Hey Lego collectors, Today I am counting down the top 5 Lego themes that need to make a comeback!!

NOTE: This is only my own opinion!! Please be respectful if you disagree, Thanks! 

5)Pharaoh's quest

This theme may not have lasted long, But the few sets released were really good. To The iconic Spinx to a great pyramid build, it would be great to see this theme come back 

4)Monster Fighters

I think that many fans have a lot of nostalgia when it comes to the Monster fighters Line. What a shame that we only got one wave!!

3) Legends of Chima

This one is kind of personal and may not apply to everybody, But chima was one of my favorite themes of all time, and it would be great to see new tribes if the show and sets would come back.

2)Indiana Jones

another theme full of nostalgia, Like star wars this is one of the most iconic movie franchises out there, and With the 5th film coming out soon it would be a great opportunity to bring back the theme, with both new and old sets!!

1) Last but not least LORD OF THE RINGS

LOTR is one of the best lego themes out there with some of the most outstanding builds and minifigures. this is really what lego is missing The classic Knight feel that LOTR has is something very important to LEGO

    In my opinion the only theme that should come back is the theme LEGO AGENTS released in 2008 and discontinued in 2009. As the last wave of sets released from this theme was released in 2009 and called AGENTS 2.0 if LEGO came back with this theme should probably be called AGENTS 3.0

    I’m surprised they haven’t done Monster Fighters again.  I can see there being licencing issues with some discontinued themes, but MF was a completely original IP they could redo any time they want.  Not to mention there seems to be enough demand based on secondary market values that another wave could do very well.

    I’m pretty happy with what Lego has done recently, but I wouldn’t mind seeing these again...

    5. Adventurers - need an excuse for more exotic animals
    4. Pirates - want another imperial flagship, red coats or blue coats 
    3. Castle
    2. Western - something about the Wild West and steam engines draws me
    1. Space - classic or Mission to Mars

    What would you have them do for LOTR? They 're missing Gondor and maybe Bree or the Prancing Pony. But much else would be duplicating what has already been done. Same with Monster Fighters, I'm glad it was one wave with decent sets rather than diluted.

    A revival of a non-licensed castle theme with fairytale/fantasy elements and creatures/factions: elves, trolls, dwarfs, wizards, giants, dragons etc. etc. next to human knights and people living in a typical historical medieval European like world with castles, walled towns, windmills, houses with waterwheels next to a creek/river, and even magical flying ships and what have you could potentially be totally awesome.

    What was nice about the LOTR / Hobbit sets were all the building techniques that were far more intricate then most other castle sets, as well as of course all the minifigs. If TLG combines the best of those sets with the best castle lines: the Kingdoms subtheme (2010-2012) and the Fantasy Era subtheme (2007-2009), and adds a splurdge of classic castle with Black Falcon knights, and a dash of forestmen to it TLG could create a theme enjoyed by many Lego fans young and old.
    If they add some named protagonist and villans as well as some ambivalent characters, create a cartoon series with an interesting storyline and characters with some depth to their personalities (perhaps taking some inspiration from SW The Clone Wars and Ninjago etc. on what works, and what does not) who knows how popular and succesful such a theme might become.

    Y’all seem to be forgetting Ultra Agents came out and flopped just three years ago. 

    Monster Fighters definitely deserves a return though, particularly if they went a bit more gothic.

    I agree with your list accept for space, just never been a big fan of that line.

    For castle i would love to see some more from the fantasy era.

    With western i was a huge fan of the lone ranger line, I would love some more sets from that.

    LOTR and Indiana Jones would be welcome also. I wouldn't be upset if they did another wave of monster fighters. The haunted mansion is one of my all time favorites.

    I was in my dark ages when Adventurers was released. This looked to be a very interesting range - was it popular at the time (1998 - 2003)? Presumably, as it lasted 5 years, it was successful...

    There is certainly a gap in Lego’s historically themed sets. At school, children are always learning history topics and it’s a shame lego don’t produce more/any such sets these days. The Roman and Egyptian themes by Playmobil are lovely and my youngest son loves them. I wish lego produced these! I wonder if there are any AFOP!

    I know there are CMFs of historical times so it’s frustrating these aren’t developed further currently.

    But Lego knows what it’s doing, so presumably there isn’t a market these days for history sets (apart from my kids).

    I can thoroughly recommend the DK book (the one with the 2018 red brick) as it has info on all of Lego’s themes.There are so many ‘old’ sets I need to buy!

