rules, I meant the Classic Space aesthetic, actually. I just wanted to build something that looked like it belonged in CS. But, since others have told me I should do what makes me most excited, I'll improve my Up house for me, then work on something I've always wanted to build: a giant tracked space truck thing.

  @Baby_Yoda Something more like: But not quite this, even. Picture like the front of a big rig tractor, with tracks on the back 4 wheel spots. But with a base over the hitch area...with rockets for off planet travel.

  ^I'd be more likely to be interested in something like that than in the "Up" house, particularly if it was designed for adding power functions.

  It would all depend on what the motor functions end up doing. If you make it non-powered, take a look at the options LEGO has for add-on power in existing sets, like  #10194. If LEGO already sells the parts required for motorizing as a separate set it will help. As far as I know the only way to get the BOOST electronics is the $150 BOOST set, and that's a bit steep for somebody who just wants to add parts to another set.
