Officially Hit a New Milestone

I've officially hit a new milestone. I bought a set on clearance tonight and didn't remember that I already had it until I got home and went to enter it into My Sets on Brickset and it was marked as owned. A quick look on my shelf of unopened sets and there it was...Not sure if I should be proud of this moment or not...

I’d say be proud!  I haven’t run into this yet.  LOL gotta love brickset for being able to enter in your collection!

Smartphones and Brickset are how I handle this. I record what I paid in the notes so I can compare against store prices in case I want duplicates.

Happened to me several times.....even on sets greater than $200.

I also use my phone and BS for this and it helps a lot. Although I supposedly own a BTTF DeLorien set that I have no idea where it is

    I'm sure I have 3 BB8 polys, but I can't find them.  (Which means I don't have them!)

This is exactly why I use myBrickset on my Android phone :-) Only one accidental dupe and that was sitting at home at my desk ordering from S@H, where I apparently forgot to mark as owned on Brickset.

One does need to be diligent about adding and removing items from your collection. I’m pretty good about updating Brickset as soon as they enter my house or car, but I still sometimes forget.

This exact same thing happened to me twice. Now l ALWAYS check the brickset app

There have been a few occasions that I either traded or sold sets or minifigures that I didn't have. Buying a set on discount that I already have would be a pleasant surprise.

    Hasn't happened to me yet,

    I'm really disappointed with myself.

    Promise to try harder!

I spend so long planning possible purchases (due to financial constraints) before finally getting them that it's almost impossible for me to hit this milestone haha

Hit it last year. In Leicester Square store treating myself to the WV station, Mrs Speedman spies the London bus, Lester minifigure and London guard mini build and says they'd be perfect for her London based friend who likes quirky Christmas presents. Piled the whole lot on top at the tills and paid. Got home and went to stash them in my unbuilt set/present pile to find all three already there, two of them in duplicate already!

While sorting through my collection of ‘to be built’ which was scattered all over, I noticed I have somehow acquired two #75172 Y Wings. God knows how. I don’t even remember buying the second one, let alone the first!

^^ If my present and unbuilt set piles were the same pile I'd be building like there was no tomorrow....

Doesn't everyone have ab unbuilt/to build pile, as well as a never build/open pile?

I only have an unbuilt pile. Due to shortage of space there are a lot of big and smaller sets unbuilt and unopened. When I move out to a bigger place, I know what to do I guess.

I honestly hope I never get to the point where I have a "never build/open" pile.

That pile is my duplicates (of which the other is built/to be built), or only one ofs. The reason, is that I dint have the space to display all I want, and, as with the deLorean I never got to build in time and only have one of, I know it's silly, but its value now, compared to what I paid, seems silly to. Same as my Indy sets, although they are not in a pile, but at my mums and I never got round to building

I always thought I’d NEVER have enough to have a never build/open pile, however.... After an order of small sale / retiring soon sets, I now have an unbuilt pile.  As small as it is, and as short a time as it might take to go through it, I still have an unbuilt pile.  So I guess never say never lol.
  • Jern92Jern92 Member Posts: 893
My never build pile consists of sets for Secret Santa, but usually there'll just be one or two in there each year.
  • Speedman29Speedman29 Member Posts: 2,337
My unbuilt/present pile is the same, sets for SS or my daughters friends birthdays.

I have a pile that is don't open / build for the forseeable future. I think every set in it are duplicates anyway, aside from a few creator sets or some polybags that are from themes of no interest to me. In the future I can enjoy opening them as if for the first time, or sell them if they increase enough to offset the purchase of something I want more at the time. Or maybe the kids will have them if they are into that subject later on.
  • Speedman29Speedman29 Member Posts: 2,337
If we're talking polybags, theres a whole other unbuilt/present/duplicate pile for them!
  • 560Heliport560Heliport Member Posts: 4,262
I've never (unknowingly) bought a set I already had, and I don't normally have an "unbuilt" pile, except for maybe if I buy several sets together, but right now I have #70653, #70652, #75228, #75251, #70665, #10254, #60240 all waiting- plus a bunch of recent polybags! The problem is lack of space; I need to dismantle some stuff to make room. But that's not fun at all.

Oh, I definitely have an unbuilt pile (like @560Heliport though just due to time/space limitations) but I don't have a never build/open pile. I suppose gifts could count there, but for my personal collection I mean. I'm not an investor/seller, so to me having sets that I never plan on opening or building just seems like pointless extravagance. I buy the sets that I want to build and display or sets that I'm buying specifically to part out. I never buy something that I just plan on squirreling away.

I have the same problem. I need to work out what to dismantle...

You can have mine, as long as I get to keep whatever's in it.