    I bought every Monster Fighter set i could find this past October and it's turned into a top five line for me. The haunted mansion being a particular favorite. It seems like such a no brainer for Lego to issue a new MF Halloween set every year * as they do in November/December with the WV sets. I'd love to build a haunted village and it would be a cost effective way for MF to live on and not overwhelm the market with watered down product.

    I've recently bought a couple Alien Conquest sets which i like a lot too. I'd vote for a resurrection of that line any day along with Scooby-Doo..

    * Something more substantial than the small sets currently offered...

    Halloween isn't that big a deal outside of North America. Also it would make them seasonal, which means stores ending to use discounts to get rid of them come November.

    For me it would be:
    1. Castle
    2. Pirate
    3. Adventure
    4. Viking
    5. ?

    I go back and forth on whether Castle or Pirate is my favorite.  Today it's Castle, so that's my number 1.  We had a pretty amazing run of Castle sets from 2007-2013.  But nothing in 5 years other than LOTR/Hobbit.  This now the biggest drought of Castle sets since the theme began.

    Pirate has had sets released more recently than Castle so I'm not missing this as much.  The original line is still one of my favorites.  Although I do like the Imperial Guard (redcoats) to the Imperial Soldiers (bluecoats).  Maybe the Imperial Armada needs a reboot.

    The Adventure is a little hit or miss in my book.  I love the desert and orient sets.  I don't like the jungle sets as much and loath dino island.  I don't think Lego would ever do it, but a European city theme (like Paris) could be cool.  Catacombs, a library, an estate house and ruins of some type would be fun sets in my mind. 

    Viking was a great theme I'd like to see revisited.  My biggest complaint about Vikings was I hated the KK2 swords.  In fact I replaced them all with standards swords.  Not sure if the History Channel TV show makes this difficult or not.

    For number 5 I don't really have anything.  Maybe a post-Classic Space sub-theme like Blacktron or M-Tron.  Classic Space isn't a big draw for me.  But I might get a in a new Blacktron series if it's well done.  And I always liked M-Tron.

    Time cruisers. Hear me out. I'm not talking about the bumbling hodge podge Lego did in the late 90s, but a reimagination of the theme with a story line. Maybe call it Time Treasures.

    Character going back thru time visiting historical places or key moments. Great educational opportunities!

    I'd be all over this. I wouldn't mind seeing a throwback to the yellow castle. Maybe something all of the factions are fighting to find. They could even turn it into an ongoing cartoon series.

    Disagree with you there. I think the UK is getting more into Halloween each year now and wont be long until it is a bigger deal as it is there. It may not peak like some US places do with decorations etc, but it's growing

    Disagree with you there. I think the UK is getting more into Halloween each year now and wont be long until it is a bigger deal as it is there. It may not peak like some US places do with decorations etc, but it's growing
    Would you display Halloween decorations for weeks to a month though, like Winter Village sets at Christmas time?

    but to play along.

    Indiana Jones - with a fifth film in the offing I think there is a very real chance we will see more. There are a lot of scenes and character missing, maybe even worth doing a what’s missing segment :)
    pirates - always welcome and again I think quite likely we will see something at some point in the future

    I feel like many of the theme categories that have proven their ability to come back time and time again — castle, pirates, space, secret agents, underground, underwater, etc. — are likely to continue to do so in the future if the demand exists. With this feeling of short-term or long-term inevitability, I don't feel much sense of urgency for most of them. They'll happen when they happen.
    Outside of these more broadly defined categories, some of the themes I'd personally most enjoy seeing revived or rebooted are:
    1. Elves
    2. Bionicle
    3. Exo-Force (preferably with mini-dolls)
    4. Spyrius
    5. Knights' Kingdom II

    What if they did a Castle/Monster Hunters hybrid? Something like fantasy era castle but adding a number of monster types and factions? That could be a lot of fun.

    In terms of the parts included, The Vampyre Castle, The Zombies, The Werewolf, The Crazy Scientist were very castle like anyway, just with vehicles.

    Pirate ships have been a little scarcer, but Pirates has never had quite as consistent a presence as Castle, and there has at least one really amazing old-fashioned sailing ship in the past few years: #70618.
    In general, Castle and Pirates are some of the sorts of like the kind of themes LEGO has proven they're going to keep circling back to, if not always in the forms that AFOLs prefer.
    But at the same time, back in the early to mid 90s when Town, Castle, Pirates, Space, and (briefly) Aquazone were the LEGO Group's staple themes, there weren't as many other themes competing for kids' attention. Lately, Ninjago and Elves in particular have had lots of dragon and castle/temple sets that cater to the same sense of myth, magic, history, and adventure that in my childhood was almost exclusively served by Castle themes like Dragon Masters, Fright Knights, Ninja, and Knights' Kingdom. And even when we look back to Fantasy Era and Kingdoms, they weren't able to support nearly as many sets on a yearly basis as Ninjago does. So I think it's understandable that capital-C Castle sets don't get the sort of priority they did back then.

    I think @prevere meant a castle with knights and such. Not decorative buildings in a castle style.

    I just think that between the theme’s anime-style character designs and mech pilots not needing a whole lot of articulation, mini-dolls could be a much better fit for a theme like Exo-Force than the theme’s original minifigures were.
    Not to mention, Hitomi (Sensei Keiken’s granddaughter) was by far my favorite character in the original story. So if they made the next mecha theme like that a little less strictly boy-targeted I wouldn’t mind that one bit. I recognize chances are pretty slim at the time being, since the mecha genre is far from a well established cash cow in the girls’ toy market, but on the other hand, The LEGO Movie 2 is starting to push boundaries in some interesting ways.

    I think @prevere meant a castle with knights and such. Not decorative buildings in a castle style.
    I mean, a castle is a castle, and the Nexo Knights and Minecraft examples I shared DID have knights.

    If anything it tends to be AFOLs who are hung up on the idea that a castle is not a “real” LEGO castle unless it meets certain Castle theme design standards, namely being primarily grey/black, sticking strictly to bog standard medieval fantasy tropes, and using traditional minifigures.

    But are kids who don’t care about the heritage of the theme really likely to care so much whether their castle fits with a decades-old collection of previous Castle sets and factions — particularly when their interest in fantasy adventures probably extends to other interests like movies, toys, books, and video games that aren’t LEGO-related to begin with? Like, if a kid likes Minecraft AND castles, it stands to reason they wouldn’t be biased against a LEGO castle because it happens to be a Minecraft set.

    Having grown up in the 90s and 2000s I’m very aware of how many AFOLs at that time outright hated stuff like Aquazone, Exploriens, Time Cruisers, Fright Knights, Life on Mars, Bionicle, Knights’ Kingdom II, or Vikings that didn’t live up to or fit in with their more or less arbitrary standards of what LEGO themes SHOULD be like, and it certainly didn’t diminish my enjoyment of those sets or themes… even the ones with genuine design weaknesses that wouldn’t become apparent to me until I looked back on them as an adult.

    Now, I’m well aware that kids can be just as arbitrary in their sense of how things should or shouldn’t be as adults… I’m remembering a particular LEGO Message Boards topic from a few years ago that lambasted the LEGO Elves theme because “real” dragons are a fearsome force of nature that people can’t hope to ride or befriend, among other oddly specific facts about “real” dragons that must have been picked up from some particular book, movie, or series.

    But I think a lot of AFOLs are often too quick to assume that kids’ toy related tastes and prejudices mirror their own. I mean, it’s downright normal for each generation of kids to go crazy for music or toys or movies or games or tv series their parents and elders just don’t get.

    pirates with several different factions could be interesting, especially if each one eventually get its own big ship with its own unique flavor.

    The castle debate is quite an interesting one. @Aanchir is absolutely right that LEGO do frequently put out castle based sets, just they don’t tend to be grey square buildings, which I think is what most AFOLs are asking for when they say castles.

    Personally Elves was the fantasy Castle type theme I really wanted, just it used minidolls where I’d have preferred minifigures but that wasn't at all a deal breaker for me.

    Stuff like Cinderella based castles could probably better be described as palaces, which would explain the typical castle fans don't even look at them. As for Nexo Knights, while I can see where it has castle roots the style of the builds is far more Sci Fi so it's hard to really see it as castles with the exception of some of the villain based sets. Similarly with Minecraft, a lot of it is so stylized that it's hard to not see it simply as Minecraft sets, regardless as to if they are Minecraft castles they'll still look more Minecraft than castle. 

    Harry Potter is an interesting one, because the setting is essentially a castle, it's only the minifigures and some parts of the sets that separate it as such, so it would be very easy to just build the castle elements, sell the minifigures and redress the castle as a more historical than fantasy setting. That said I know for a lot of people the effort of customising sets is too much and they just want official sets, which is fair enough, but as AFOLs we have to accept that what we want isn't going to be the same as what kids want.

    Yeah, the Disney Castles are Disney sets that are castles, the Angry Birds Castle is Angry Birds set with a castle, the HP castle bits are HP sets with a bit of a castle-like structure. People aren't going to buy those for kids if they want to buy them a castle, as the theme is dominant over the castle part.

    The Elves sets are closer since they don't havce a dominant license, but if buying for a boy the buyer might step back as Elves are predominantly female characters. #41180 is a nice set, but I'd never buy it for a boy as it is all female - 1 witch and 2 female elves. If it had 1 witch and 1 male and 1 female elf, then it is a different proposition (and that is a similar ratio but reversed to what appear in City sets). I wonder what the sales would have been like if there were slightly more males in the range, it may have helped normalise minidolls into (some) boys' play too. Maybe TLM2 will help there.

    The NK sets, I reckon many older adults would see them closer to spaceships than to a castle, and the most castle like structure is Jestro's volcano. This one is not so dissimilar from some of the troll sets of the past.

    I'd buy an Elves set for a boy in a heartbeat as long as I was certain they didn't mind Elves in general. I'm sure an established Lego fan would already have plenty of traditional minifigures of both genders.

    I think for our family, the big want would be some of the fun unique unlicensed side theme sets, that they really do not seem to make.
    Power Miners, Atlantis, Alien Conquest, etc.... these were all huge themes for my son, and as they faded away and TLG moved to more licensed sets, he has always had a harder time finding sets he likes.

    My top wants.
    1) Elves (This was one of the best lines, with color, detail and uniqueness) 
    2) I would have loved the Disney Castle to not be a one and done, but to be part of a larger theme of adult Disney sets.

    You we re saying Halloween wasn't big outside US, I was saying its getting bigger, wasn't talking about year round, but, as you ask:

    I only display winter lego for a short time, seasonally, and Ive had my small Halloween sets still out on shelves since release and also left Monster Hunters out pre and post Halloween for a decent amount of time. I may see where you're coming from RE 1 day Vs 1 month or so, but, all I'm saying is Halloween is a bigger deal than maybe you think :)

    Doesn't McFarlane have TWD license? I don't know how well that theme did for them, but I wouldn't mind having Lego produce some sets.

    Lego combined Space and Castle with Nexo Knights. What about Space Pirates? Along the lines of the Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy. They could have some interesting ship designs.

    The NK sets, I reckon many older adults would see them closer to spaceships than to a castle, and the most castle like structure is Jestro's volcano. This one is not so dissimilar from some of the troll sets of the past.

    You seem to be operating under the assumption that a parent is specifically seeking out a generic, unbranded castle for a kid who likes generic, unbranded castles and ONLY generic, unbranded castles. But how many kids do you really imagine there are who like castles and yet categorically dislike Disney, Angry Birds, Harry Potter, Minecraft, Elves, and Nexo Knights? And do you really think parents are going to reject those themes as gifts for their children because they happen to overlap with multiple interests their child has?

    And then there's that whole thing about Elves alienating boys due to having primarily girl characters. FIrst of all, these days I'm not so sure that a boy couldn't enjoy a toy or series at all because it happens to include primarily girl characters. I mean, it's 2019.

    Furthermore, Elves has far more male characters than you seem to be giving it credit for. Not only are six of its 25 human/elf figures (24%) male, but so are 20 out of 50 of its unique dragon/creature figures (40%) and all nine of its goblin figures (100%). All in all, the theme's 84 unique character figures include 35 male figures (41.67%) and 49 female figures (58.33%).

    Most traditional Castle themes don't come anywhere close to gender ratios that balanced — and yet not only do AFOLs hardly ever seem concerned about the possibility of those themes alienating girls, but any time they include so much as one female knight, warrior, or soldier, we start seeing AFOL nimrods whine about "political correctness" and "historical inaccuracy" and "brainwashing" and "cultural Marxism", just as they do pretty much any time a City set has a female firefighter, mechanic, race car driver, or construction worker.

    So are y'all really concerned about the past five years having any big, cool castle sets? Or just the fact that the past six years' big, cool castle sets are no longer as overwhelmingly geared towards boys as they were for the 35 years before that?

    Btw. When I earlier mentioned that I like to see a castle theme return, I really mean Castle theme, as in: fortresses with armoured knights and soldiers armed to the teeth ready to take each other on either in seige war, or more peaceful jousting tournaments and that sort of thing. Why because that is what I thought was cool when I was a little kid, and I know plenty of (mainly) boys still think is cool, and I today as a grown man still think is cool.
    This is Lego Castle theme:
    The Elves theme is not Castle. Period! It is a girly fantasy theme, and that is cool too, but it is a whole different ballpark/game.
